PS3 through the eyes of a 360 fanboy...
No, this isn't another article trying to explain the PS3's price, nor a rip on Sony. The article at Gaming Nexus, written by a guy who admits to being a Micro$oft fanboy, takes an objective analysis of Sony's new machine. If only other XBox fanatics could take such a calm approach to their competition. Now, since the price point and Blu-Ray stuff has been beaten well beyond death, some other points are worth mentioning.About the controller: it's not a Wii ripoff, says Charles Husemann, the author of the article. He says "the technology has been around in one form or another for years" and Nintendo is packaging it in a consumer friendly way, while Sony is just dusting it off and tossing it on. Another advantage is the ability to turn the PS3 controller's tilt feature off (then why can't a rumble feature be turned on when the tilt is off?! We can dream...) while the Wiimote is fairly, well, standard. Backwards compatibility is a good reason for keeping the same controller scheme. There's no learning curve to getting back into PS2 or PSX games, which is great for those of us with extensive game libraries.
About ripping off XBox Live ...
The author has this to say about XBox Live and Sony's online service: "Aggregating demos, online content (like game trailers and videos), setting up multiplayer matches, and micro transactions is nothing new as to a degree America Online and other content providers have been doing it for years if longer. All Microsoft has done is to create a successful service that brings a concepts together in a customized interface for the Xbox 360. I'm also curious why people aren't saying that Nintendo's virtual concept isn't just a knock-off of Xbox Live arcade, it's the same concept right?" He has a point. Saying anyone is copying anyone else in the console world is just wrong -- the technology was just moved from computers to consoles. It was inevitable. Microsoft just did it first, which sort of makes sense. It's Microsoft.
Sony isn't going to charge for multiplayer matchmaking, which is a step in the right direction, really. Also of note for Sony's online system is the fact Sony has the corner on audio and video. As in, movie studios support Sony more than they would Nintendo or Microsoft. As such, what's to stop these studios from releasing content available only on Sony's online network? Or Blu-Ray specific features of a movie release (included game demos, etc).
The article brings up a lot of great points, but these are the only ones that deserved a good explanation. From a 360 fanboy, no less! Check out the article for the other bits.
[Kudos to Charles for this article!]

See but if a Sony fanboy were to say something like this, it would be refuted and shot down by the rest of the console junkies. :D
"OMFG, damage control."

Respect! But guys, he can not be right, remember it's from Sony !!!

"Sony isn't going to charge for multiplayer matchmaking"
SONY NEVER FUCKEN ANNOUCED THIS!! HOW COME ALL THESE WEBSITES/MAGAZINES SAY ONLINE PLAY IS FREE, WHEN SONY THEMSELVES HAVEN'T?? SONY SAYS "BASIC SERVICES ARE FREE" UHHHH MULTIPLAYER IS NOT A BASIC SERVICE!!
HOLY SHIT, GET IT THROUGH YOUR FUCKEN HEADS!!
Tondog @ Jul 13th 2006 6:26PM
"UHHHH MULTIPLAYER IS NOT A BASIC SERVICE!!"
Not according to Microsoft. Sony's definition of basic service is probably different than MS's.
I want this one to go on Joystiq. The reaction would be hilarious. It would probably blow their mind about how someone could actually say some good things about Sony while supporting another console.
ONE MAD GAMER @ Jul 13th 2006 6:32PM
MS'S XBOX LIVE SILVER FREE MEMBERSHIP (BASIC) DOESNT NOT INCLUDE MULTIPLAYER
FIGURES.. SONY WEBSITE = FALSE COMMENTS
Tondog @ Jul 13th 2006 6:43PM
I made a typo in my post. I meant to say that multiplayer is not a basic service according to MS.
You made a "false comment" too there, but I'll give you the benefit of doubt and assume you meant that the Silver level does not include multiplayer.
I'm not going to overreact to your comment because I realize that people do make typos occasionally. Unforturnately it seems that you are unable to come to that conclusion.
Oh, and one more thing. I think your caps lock key may be in a permanent state of pressed downness.
Xbox Fanboy=False Comments. Silver Live service does not have multiplayer.
Tondog @ Jul 13th 2006 6:45PM
Blah, remove that last part. It was a dumb thing that I didn't want in that post I had.

"We don’t charge for the basic functions of the network like matching services. Things like that are taken for granted on a PC, aren’t they? There’s the feeling of why a game console gets to charge for a service that’s normal on a PC. So, we just made the basic services available, and based our business on the contents," Ken Kutaragi
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060612-7040.html
I'd say, according to the above interview snippet, online play (matching service) is free as well, and only the premium content (games/music/videos) will cost you extra. But as nothing is online yet, and nobody has a PS3 at home to comment on the issue, we'll just have to wait a little longer and jump with joy or sit down disgruntled when we find out ;).
Cage @ Jul 13th 2006 7:27PM
And people know what the service is REALLY going to be like how? Oh...thats right Sony didnt even give info at E3. A full-fledged service that is expected to compete with Live had no info at the biggest expo of the year but yet fanboys (gotta love em) point out ALL of the benefits of this new service. AL7AIR = fortune teller?
Bertrand @ Jul 13th 2006 8:02PM
The really important innovation in Live, the one that makes you play more and buy more games, is not matchmaking, it's achievements and global gamer score.
Max Howell @ Jul 14th 2006 9:33AM
Face it, Sony have innovated nothing in this space. They deserve credit for making console gaming popular, but generally they watch other people take risks with technology, and copy them.
Sure motion sensing and multiplayer stuff is not new, but Nintendo are taking the big risk making it the only input format, and MS have shown us how net-connected consoles are a good idea and how to implement it well.
I can't see any counter arguments that hold any weight, but feel free to prove me wrong.
Cabbage @ Jul 14th 2006 1:17PM
I'm not bashing the PS3 or anything, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo wanted current gamers to go through a learning curve when playing Wii. They talked about trying to put old gamers and new gamers at the same starting line.
Both strategies make sense for their respective companies. Sony sold 100 million PS2 consoles, so they don't need to grow the industry to be successful, just rely on PS2 gamers to pick up a PS3. Nintendo sold only 20 million consoles so they really need to look outside their existing userbase.
JacKal @ Jul 14th 2006 2:22PM
Can't we all just get along?
*ahem*
Imagine 360 and Wii... and PS3... no matter how you toss the dice... it rocks for me... don't forget worth also mention-ing... is the PC
So hap-py for gam-ing...
AL7AIR @ Jul 14th 2006 3:13PM
@ Cage
I'm no fortune teller, I just surf the net looking for info, and when I find them I share them ... as simple as it gets. OK, the conclusion in my last paragraph might be a little optimistic, but I - and others - wouldn't mind if Sony really offers their online service that way.
And no fan boy here, I own all last-gen consoles, and already have a 360 hooked up with a Gold Live Account to play while waiting for the other two to arrive. I'm there for the games, not the console itself, not the cooperation behind it, not for the input device, not for the high definition experience, just for the fun while playing ;).
Whats with the Moron throwing F Bombs and can't spell. @ Jul 15th 2006 7:02PM
Why do these people get so mad.
If you want to get mad, get mad at microsoft for charging you for your XBox Live Account.
I personally cannot stand shellin out $60 for my XBox Live Account.
I'm glad Sony is not charging for their Live Service.
Yes F-Bomb Boy... It will be free!
Sony is planning on making their money on the excess content. Microsoft has already found out what a money making machine the excess content they used to give for free. Once Sony gives their online play for free, you will be overjoyed when Microsoft has to follow suit to try to hang onto their small NextGen lead. To no evail however when sony takes over in probably less than a year.
