PlayStation 3 and eBay, so happy together!

When gamers saw a gritty shortage of Xbox 360s last November, it didn't take long to observe the effects that had on the open marketplace; namely eBay. Some consoles were selling for as much as $10,000 and could hardly be taken seriously. Others, however, were boasting prices a few hundred dollars above retail and were selling like hotcakes.

This trend follows a cut-throat mentality that retailers believe could score them some extra cash. Think about it: if retailers can sell most of their PS3 stock online and get twice as much, where's the incentive to deliver to everyone else?

Gamers are going to have to deal with this when Sony releases their new console. Don't be surprised to see a similar drastic shortage that leaves many would-be owners waiting for weeks or months to get a PS3. By the same token, keep your eyes peeled for eBay to have many of the consoles sitting there for hiked up prices far above retail value. The question you should ask yourself is: Are you willing to spend way more money like this to get a PS3 on time?
