Will Rez sound off on the PSP?

We know that rumor mongering is a bad thing, but you can't blame us for hoping that Rez, the psychedelic shooter from Lumines designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, might make an appearance on the PSP.

Shacknews reports that one of their sources at SEGA divulged that Rez is being planned for the PSP, although that's about all they cared to mention as far as gathered info, which admittedly is a bit light. We'd be lying if we said that our bullhokey alarms didn't go off at this bit of news, but we'd like to think that there's at least a discussion taking place somewhere about releasing the classic on our little handheld. It stands to reason that Mizuguchi might be thinking about porting Rez over based on his popularity after the success of Lumines, and the tons of money he could stand to make from a game that's been out for over five years, but that's just wishful thinking on our part.

The game is nearly impossible to get ahold of these days since they no longer produce the title and copies on eBay are selling for more money than I'd care to spend, so it would only be to Sony's and SEGA's benefit that it make an appearance on the PSP. We're really crossing our fingers that this doesn't end up being just another vector graphic pie in the sky.

[UDPATE:] It seems we missed Joystiq's story about a company called Game Quest Direct which sells officially-sanctioned reprints of classic games. Rez seems to be alive, kicking, and retailing for $50 on their site, which we guess isn't a bad price considering that the original probably costs twice that. Thanks for the reminder, juv3nal!
