Europeans to get steeper next-gen prices
Sorry European gamers, it looks like you'll be getting the short end of the stick yet again.Atari has dropped the skinny about the pricing of some next-gen titles slated for Europe, and it doesn't look pretty. These higher costs probably won't bode well with gamers, but it wouldn't be a shocker to see similar price hikes all around the market. So just how much will Europeans have to pay?
Sonic the Hedgehog on PS3 will be available for around 68 euros (that translates to about $87!). World Snooker Championship 2007 is even higher at 73.99 euros, or almost $95. If you thought that the console alone was going to run you up a pretty penny, then you better keep saving because it looks like the games are going to be a steep investment too.

I will not be paying $95 for a game in this lifetime !
Sonyguy @ Jun 1st 2006 1:59PM
lol what are they going to do next, tell us the controllers will be $200 each??????
visionrider @ Jun 1st 2006 2:04PM
This is a good thing for microsoft they will clean up big time sony rip us off in europe the price difference between usa and europe on PS3 in UK £429.00 which is alot more than $699.00 then games are a lot more to I had thought about a PS3 to go with my PS2 and XBOX 360 I will get a Wii instead and a HD DVD drive for my 360 and still be in pocket.
nirodhie @ Jun 1st 2006 2:10PM
Such prices can only mean one thing...Sony has something up its sleeve that will justify the price tag...Just like with the HiMD and Connect player/Sonicstage
Tristan @ Jun 1st 2006 2:36PM
This just shows you how hard it is to dev a system tells how much games will cost. Sony screwed up on that part. The creator of the first person shooter and one of the best programmers in the world said that its not worth taking the time to program for the ps3s cpu. The guy who started doom and quake. So Sony is really making it hard on people.
Paul @ Jun 1st 2006 3:30PM
Or that the dollar is so week they have to try and make up for it in europe because they wont be making any money here.
That is what it tells you.
crimsonimpact @ Jun 1st 2006 3:59PM
Hmm... $87 is just above £45 and many XBox 360 games are going for about £50, so that seems about right. Yes, it's too much; I think I won't be getting new games then, I'll just have to be getting pre-owned ones!!

Who exactly are Sony's "Target Audience"??? Pricing indicates it would be CEOs such as Paul Allen and Bill Gates!! Oh wait...thier loyalties lie else where...

Tristan:
I'm a Nintendo Fanboy, but boy, I think that statement's wrong. First of all, Carmack is a PC developer. He really doesn't know or care very much how the console development cycle works, and it is very different. Second of all, He's a PC developer: developing for a system that adds and adds, and never really changes. Of course he likes PC-like architecture, he's never tried anything else.
And no, he didn't say taking the time isn't worth it. He said it's power doesn't spring forth like bunnies. Make no mistake though, the difference between the 360 and PS3 in terms of power is that devs will already be approacing the max for 360 (the result of excellent development tools and massive proportions of silicon dedicated to boosting efficiency of the remaining proportion of silicon). PS3 games will continually get more advanced, lead by developers who do have the time and skill to squeeze the power out. The PS3 is significantly more powerful. It's just a matter of squeezing.
The trick is that sqeezing is what provides the dynamic in the market, and keeps us buying games for 5 year old systems.

You have to pay for quality. Blu-Ray movies cost ~$20 more than they do on DVD due to the high production costs of the new format. Since Sony has said that ALL games will come on Blu-RAy it seems the consumer will pay for the cost of production, just like with the carts for N64.
Of course it is all worth it and I would easily pay $100 per game to get the qualiy that Sony is giving us. Come November I will be Playing Killzone 2 at 1080P on my 2 HI DEF TVs via Dual HDMI, not the analog junk you will get from others.
If you want the best sometimes you just have to pay more.

oh yeah boots...
Well when I hit the lottery and have enough money, I am going to hooke up 3 ps3's to my 6 70 inch plasma hdtv's and I am going to pay my butler and maid to play with me because since I have to say in a blog that I have all of this stuff, I must not have any friends.
ozymandias @ Jun 1st 2006 11:56PM
boots... wtf. if you pay 100 dollars for a killzone
that looks and plays like the video shown at e3 2005 thats fine. I dont mind paying for a great game and if every game looks like killzone or 8 days then sign me on. but sony has yet to show 1 playable game that looks that good. I know its possible to make games like that (gears of war, mass effect, and crysis for example) but
where are they? and if these games can be sold for $60 or less, on other platforms, whats wrong with sony. if the ps3 is b/c, why not put games on dvd roms until blu ray movies reduce production cost? but i guess fanboys and hardcore gamers alike will swallow hard and take it with the promise of a "next gen" killer app one day.
Paul @ Jun 2nd 2006 8:23AM
I also forgot to mention inflation.
At 24 I fully expect that I will be paying 100+ for games before my end
Fan @ Jun 2nd 2006 8:36AM
You wont pay 100$ for a game. These are european prices and european prices are higher than american.
Here, in Norway, we allready pay 600kr(100$) for new xbox and Ps2 releases. Some new Xbox 360 games cost 800kr(133$) at the most expensive stores.
What this article says is that next-gen prices will be the same as new current-gen prices.
A.F.I. @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:06PM
ok so u guys are saying could go for €68-€74???
That seem normal I'm in Ireland and Xbox 360 games range from €60-€80 depending where you buy them. I always imagined that games on bluray would cost around €120 lol
Ciaran Gallagher @ Jun 4th 2006 5:59PM
its still more expensive than 360 games...
If I had $600 at ps3 launch time, I'd sack the ps3 and go get an xbox 360 for much much cheaper.. and I'd have enough to buy extra accessories, games, xbox live etc.
You can already get Amped 3 for £17.99 brand new from play.com and most games on ebay will go from between £20-£40...
Tai @ Jun 11th 2006 11:04AM
When you talk about Europeans getting shafted, spare a thought for Australians who never get a mention at all. The price hike is likely to hit our shores where new 360 games can cost over a hundred AU and our DS games cost 70 bucks a pop
