The results are in! PS3 fans vote hardware

It's been almost two weeks since we first polled our readers on what exactly makes them all warm and fuzzy inside for the PlayStation 3. When surveyed with the question "What will excite you the most about the PlayStation 3," gamers were quick to vote and say a piece of their mind.
It's no surprise that the heavyweight hardware ranked up the most with about a thousand votes in all. The two runner-ups were pretty close, those being the games and free online multiplayer to enjoy them on. But it was pretty surprising to see the Blu-ray option take fourth place. Does this mean the "cheap Blu-ray solution" will be just another fancy add-on for gamers (who just want to get their hands on the games)? Of course as a medium it provides a subtle, yet important impact in itself.
Some people left great comments to fill in for "other" options, so don't forget to check it out and see for yourself. We're always open to ideas or suggestions, so if you have a hankering to poll the fans on something, let us know! Send us an idea for a great survey and we might just run it here on PS3 Fanboy.
Thanks to everyone who participated!

This is just sad.. Hardware and graphics mean nothing unless there are good titles with good gameplay that back them up. Good games are the backbone of success for any console. It's why the PS2 sold so many consoles and dominated the market despite being the weakest of all three of present-gen consoles.
I believe that the PS3 will still make an offering with the same types of high-quality titles that we loved on the PS2, but just seeing that this fanbase is concerned more with the graphical power rather than the content of a game or console is just disappointing. Oh where have all the good gamers gone?
CrAzY American12 @ Apr 10th 2006 8:20PM
Yeah, but good graphics really helps a game.

You are the smartest PS3 fanboy here, yet it brothers me. I want to know if your belief is true why are not a revfanboy or even interested in the revolution because the revolution is where you will truly see some good ,original and fun games.

All of the "good" gamers have switched to Xbox.
Playstation?...more like.....GAYstation!!!

You seem like an annoying guy.
I think the online will be an interesting alternative to the 12 year olds on live who seemingly love to allude to the other players sexuality. Of courses it might just be just as bad and poorly done. Although when I played playstation it was mostly for single player titles except for resident evil our break that was a fun online one.

I have yet to see what the Revolution is capable of. The titles under Sony's disposal are already proven and most likely will continue to be. Katamari Damacy anyone? Guitar Hero?
Not to say that I'm not waiting excitedly for the Revolution, but I would probably hold off to see how it takes first. Just because it has the option of the 3-D controller, doesn't mean that all the titles will support it very well or make the best use of it.

And KOTOR, KOTOR2, Ninja Gaiden, Riddick, Jade Empire, Armed and Dangerous, Half Life 2, and Fable.
You Sony Fanboys are pathetic. Your all pining for the next Rachet and Clank or Jak game but don't respect more mature games on the more mature system. Hold your breath for 10 minutes and get back to me.
Bishop @ Apr 11th 2006 8:23AM
It's all about the Hardware ... and storage and online play. The main thing is being able to handle the high performance graphics on the disks. Couple that with a larger storage area (i.e. more place to retrieve the graphics information). Then add a nice online environment and you have a winner.
It's about a 98% guarantee that you can put a better looking/reactionary/playing experience game on a 50GB disk vs. a 9GB disk. Whether its called Bluray or FVD, or SDVD, or HDDVD, more space is always better. A cell processor natively can handle more than a 3 core processor. XDRAM is faster than DDR3RAM.
The XBOX outperformed the PS2 thats why I bought it. The PS3 will outperform the XBOX 360 and thats why I will buy it.

i can write paragraphs of just the names of the high quality games the PS2 had. and please. more mature system? since when did systems get mature? its the GAMERS who should be looked at, not the system.
anyways back to topic.
I chose the games, because the PS3 will have the games i want to play. its just that simple.

"This is just sad.. Hardware and graphics mean nothing unless there are good titles with good gameplay that back them up. Good games are the backbone of success for any console."
Jepp this is true. But good hardware lais the fundation for good games. With more power you can make bigger games, with more power you can make smarter games, with more power you can make more interactive games.
You are ignorant if you belive that the power of a console has nothing to do with gameplay. The cell processor is much more powerfull than the competition and its also more scalable. This means developers have the tools they need to make better AI(smarter enemies or friends or neutrals), more interactive enviroments(as in destructable enviroments like houses, bridges, walls, veichles and so on), better ragdolls and anything really.
I think you are confusing the power of the GPU wich is used to make more shiny enviroments and the power of the CPU wich is used to make calculations for everything that you dont see directly.
I love the Revo approach to the controls. And i hope Sony copies the controller if its good. Im getting a Revo just for the controller. The PS3 will have mouse and keyboard and this is a great selling point for me just like the revmote for the Rev.
The 360 has nothing, it is not the most powerful console, it does not have the best games, it has limitations on the controlers(just the gamepad). All of these reasons sum up to make the 360 a waste of money because there are better alternatives in every category the 360 wants to compete in.
bigger fan @ Apr 11th 2006 10:22AM
Fan, some of these things may be true, or they may not.
There is one fact that you can not deny when it comes to consoles: I am playing my Xbox360 right now. I will be playing my Xbox360 next month, and for the next 7 months. I will be playing great games like oblivion, ghostrecon, battlefield2 and numerous others. All of these games look and play as well as they do on a PC that costs 2-4 times as much.
I would like to talk more about this, but I have to go play some more games. Have fun talking about your PS3.
Fan @ Apr 11th 2006 10:33AM
All of the things I said are true. But yes you are right bigger fan. The only advantage that the 360 has is that its out. I am happy to wait though.

"I would like to talk more about this, but I have to go play some more games. Have fun talking about your PS3."
That's what all Xbugs say when they are uncovered. In reality, what the hell are they doing on a PS3 fan site when the 360 is out already? Oh yeah, it burned. Too bad :( But try some Johnson's shampoo 360 fanboys, maybe then tears won't come out anymore.
Anyway, "The good games have switched to Xbox 360". Yeah, that's why Xbox 360 is ravaging Japan... oh wait. Furthermore, GRAW and Oblivion is the same crap you got last generation, except with better graphics... so no, "the good games" haven't switched.
It's sad that the poll won on the "hardware" side, since even when hardware makes the games, the games also make the hardware. I will give all these voters the benefit of the doubt, and assume they were thinking the good games are a given.
At least our console won't be flooded with First Person games, a few car games, and nothing else.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Apr 11th 2006 10:40AM
@ #12
I'm not saying that it isn't good hardware isn't good, but the games need to take advantage of the hardware to actually be something worthwhile. Also, I bet most people checked that box just because it said the word graphics in it. With games as mainstream as they are, the appearance of it means more and more.
Why do you think that Mac OSX and Vista sport spiffy graphically re-designed UI when their older versions would've worked just fine. It's because you need to attract people in by how it looks. The mainstream audience, a huge percentage of gamers, care so much about graphics.
I do agree with you about the Cell, it is one of the things that have me excited as well. Routing different processes through individual 'cells'. But once again, I re-state, the developers and the titles are gonna have to actually incorporate these advantages to create good games to thrive in this market. You can have the greatest hardware in the world, but if you don't make anything out of it, it's no good.
Prize Fighter Inferno @ Apr 11th 2006 11:49AM
Armored Core, Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, Grad Theft Auto, Man Hunt, Silent Hill 1,2,and 3, MegaMan Legends (1 and 2). True some of these have been ported over to Xbox now, but these were some of the games I enjoyed on my Playstation. Never really did enjoy games like jak and daxter. Anyways I own an Xbox and enjoy it too, but nothing really makes the Xbox 360 a have to have system yet. (Oblivion is close but I think I would rather get a new Computer.)
makatak @ Apr 11th 2006 11:57AM
the reason most of the people put graphics is because that is where the previous/current gen system fell short. We all know, xbots included that the system is going to have great games, and not just fps and racing, but overall great games. Everything else is icing on the cake.. blu-ray, free online, the cell, the controller. We want not only good graphics, but the best for all next gen systems. Get with the program

Bishop, So you bring up the storage aspect in comparing the XBox 360 and the PS3. And I agree with you that a 50 gig of storage in comparison to 9 gig should make for a much better game. But its about a 98% guarantee that a game that holds four times as much content is going to cost game companies an whole lot more to produce, and if it costs them a whole lot more to produce who do you think they are going to pass that cost on to? Do you think they are just going to eat those costs, they are going to pass them on to us as gamers. I love playing video games, but I am not sure I can get the OK to buy to many $200 to $240 video games.
PS hater @ Apr 11th 2006 4:34PM
all of you are idiots everything you say either makes no sense or is just about how power will make good games.
Yes you are correct that power makes good games but without the ability to control the power the games will turn out crappy or with to much power comes system problems which means you will probably not be able to even play the games cause your system keeps breaking down. PS3 is one of those systems that has a high possibility of system errors, why, because it has to much useless technology that a majority of people really don't care about.
Really if you go up to any one on the street and I ask them do you know what bluray is? The will probably say no.

Your logic is so stupid. Just because its the same stuff doesn't mean it isn't fun.
PS-that was a cute little 'burn' with the Johnson's baby shampoo thing. How did you come up with that? Genious.
And by the way, Bishop-why the hell would you buy a console based on power?!? You missed some good games on the ps2 this gen, and you will some good games on the 360 next gen.

That's why Final Fantasy games for PS1 and PS2 cost 300 dollars, right? Oh wait.
Tools for game making are becoming much better, so content creation won't necessarily take as much time as it did last generation.
"boots, once again, you are the biggest idiot on this site. Even out of the blatant xbox fanboys on here, you continue to be the most wrong and annoying. "
I annoy you because either what I say is true and you don't like it, or it's true and you don't get it, which is not my fault. And let's not start talking about idiocy when you write like a high school dropout.
"You say Oblivion is just the same thing from last generation, but all the games you seem to like are all sequalls also.-GTA, Gran Turismo, Devil May Cry, Metroid Prime-all sequals, all the same stuff."
Except the games I played last generation were good, unlike all the FPS which are the same over and over again; I'm sure "Morrowind", "Oblivion" and every other First Person game for 360 are so consequential they are gonna make all games follow the trend. Oh wait... they are the ones following an exhausted trend. It's so hard to add something new to first person games, that what Nintendo is doing is add a completely new input method, instead of solely innovating softwarewise (given that there isn't much ground left to innovate on First Person games).
"Your logic is so stupid. Just because its the same stuff doesn't mean it isn't fun."
How can my logic be "stupid"? If it was "stupid", then it wouldn't be logic, or would it? Don't blame me for your lack of understanding. Ironically you call me an idiot, but by that "logic" (or lack thereof), saying you were born with idiocy is an overstatement.
"PS-that was a cute little 'burn' with the Johnson's baby shampoo thing. How did you come up with that? Genious. "
Whoops. Don't forget to use your shampoo now, genius.

Once again, your 8-year-old antics are super cute.
What would make you biased isn't "for liking games on the consoles I like", but rather down talking games and other systems. We all realize PS3 is the console you adore, along with the revo aparently. But that doesn't by any means makes the 360 an unworthy gaming console.
You know whats funny? I can recall when the xbox first came out. I was just like you. Hated the shit out of it. Everything was stupid. The HDD, the user interface, the dashboard, the controller, xbox live, the break away controllers, games, etc. I adored my ps2, much as you do now.
Once I realized you don't have to be a prick and hate other consoles, I've come to have a place under my tv for the xbox along with my ps2.
I am not saying that you cannot and should not have a favorite console, because that isn't true. There will always be favorites. Last generation, I would have to say the xbox saw most of my time because of xbox live. Halo 2, Ghost Recon 3, and Splinter Cell saw most of my time. On the ps2, it was Socom 3. Before that, it was the N64. This up-and-comming gen, its open to anyone. But to talk absolute crap about a console you don't even own bewilders me.
Blue Dragon comes out in Fall, and I that is one game I certainly am looking forward to. Gears of War, Too Human, and Mass effect will all have my attention for the 360. If Sony can make Warhawk and Killzone look and play as good as those videos, then the ps3 very likely could take up my attention.
Guess, you're right. Games on other systems aren't any fun unless you'v actually played them. I don't expect you to give them a try. How can I expect any more of you with your funny little "Go use your shampoo now" he he he posts.

I Don't agree with a freakin lot (actually, almost everything) of what CrAzY American12 says, but I have to say damn, props CrAzY.
You usually are just as immature as boots, but you have freakin outclassed and flatout shown up boots.
boots (former bd) @ Apr 12th 2006 11:58AM
Diverse Genres > FPS
Yes Geof, assuming you are right, he "outclassed" me, despite the fact that he started with the insults. Nevermind that. You do have a point when you say... oh wait, I was reading something I wrote. Nevermind, you don't have any good points. Come back when you have something useful to say. Until then, get bent.
Anyway, isn't it hypocritical that he resorts to call me an 8-year old (actually, I thought I was 12, as you or him or both once said) despite the fact that he resorts to insults to actually make an argument (a pretty weak one). I'm not surprised who says it though; Geof, how typical of yourself: saying an empty comment in order to get a response. You got me, troll.
What's amusing is how you two expect an objective opinion on a "PS3 fanboy" site. That leads to conclude that if I called you two feebleminded, I'd be flattering you. You really *expect* me to behave in a civilized and objective way despite the fact that you are most likely entering a site full of biased fans. *sigh*
Crazy american just wrote *exactly* what he said the last time we "argued" about console favoritism and his story about how "everyone can have his favorite console"; but guess what dipshit, nobody cares... this is a PS3 fan site, and that has nothing to do with what I was talking about in the first place. The reason I said all those games suck is because... gee, I don't know... I've played them? Alright, I've played most, but I don't need to play 20 FPS to realize they are all the same game with a few tweaks (like better graphics and physics), just like FIFA or Madden (alright, not that exaggeratedly, the storyline changes a little bit; it's either Sci-Fi or WW2). The Japanese will support my argument on how Xbox 360 is offering the same thing (as of now) as the last generation).
You know what the best thing is? He didn't get a damn thing about what I said (again!); not like it matters, because he never had any credibility in the first place, as in Joystiq it is amusing how he's been owned time after time. One time I remember specifically that he criticized my nickname (because it matters), then called me: "FAT CHUNK. LOSER HEAD" (sic), and hypocritically enough (if not stupidly enough), he said right afterwards: "YOU HAVE IMMATURITY ISSUES". I don't think I ever laughed so hard at anyone on an internet thread. The difference is that I expose immaturity on purpose.
Anyway, again, Xbox 360 is flooded with uninnovative first person or shooting games (or a combo), and you can't tell me that's not true; that's exactly what you got last gen. That wouldn't be a problem with PS3 because if I get the "same thing" as last gen, I will get a wide variety of game genres. Not the same thing as last time, the same TWO genres.
If Oblivion, GRAW and PDZ are the best you can get, then damn, that's a pretty mediocre list, considering there are no action games, adventure games, fighting games (the ones that are good, not DOA; oh, and guess what "CrAzY aMeRiCaN", I said that because I've played it several times), non-first person RPGs, or a good bunch of Japanese games.
The games that are not first person (those which Xbox lacks) are usually a lot more open for innovation just softwarewise as opposed to hardwarewise like the FPS genre needs. Don't worry, you can all ignore this important topic, because 360 is flooded with this titles; then again I won't assume you will ignore it, I just don't expect you to *get it*.
There is light at the tunel, however. Yeah, Blue Dragon is coming out. I actually mentioned this to him the last time we ever posted on the same thread, before Crazy American brought it this time, so there's no point in mentioning it again. I'm gonna get a 360 by the time that title comes out, and a few other Japanese titles (like Lost Odyssey) come out. But just by the fact that Japanese will choose PS3 as their main console (along with revolution), the console will have a much wider variety of genres (especially J-RPGs) than Xbox 360, even when Microsoft is throwing money at Japanese developers. Few japanese will buy it, and Japanese developers will get sick of handing exclusives that don't sell because Microsoft is not welcome on the gaming industry, especially on Japanese Turf. 5 good (if they are indeed good) RPGs plus a lot FPS and Racing games won't cut it against 50 or more RPGs, let alone games from other genres. Ironically, the game that is being made by square
Let me remind you that just because games are sequels it doesn't mean they don't have any room for gameplay innovation (they most likely do, as it has happened constantly in RPGs, action games , adventure games and fighting games they usually come with more interactive, and more fun fighting engines, let alone deeper storylines and gameplay, not the same recycled gameplay with the same recycled storyline). All the games I'm waiting for have innovated in many things, as opposed to FPS. I've grown tired of the FPS genre because it doesn't innovate. I thoroughly explained before why FPS doesnt get more innovative than Halo (an unoriginal game, by the way). And since the japanese will most likely remain reluctant to the Xbox 360, the stream of japanese titles is unlikely to grow on 360 compared to PS3.
In the end, American said I was being "cute" when he actually used the same "shampoo" comments to retaliate (as if it was going to bother me). Except of course, I don't take everything as seriously as he does. It's awesome how these guys get so easily irritated by whatever I say, even when the posts are not even directed to anyone in specific, nor the immature comments to be taken seriously, as I explained before. Now I know I shouldnt expect you two to get that. Dont worry, I'm the immature guy, despite the fact that Geof is trolling, and both Geof and CraZy AmErIcAn are not even addressing the points made, they just fight with my immature comments. How cute.
Its obvious that Xbox 360 keeps getting mostly FPS, and that PS3 wont get mostly FPS.

ps hater, do you know what a D851iWM is? Probably not, it may have just come out, but if you're not into that sort of thing, then you're not going to know what it is - it's just common sense. When the first generation DVDs were coming out, you would get the same response.
Most of the posts here are completely unjustified. Why dont I have an Xbox? It doesnt appeal to me. It's quite simple. There are reasons, which I wont go in to as they are not relevant. My point is that everyone has their own opinions and own preferences, don't force your views as "right" or "wrong" as you or I may think they are.
But unfortunately, those of us who like useful, interesting discussion have been out numbered by whining, complaining, no-brainer bitches such as yourself.
So here's a tip, think before (or at least while) you speak, one of lifes great lessons.

Deluxe, I'm not sure I could agree with you more.
boots (former bd) @ Apr 13th 2006 3:43AM
I know I said I wouldn't argue anymore, so I won't. But I'll gladly answer to your questions. Do you know why I'm SICK of FPS?
I grew up with FPS. Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke Nukem were my favorite on the PC. I even got to play some of the first First (sorry) Person RPGs on the PC, which were ridiculously boring. Then the PC started getting a bunch of doom clones, one after another, ones that I didn't buy, but sure as hell played, like Hexen and Heretic. If that wasn't enough, I bought Doom 64 and it was a POS, even when the graphics were great at the time. Then came Goldeneye, and I didn't buy it. Then again, that was a great game, hopefully a friend of mine lent it to me and we played multiplayer for some time. But it's not as if I wanted to spend 30 hours like some people want with halo 2 because I find multiplayer to be too damned repetititive after some hours. I also have Metroid Prime 2 and I'm not in love with it (it's kind of original, but without a revolution controller it fails to distinguish itself much from Halo, especially by lacking a worthy multiplayer experience).
Furthermore, I don't need an Xbox to play Halo 2. I have even *finished* the campaign for halo 2. It was the worst campaign I've ever played. Seriously, if I had actually bought it, I would have felt raped. Like a waste of money. So I have to pay an extra 50 bucks yearly just to patch the game (for extra scenarios) and to play online? And the best part of the game won't even give me more than 5 hours of fun (exaggerating)? Where do I sign?
The last FPS I enjoyed was "Medal of Honor Frontline", that was the first (and thankfully last) WW2 FPS I ever owned.
Unless PS3 manages to get Killzone 3 the way it looked at E3 2005 (unlikely), I'm not buying it (unless it's cheap). The same thing goes for UT2007, Halo 3, Gears of War, and all those Doom Clones. I'm not buying a First Person Shooter game at full price, unless there's something really innovative that justifies it (like Red Steel for revolution, or "Xtremely Good Graphics" Killzone 3 CGI style).
In fact, FPS is not the only genre I'm against. I'm against most, if not all, realistic sports games. After the SNES era I got bored with them. They were all the same. At first I really liked Madden, FIFA 1994 (so old), and a few Baseball games. But since they became the same games over and over except with better graphics, I stopped playing them. I hate them. The only sports games I like now are the ones that actually add something to the mix, like the Mario Sport's games, or games like NBA Jam/Hang Time, NFL Blitz, Wayne Gretzky's Hockey, Sega's Outrun 2 SP (with the special games), Full Auto kinds of games (but not mediocre ones like this one; hell, give me Carmageddon again), and non-serious sports or racing games.
As you can see, I've either overplayed those genres, or more likely, those genres failed to keep innovating, which is natural considering there is not much room for innovation on sports games and FPS. Unless of course, you add a new input method. THat's why I believe the revolution will be very successful at reviving interest (At least for me and several others) in some genres, while creating new genres for both hardcore and newcomers.
I just hope PS3 has a huge variety of games like PS2 and PS1 (especially innovative ones). Or hell, even 360, in such a way that I stop caring I'm buying a Microsoft product because it has indeed "THE BEST GAMING LIBRARY EVER", instead of just promoting it for supposedly having something it doesn't really have.

blueray technology is a double edged sword in my opinion. the capacity of current DVDs will definatly not be enough in the long run,but i wont be paying $200+ for 30gig of CGI storylines.I cant see game sizes needing to jump from 9gig to 50gig anytime soon, but sony will definately want developers to fill the disks, which will drive up development costs.
