MGS4 realtime video
A realtime demo of MGS4 has popped up on the interweb. In it, various things are discussed such as the implementation of self-shadowing, Depth of Field, and various filters for the coloring effects Kojima and gang are going to use for crafting what is sure to be another masterpiece. It's a bit more on the technical side, but reveals such tastey nuggets of information such as Snake's mustache containing the same polygon count as an entire enemy soldier in MGS3.

I am pretty sure I have seen this before. It is nothing new as far as I know.
Murphy @ Apr 27th 2006 8:05PM
Holy crud! His mustache has the same poly count as one enemy soldier from MGS 3?! The detail is freakin' extraordinary!!!
The_Solidshadow @ Apr 27th 2006 8:10PM
"the implementation of self-shadowing, Depth of Field"
Lol, you know both of these were in Halo 2 on the Xbox 1...
"Various filters for the coloring effects"? Sounds like a modern-day version of different sprite palettes. Could be wrong tho...
Paul @ Apr 27th 2006 8:12PM
looks great... too bad in game graphics wont be anything near this...
Scapegoat @ Apr 27th 2006 9:02PM

xbox 360 cannot compete with that. And as if it was not enough, the PS3 will be the cheapest Blu-Ray player available worldwide.

anyone else find the women being shown the demo annoying as hell

That's a comment from someone who only owns a PS2 and not an Xbox, Gamecube, or 360. MGS3 looks horrible compared to say, Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) or Resident Evil 4 (GC, not PS2) or Call of Duty 2 (360).
If anyone didn't notice, the camera is what is controllable, not the character. The main thing this demo proves is that FMV's don't need to be prerendered and recorded...they can be realtime...but that deters the need for the extra BD space, doesn't it?
They did a good job with what is presented, I just wish it would have been a different game. It's hard to be excited about a game featuring a guy that masturbates in lockers and hides in boxes. How about some Sam Fisher?
mestaice @ Apr 28th 2006 6:35PM
Yeah it's old but i haven't seen it with subtitles.
For the guyz who said, depth of field and self shadowing has already been done on Xbox. I say yes.. but.. it's not about what types of effects you can achieve, it's about the quality of the effects. Making HDR for example in 128bit FP is very different than making it in integer or low FP precison. That's the (big) difference.
For a first "hands on" of the hardware : stunning. I hope Koji will take advantage of the SPU soon, it will be amazing.
ps: sorry for the english, it's a third language for me ^^
Scapegoat @ Apr 28th 2006 7:28PM
Fanboys aside, are you people serious in the fact that you think these graphics are shit?
Adam @ Apr 28th 2006 9:00PM
Wow, I think this video is older than the PS2!
Fear @ Apr 29th 2006 9:23AM
I know. If the MGS series wern't so shit and horrible games, i'd be happy for the PS3. But since MGS sucks balls, all this hype if silly. Please, show us the new Resident Evil game on PS3 or something next time!
knockout @ Apr 29th 2006 10:28AM
First of all, this video is at least 2-3 weeks old (when i found it on YouTube).
To the rest of comments: you are thinking this won't be in-game? The guy moved the light source and everything acted accordingly, and you still think this won't be in-game?
I guess some people will never "believe" until they will have the consoles in their hands. I believe these guys did an amazing job with this game so far (as much as graphics are concerned). It's only natural that they restricted the movements of the camera and of Snake; most people know what a high level of textures and models need to be done for such a demo. The artists were instructed to create assets only for the "camera path".
So stop your whining.

Ninja Gaiden looks better than MGS3? Please. Ninja Gaiden is not a graphical masterpiece. It looks very similar to Devil May Cry (even when DMC came out 3 years before).
"Of course it can't. The 360 is much better actually."
I guess you know because you own both dev kits and a 360. But wait, shouldn't you be playing your 360 now? Oh, I see the problem... Recommendation: NYKO Intercooler. It might make your 360 work. Don't get your hopes up though, that doesn't mean it will be fun.
"That's a comment from someone who only owns a PS2 and not an Xbox, Gamecube, or 360. MGS3 looks horrible compared to say, Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) or Resident Evil 4 (GC, not PS2) or Call of Duty 2 (360)."
That's a comment from someone that not only might be making a false assumption (out of nowhere), but that owns a 360 and realizes that the difference between its graphics and Xbox graphics aren't that much.
Again, the difference between PS2 and Xbox is marginal. PS2 with its 300Mhz+ "weak emotion engine" and a negligible GPU was able to deliver very similar graphics to that of a Full-fledged nVidia GPU combined with a 733Mhz Celeron that came 1.5 years later. You call that weak, which is laughable.
"If anyone didn't notice, the camera is what is controllable, not the character."
So? We haven't seen ANYTHING like this on the 360, as in rendered real-time. Gears of war doesn't come close. Oh, and have you ever seen worse graphics when playing the game than when there is a cut-scene made on the engine?
"The main thing this demo proves is that FMV's don't need to be prerendered and recorded...they can be realtime...but that deters the need for the extra BD space, doesn't it?"
No it doesn't. For so much detail, you still need BD space. For games like the getaway, you need the BD space. Just because 360 developers are forced to compress or cut it doesn't meant that PS3 developers won't use the extra-BD space. Even Mark Rain, staunch supporter of the 360, said that they will definitely make 20 to 30 Gigabytes of content for PS3, and that they don't really know how 360 will last much time with a DVD-9. Especially, if developers *choose* to deliver pre-rendered scenes, and why would they have to be restricted not to if they don't want? Multiple disc solutions don't work for every game, sorry. Oh, and multiple disc SKUs require extra tests to see where content goes, instead of simply putting everything on a single disc and testing only one disc. What more, you might end up wasting a lot of disc space by having to add the same content on several discs, and it's always better not to have your game interrupted to switch discs.
Even if I'm wrong in the above, extra BD space helps for delivering a single SKU everywhere in the world, which saves the developer or publisher costs, let alone it's great to have an option to choose which language I want to play. You know, like in almost every DVD movie you buy.
"They did a good job with what is presented, I just wish it would have been a different game. It's hard to be excited about a game featuring a guy that masturbates in lockers and hides in boxes. How about some Sam Fisher?"
And I wonder if you want to ever be taken that seriously. What comes next, some final fantasy bashing and Halo crowning? Yeah, and classical music is horrendous compared to Pop Music, as you can see by the sales numbers and trends. *sigh*
Paul @ Apr 29th 2006 4:27PM
It may be the cheapest blue-ray player on the planet, which is cool, but 360 will have one of the cheapest hds on the planet... none of that matters. We are all most likely early adopters, neither will drive sales of either the console OR the device... it is good to get into the hands of the consumer but if sony has another beta max on their hands this wont save them either.
MGS are great games, but this (even if it was old) is unimpressive and dissappointing. Luckly they have 7 months to get it right...
Honestly I think the 360 graphics look great and I expect just as much with the PS3. I think many people are expecting on WAY too much out of either system, especially this early in the game. Remember how much the graphics improved on the Ps2 and Xbox over the life of the system? Gears of war will look hot. MGS will look amazing. Halo 3 will come around and blow it away and then PS will pull out something else and so on. I understand that this is a fan boy page but why cant we just all be fans. The competitive nature is better for everyone, the companies and the gamers
anta @ Apr 29th 2006 4:29PM
boots thank you for saying that and scarying away all the Xbox fanboys in the site.
Fear @ Apr 30th 2006 8:20AM
Devil May Cry looks just as good as Ninja Gaiden? Thanks for that, you made me spit coffee all over my monitor, i'm laughing so hard right now! Perhaps you should go watch some gameplay videos or yet, buy an xbox and play the game. Its easily much much better, Dantes head consists of one oversized polygon, half white (his hair) half skin color.
And former bd, its funny how you said stuff about 'Intercooler', when infact, the percentage of faulty xbox 360's is lower than the average gadget/softwares percentage. Good luck with your PS3 though, I remember a ton of PS2's were faulty.
And why are people saying Killzone 2 is a Halo killer? (Not on this website, other places..) Wasn't Killzone 1 very very crappy? The story line crap and basically it was a Half Life 0.5? It was terrible, scrap Killzone 2 and make a good game for the PS3 and actually make good games instead of all these rendered shit titles like MGS4 and Killzone.

"I do have the dev kit, and no, I can't play my Xbox 360 while at work, hence my post here. LOL"
Nice to know that 360 developers can't play 360 at work but can roam PS3 fan sites posting fanboyish comments.
Thank goodness real developers aren't that stupid.

Hey Fear:
The reason Killzone wasn't as successful as it was planned to be was because the game was rushed; it is called a possible "Halo Killer" because it *can* become one for its better, more original storyline. After all, that's what most FPS are about these days, since there aren't many gameplay changes. The reason people say a "Halo Killer" is needed is because Halo was very succesful, not because it's an excellent game, but because it made accessible for casuals something that existed a long time ago on PC, and brought a mainstream storyline (take a mix of Star Trek, Star Wars and the typical "American Hero"). Halo is not a highly innovative game, so a "Halo Killer" shouldn't be hard to make with the right marketing, as long as it isn't rushed like Killzone 1 was.
Funny how you say Dante's head is an "oversized polygon", when I thought 3D games were comprised of polyhedra. Also, only a fanboy would say Ninja Gaiden looks *much better* and that would rather wait 3 years for an inferior game (on the terms of gameplay, storyline, intellectual property, originality, and company that makes it) just for marginally better graphics and shitty camera movement on a system that has very few games worth buying.
Anyway, since you think you can rightfully assume I've never played Ninja Gaiden, spit your coffee all over your monitor again (I must admit it's an amazing feat for you to maintain the coffee inside your mouth while you read instead of swallowing), by watching:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HHsUfConpY
(Thanks "omg")
Since you assume I've never played an Xbox game... what a horrible console it must be since its successor can't even beat the graphics on PS2, even when PS2 came out 5 years earlier (especially when PS2 has "horrible graphics!", as you all say).
Oh, and there has only been one machine more defective than the Xbox 360 (a 33% defect rate, where 4% is plain dead out of the box, 15% scratches discs, and the rest heats up too much; not the number that comes directly from microsoft or that could have also come out directly from your rectum; who knows though): the first Xbox: a whopping 75% (66% generated too much heat, while 9% had faulty drives, so it's hardly a Sony exclusive; some even say that this is a generous number). I guess that's why you keep posting here instead of actually playing games.
If Sony didn't fix its 10% or so mistakes that's out of the question (which seem to be more than the Xbox, but that's natural given its installed base), but only Microsoft sells machines that are prone to cause fires (it applies to both their machines). And just for the record, PS3 will unlikely have the same problems PS2 have, but i'll let you do your homework and study how Blu-ray works.
For consoles with no hardware flaws, there are Nintendo consoles... that is, if you want to play mostly Nintendo games, and very few 3rd party exclusives (or ports, even).
Eric @ May 5th 2006 2:29PM
First off, this is an old vid, old news. If you've been tracking PS3 news at all in the past 6 months, you would have seen this a long time ago. I saw this not too long after the first footage of MGS4 was shown.
Secondly, anyone that thinks this is prerendered has the mental capacity of a drunken retarded monkey. I swear you people deny its obvious real time credentials just to start fanboy wars. Unlike other Sony games *cough KILLZONE cough KILLZONE*, Kojima has credibility and integrity, and he's not stupid. If he says it's realtime--it IS realtime.
Enough talk, we will see soon enough.

Re: mestaice
You Microshaft Fanboys sure do spend alot a time dissing PS3 before it's even out, and in PS3 fan sites at that (sore losers). If X360 is so great, why aren't you playing on it? And for your info if you go back to MGS roots (b4 even PS1) and count the units sold it is in the Top 5 game series ever and it's not available on anything else.
What you guys nothing to do, but play lousy games on HeXbox 360? At least PS3 fans will be able to shop, surf, explore the internet, play all music and HD movies. Don't like a game? We can write our own or Mods for games like UT2007! Will you HeXbox 360 people be able to do any of that? No, Nada, None! "A duh what do we do now with fellow Hexbox 360 fans? Duh, I don't know all we can do is play games a... a... duh!" Losers!!! You're all losers!!! Go cry in your own forums!
Check the numbers Loser dudes! HeXbox 360 sales are in decline (everyone waiting for PS3). Doubt if they make 7 million sold by PS3 launch!!!
Hey with full dev tools and Linux we'll be playing HeXbox 360 games just for the hell of it. Halo 3 will be my first pick. After all, HeXbox 360 games were developed on PowerPC Macs with OS-X and PS3 will have Linux installed and the ability to run OS-X natively! Bwaa.. ha... ha....
