Sony sets up its E-Distribution Initiative
We've only heard about this type of thing a million
other times, but now Sony is calling all developers in a bold move to scope out potential products that could be
digitally distributed via their new online platform in the future. Their "EDI," or E-Distribution Initiative,
aims to give companies a chance to submit their contact information to Sony for a chance to foster a partnership.What kind of partnership, you ask? From the site: "Partnerships resulting from EDI will allow the developers' downloadable games to be published for individual purchase or subscription over SCE's direct distribution methods." So the first thing that's going to jump out at you is the PS3's online strategy. This open system could be incredibly innovative for smaller independent developers that may even be able to use this EDI to get their games out there. It would be an incredible feature to have access to hundreds of independent games.
Of course, this could also be a really great way to recruit some talent for the PSP as well (everyone knows it needs it!).

I agree this will foster some independent gaming shops to get a start.
But I also think this is going to open the flood gates of porn related games to flow onto the consoles.

It is already working for independent gaming shops with XBLA. Microsoft offers dev kits to them reasonably. Geometry Wars and Marble Blast Ultra are good examples.
I'm curious to see how well Sony can handle such a thing.
As for the first comment...I really hope Sony has some type of verification/approval process before publishing "any" title.

Grow up, please! Do you know how hard it is to be innovative? Just be happy that Sony is offering their customers the quality that we are getting with our 360's.
And even then, even though i admit i am somewhat an Xbox fanboy, MS hasn't been all that ground breaking anyway. The same thing that you get with the 360 has already been delivered on P.C. As much as it pains me to say this, it is quite obvious that Nintendo are the greatest innovators, just look at their history.
Even though I am not getting a PS3, I am content with my 360 and may consider Revolution (low price), I am happy that they are giving independent companies a chance.

Hold on, Microdot, think about this for a minute.
Besides getting the better exclusives and providing ridiculous unmerited hype, what exactly has the Sony done better than Microsoft? Can you enlighten us?
I don't know about you, but playing the PS2 is painful to me (physically and visually), especially when I have the other systems available to play.
As far as the PS3, we can only speculate because Sony hasn't provided the actual product yet. They could easily pull another PS2 disappointment on us...because we'll buy it anyway.
It's hard to be "scared" of Sony doing something "better" than Microsoft or Nintendo at this point. What I'm scared of is them pulling the same crap that they did with the PS2 hardware and peripherals.
I'm very interested in how the PS3 will work and how useful it will be. The proposed feature set sounds awesome, but I'm interested in what features actually make the cut and will be useful. The result determines how long I can wait before buying it. I figure after a lackluster PS2 and PSP that the PS3 will make up for the other two system's blunders. But after the crap they pulled with the PS2 (weak "Emotion Engine", unsupported hard drive, lack of online features, Disc Read Error for 12 versions of the console, useless Linux, etc), I tread VERY carefully.

wait.....i thought it was the xbox 1.5......so why is sony following in microsoft foot steps and offering every service micro has to offer......ow wait, i know! Maybe its cause sony realizes that real gamers dont give a fuck about blue ray and unless they deliver a good machine with good games and great online then gamers might just not wait around to be dissapointed yet again this generation. I enjoy rpg's like the next guy but there same formula story lines are starting to get old....oh and before i forget, sony you suck !!!!!!

Honestly... you guys just keep whining about how Sony doesnt have XBL, and then when Sony finally says they are going to have an online service you bash it because XBL was there first. Who freaking cares? Nintendo made the rumble pack, but do we see everyone kicking and screaming because all controllers now feature a rumble? If anything this is going to be good for you XBL lovers. It'll put pressure on Microsoft to be more innovative, to create more to separate themselves from Sony. Stop whining and realize its going to help you not hurt you.

I agree with 'Sony fanboy who say the light'. Why would Sony copy something thats 'inferior' to their super computer that plays games on the side?? Supposedly the 360 is only going for the ps2, yet the ps3 takes so many features from the 360.
My guess is thats why Sony delayed the lauch. Needed more time to see what MS did so they can copy it.

I have to disagree. The PS2 doesn't break record sales because it has outstanding hardware (basically no hard drive support, crappy online service, floppy analog sticks, shoddy DVD lasers, crappy DVD playback). The other two consoles are more robust and higher quality (controllers, disc drives, speed). The PS2 was popular mainly because of the exclusive games. If those games were available for the other systems...I don't think Sony would have kept its domination. To me, the Xbox was everything Sony promised in the PS2 hardware but didn't deliver. When I finally got an Xbox, I was pissed that I stood by Sony for so long because the system just provided a better experience for the games available. Same with the Gamecube. But most people stick with one console, so they'll never know the joys of the alternative offerings.
The "turbo-PS2" comment really gets me. The Xbox is capable of more than just speed improvements. Compare the multiplatform games...the Xbox just makes the PS2 versions look unacceptable (I still cringe at NFS:MW on the PS2). System link is never really seen on the PS2 either. Plus it already supported HD!
As far as Live, just because Nintendo and Sony say they'll have online services doesn't really mean they will compare in quality. So far, Sony's "online service" sounds exactly like the shoddy PS2 one with added friends list and chatting...performance doesn't sound like it will be any better. Since the services will be free, it's probably safe to assume that even more people will be annoying on them, and when mods come around, they will be uncontrollable.
I give praise to Nintendo because the WiFi service for the DS is great albeit occassionally aggravating. It's good enough for free and for a portable, but I don't think it would be acceptable for console gaming. I'm hoping the Revolution adds some good features to the service.

1. the 3d0 came 3 full years ahead of the playstation and it played music cds, video cds , and was the first 3d console. turbo duo, atari jaguar, sega saturn, and sega cd all used optical media before sony.
2. the dual analog controllers were, sorry... are uncomfortable, and for the fist half of the dual shocks life wasnt utilized by many games. you are however right about them making rumble a standard feature.
by the way using your logic the playstation was simply a 3d0 with a snes gamepad. no better no worse. at least the xbox was Better than the console it "copied" and made IMPORTANT improvements to console design.

by boots, I agree with you that Sony has brought some great things to the gaming world. One huge concept was that consoles should be backwards compatible. This in my mind has always been a huge point of aggravation having to keep three or four consoles around just so I can play legacy games. The double analog stick was a huge jump forward (to bad they forgot that one for the PSP). But to compare Nintendos WiFi, and Sonys alleged online service to a here and now is kind of unfair. When Nintendo and Sony actually have their online service up and running it will be time to make comparisons but right now I think we all need to accept that Microsoft is leading the market in Online gaming. Second I am not sure why people keep on blasting Microsoft for charging for Xbox Live and praising Sony for free online service. Xbox Live Silver package is free for those who buy an Xbox 360, you get basic friends lists and game play. If you want to bump up and get some extra features you pay. Sony has only ever said that their basic online service will be free, not all featured all access pass is free.
by fan, You have posted allot of great theories, but right now that is all that is all your comments are is theories. Nothing in your post is concrete, nothing is tangible. When the PS3 comes out maybe your comments will in fact be facts, but right now all we have is a lot of hot air and promises from Sony, and in the past Sonys promises are not exactly reliable.

The plane on there had a robot brain nicknamed EDI. It was so powerful it downloads every song of the internet and then disobeyed its owners because its coding made it have a mind of its own.

and since you threw in your fair share of bs speculation here is mine: the article above make a reference to a new chip called the viiv that allows you to run various entertainment applications as well as record, pause and rewind and fast-forward through video. the 360 has a chip on its mother board that microsoft has been very tight lipped about. could that be the viiv.
whats really sad is that even though im a xbox fanboy i still like the revo and ps3 and I really dont think that any of the 3 consoles will be better than the next one. Sony is going to sell the most for sure. but when the hype is over, nintendo will have a kiddy game that you can live without, microsoft will have its killer fps and ps3 will have 20 million jrpgs. and the fanboys wouldnt have it any other way

I never said that. I said they broke records, period. PS2 was outstanding because it was first DVD on the market. "Crappy DVD playback"? Every DVD player plays the same way to me. No hard drive support? On Xbox, It was only useful for patches on incomplete games and for the few people that really dislike game music. Xbox also had crappy DVD lasers. Thompson anyone? The ratio of failure (on lasers) is about the same. And let's not start with the possibility of many Xboxes (up to 70%)catching fire. Xbox 1 is the hardware with most failures ever built... having them replaced more often than the few PS2s that got disc read errors is another story, that's about costumer service, not quality of the product. Why even criticize the analog sticks on PS2 when both controllers on Xbox were crap? That's why it got redesigned once for Xbox, and again for 360, remember? Why are you visiting "PS3 fanboy" anyway?

If you are talking about "graphics", Xbox 1 came more than 18 months after PS2 came out. PS2 came out in early Spring in Japan, while Xbox 1 came out in november in the states. You can't ask much. I thought you said the games are the thing that counted?

Or lack thereof? Most games on Xbox 1 when it first came out were crap, so how can you call that a "better experience"? You are trying to pass your opinion as facts here. Most people that got PS2 were happy with the exclusive games it offered, thank you very much for worrying. Oh, and I had a Gamecube too, and while I liked its intuitive controller design, it seemed to lack a button (why was it so hard for nintendo to add a *second* Z-trigger? were they stupid or what?). At least the gamecube had some of what Xbox lacked: Games.

Let me refresh your memory for a second time. PS2 even delivered 1080X1920 resolution, something Xbox never did. And it delivered it on one of the most graphically impressive games this generation: GT4. 'Nuff said. Unacceptable? Come on. The graphics are marginally better. If the difference was the same as the one between MGS4 and Gears of War (too much detail versus some detail omission), I'd throw you a bone here, but the difference were simply "barely distinguishable faces on football players, versus barely distinguishable blurried faces". The difference was marginal.
Considering that PS2 had a negligible GPU, and that its graphics were comparable even though it came 18 months before, I wouldn't call the emotion engine "weak" pall. God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, God Hand, Resident Evil 4... yeah, "TH3 WEAK!". You were satisfied by a marginal increase in graphics. Could you be any more biased, please?

It doesn't need to be better (or equal) if Xbox LIVE costs. As long as it is comparable and free for gaming, that's enough. Nintendo's DS service is *very* acceptable; more than acceptable in fact. Sony also announced that their service would be centralized; not only that, but Microsoft even felt "flattered". You can stop thinking like a fanboy and assume things will be much better than on PS2. Oh, and for the record, I'm unimpressed by LIVE considering it costs that much for playing a game you already bought.

Check that... I meant to say the first DVD console on the market. It was also the first backwards compatible home console (or at least the first after the market crashed).
Oh, and since we are all about opinions, Suicide Ninja, Xbox was utter crap. No games, crappy controller, buggy software, shitty Thompson drives, it caused fires, and the hard drive sometimes failed. Yeah, "LONG LIVE XBOX", my ass. POS. Much worse than a PSP.

LOL. "Your an idiot". That sound like the typical "Your retarded". Anyway, to play online on PS2 you needed the adapter. How many people have their consoles next to their PC? Very few. That's part of the reason why shitbox got only 10% of owners online... and PS2 got even fewer because not only you needed a Network adapter (that is, it wasn't online out of the box), but you also needed to get close to a connection. If online was so important this generation, PS2 wouldn't have sold so well. Both would have fared much better if both were WiFi out of the box (but that would have been too expensive back then).
The DS doesn't have LIVE and its connectivity is flawless. That's why it has reached more than a million users so fast (also because WiFi is now more widespread). Microsoft made a mistake by not making their console WiFi out of the box, and it costs 100 bucks extra to do so. Revolution and PS3 will both be WiFi enabled, and free for gaming, according to official sources. Now that's next-gen. That sounds like they'll be getting online users really fast, much faster than Xbox LIVE. Or at least to me and many others, that will be very appealing for us to start connecting with consoles, instead of actually buying a 100 add-on (because I would need it anyway), plus a 60 dollars yearly payment.

Riiight, Fan? Copying and pasting Hardware specifications proves nothing! and as for your other "writing" you've supplied no evidence, nor have you taken into account that the Xbox 360 does the same. Both machines are very very similar in hardware, but the PS3, overall, has the most 'power', whereas the Xbox360 has the best graphics. This isn't a fanboy statement... Google it, but even then you can't really judge it until the competition is actually released.

Hey Xpox fangirls, I have these damning words for you.......6 billion loss on xbox1...... Now I'm assuming that a lot of that loss was due to high failure rates on machines & low sales on units. The 15yr old snes sold more than this. 60million I think (is that right bd). Thats a 3rd of a 15yr older piece of hardware... This is just one of the ways MS is trying to take our beloved hobby forward... Another example is how they have shortened console lifespans to just over 4yrs & dropped all in house support for their 6 billion shitbox1. In anyone but a fanboys eyes the xbox one was a failure on a grand proportion, from a business & gamers point of view & any other company that suffered this kind of loss would have been out due to bankruptcy. If MS lose equal to xbox1 on 360, I bet they won't be around for 720... In my opinion, MS look set to lose more than they did 1st up. My 360 is a dust collector. No original or great games whatsoever. I actually started playing ratchet & clank 2 again the other day (finished pt 1) & realised why I prefer sony's consoles & lineup of games. Now MS fanhoes, heres the challenge. Name 1 platformer on xbox1 that compares to the visual, gameplay, sound & fun quality that the ratchet series delivers............. And thats not even mentioning jak & gang.
I can't wait to get my hands on PS3 ratchet.

Ok to put it simply,
The PS2 was made with no thought of competition so they put a few things together and made a good system. They told stories of great features but at the time Sony thought it was too soon to implement those features. Then Microsoft comes along a year later with all of Sony's hopes and dreams and makes a gaming system with them. Microsoft immediately has the upper hand in hardware because of the fast pace of technology these days. The Xbox was made for XBL, NOT the other way around! Don't forget Microsoft IS first and foremost a SOFTWARE company. They designed the Xbox around the idea of Xbox live. and they didn't have to try to hard because all the hardware that makes PS2 said 'online experience' except for one thing, a hard-drive, So they add the hard-drive, throw the current gen video card in the box, a current gen Intel chip, and they are done.
Sony started these ideas but decided not to put them in the PS2, at that time broadband was still scarce in private homes. They decided to wait until PS3. Now with XB360 and its normal hardware anyone can pick up at their local CompUSA, XBL has evolved just enough to keep people happy. Now PS3 comes with truly next-gen technology, truly next-gen games, and they finally get to add their dream of an interconnected game world with its online service and PSP connection abilities. It started with Sony don't forget that. So don't talk about Sony stealing Microsofts Xbox live idea, because Sony was thinking online gaming when Xbox was still in Bill Gates's womb.

you mean like when i sent in my 360 for repair... and it was going to take 3-4 weeks. then i exchanged it, and had the same problems with drives and overheating as i did on the first one, at which point i got fed up and sold the piece of shit? yeah... thats a much better experience than... well... maybe getting slammed in the balls with a jackhammer.

The list includes lots of titles that are multi platform. But i agree that saying beforehand that it will have better games is a little speculative.

No. While the GPU in the PS3 is only sligthly more powerfull the CPU in the PS3 is much better than the Xenon. You will see much better physics and AI on the PS3 as the developers get more comfotable with the hardware.

360 does come with a harddrive if you buy the premium version, which I did. And all games are allowed to support caching from the hard drive.
Alot of the things that you know about the PS3 are speculation. i'm not saying it isn't going to live up to those standards, but you have no HARD evidence. I wish people would realize that you can't compare a working product with an unreleased products specs. The difference in specs won't allow MUCH better physics and AI. And also, where is your proof, I'd like to know your knowledge on these things. Don't do the typical thing and say.. "Well, I'm a game developer for the PS3 and it Roxx0rz". I wish people would stop trying to prove that one is better than the other, when it is fairly obvious they're incredibly similar.

The 360 GPU will be much better and more effectient than the ps3 GPU. The ps3 GPU is slightely more powerful than an RSX. The 360 gpu will basically (in simple language for you people) do whatever the ps3 gpu can do and then some.

Now the specs sheets Sony releases, that is what they hope to acheive when everything is all said and done and they have their vaporware system put together. So you compare a CPU to CPU and a GPU to GPU. (thought someone of your claimed brilliance would know this). You can't, however, compare system to system because of what I have said....there simply is not ps3 right now.

The 4 billion dollar loss was reported LONG before the end of 2005. By the end of 2005, according to several investor relations documents, the Xbox division lost another *extra* billion dollars. I thought that would have been common knowledge for you, given that you are an Xbox fanboy.

Then stop comparing them, you dumb shit. Even with unified shader architecture, it is not proven that the ATI 360 card could beat the RSX (also, unified shader cards are not so new... they came once a long time ago and they were discontinued; do you wonder why, putz?). It doesn't matter that nVidia will make their future cards have a unified architecture; they have to because that's how shader model 4 will work. It's not more effective, nor faster, it's just different, or "Efficient" in some way. Discrete shaders are faster for the single purpose they are made for than unified shaders, but unified shaders can work as pixel and vertex shaders... so in some things the RSX will be better than Xenos, and viceversa. It depends on how the programmer works. It will also depend on how they rely on the CPU. CPU can also do graphics, just like the emotion engine did all or most of the graphics on PS2, achieving a similar level to that of Xbox even when it came 1.5 years before the Xbox (and even when it had a negligible GPU). Don't underestimate the power that PS3 can deliver, considering they have both the RSX and the Cell, which can do graphics very well too (PS3 was actually going to be cell processors only, but that would have been too expensive). The only way we'll be able to determine is when both are out and at its fullest (and assuming the rumors for the PS3 OS aren't true, otherwise we'll never know its true graphical power); until then, anyone's guess can be as accurate as it can be ridiculous.

I was trying to translate to actual english, so one would have thought that you meant by saying "your brain must be jarred" as if using future tense (example: "You must be killed", as opposed to "You must be dead" or "You must have been killed"):

Hey smellidyke. That list he had does not include most of the japanese developed titles we may/will be getting. You see son, developers are the biggest innovators not nintendo, sega, MS, Sony, these people just provide a platform for developers to innovate. For this reason alone, is why sony single handedly owned the console market after the death of the nintendo of old, which was after the snes's reign.
All you retards that think nintendo are some kind of innovators need to give some examples to back up your fanbitchisms...... As the way I remember it, the n-64 biggest & best game was rare's goldeneye (MS wrecked that company with it's so called innovation), so all nintendo did was provide the machine, sony provided the PS1 which had too many top games to mention, so sony won that battle hands down....... Now lets get on to the GC, nintendo made another platform for capcom to provide the best game for..... nintendo's lack of innovation ensured they lost rare & most other top 3rd party developers & even nintendo's own flagship franchise Mario was a flop in sunshine (Iknow, I bought the machine with/for that steaming pile)....................
Now lets move to the least innovative, most un-originally, copycats in the industry....Yes MS, they saw sony's great success with ps1 & thought...."Wow, they made that look easy", so Bill the original thought stealing thief jumped in......... huge shock hey bill, can I borrow 6billion please Bill...... MS's 1st machine came 18mths after sony's & guess what, MS added dvd playback.........jeez, wonder who done that 1st? Was it sony?...............Yes retards. .......Then they thought they'd be really original by having the world 1st online console......Well, they thought that everyone had forgotten about the dreamcast, didn't they??? The only (so called) innovation MS came up with, was to charge us on top of our broadband fees, for the privelage to play something we already pay through the teeth for online). Now thats innovation.
Sony's innovation over the last 10yrs has left the competetion for dead as they single handedly blew the misconception out of the water that video games are only for kids & nerds who can't get a root. They took it mainstream, which in turn drew bigger developer support from everything to pc developers to upstart companies.......... They made the industry grow up.......where nintendo couldn't & still haven't lost that KIDDIE ONLY factor.
Now with PS3 they are taking a much bigger gamble than either competitor with blu ray...... And for these reasons I shall support sony by buying their machine on launch for simply offering me something different...... Sure I may pay a little extra because of the blu ray drive, but it will be minimal as opposed to the huge benefit of HD movies out of the box. Now MS on the other hand offered dvd playback with xflop1, but only after you bought a remote control......... whereas sony's 18mth older machine offered it out of the box.......... Now MS offers standard dvd playback out of the box with 360.......thats last gen, not innovative................ Now you have to buy the extra drive to watch next gen movies on 360....... & they don't even have the balls to flat out support one of the formats until a winner is determined for them....... So this just confirm that MS let everyone else be the innovators & when success is determined they jump in trailing, following & copying as usual.

The difference is that Xbox 360 has a year advantage over PS3. PS3 has a lot more titles in development 7 months before launch than X360 had 7 months before launch. PS3 lifespan is probably set to last longer than the one set for 360, and also, PS3 is not set to be a failure in Japan, so it will probably end up with more Japanese titles shortly anyway.
Oh, and remember that the PS2 generation isn't over, so developers are gonna try and squeeze as much profit as they can for the (true) next-gen. Since PS3 is compatible with PS2 games, that won't impact PS2 game sales like 360 has impacted Xbox 1 game sales with its mediocre (at best) backwards compatibility.
There's too little known about PS3 right now to make an actual judgement about it. On the other hand, 360 has a disappointing First Person games mostly line-up. I've seen Oblivion already, it is ANOTHER first person game, and while the graphics are nice, they are much better on Fight Night Round 3 (which isn't an exclusive anyway) or Burnout (again, not exclusive).
I'm waiting for the good titles (like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and Dead Rising) to come out. Even when at this point Xbox 360 seems to be gathering some nice exclusives, I expect (as of now) that the PS3 will end up having better and more exclusives as the PS2 and PS1 generations. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong, but nothing is certain.

They offered it to Apple, whos analysis of the cell came back as saying it wasn't as powerful as claimed, and so they went with intel chips. I know you've heard this before.

If they had any business sense they would either commit to their preferred disk app. & give reasons why it is better, or they would say that neither are relevant for gaming & we see no reason to add one or the other as te console we have released is finished & does not need cheap add ons (like sony's ps2 hdd or cd add on for genesis). Instead the masters of marketing confusion have said, "oh, we may support hd dvd, then 1week later when some major movie industry players committed to blu ray they do a 180 & say they may release a add on blu ray drive.
