"PSP killer" unveiled

iRiver wiBro

Our sister site, Engadget, has the scoop on the wonderous new "PSP killer" from our good friends at iRiver (you know, the folks that produce all of those iPod killers).

We'll eat our own blog if the WiBro ever comes close to 25% of the market share that the PSP currently has, but we'll give them some kudos for the effort (however wasted it may be). Let's look at the good:
  • 800 x 480 26k color display (not too shabby)
  • 4 or 8 GB of internal storage (we'll give 'em this one)
  • semi-cool retractable gamepad design
And now the bad:
  • completely unplayable controls (from the looks of it anyway. That's one heck of a take on a D-pad)
  • and pretty much everything else
We've got to hand it to Sony (and even Nintendo) though -- for all of the limitations of their respective devices, they get it mostly right, while most of the competitors (N-Gage, Gizmondo and the like) get it mostly wrong.

We'll hold off on our final judgement until we hold this thing in our own hands, but we'll be sleeping pretty easy tonight, confident that the PSP will survive the WiBro.
