360 exclusives won't hinder PS3 sales, unless...
Unless you really can't get enough of those FPS's and sports titles (in which case you probably have either the original Xbox or the 360 already). That was a joke -- don't take it personally. Although Microsoft has acquired a 12-month exclusivity deal for next-gen FIFA and Pro-Evolution Soccer, this won't damage PS3 sales in the UK (since soccer is a bigger deal there than the US, "supposedly"). Marketing Director of Chips, a retail franchise, said that "Microsoft is really pulling out the big guns, but it won't change sale predictions for the PS3 due to the hearts and minds that Sony had already won over." Brand loyalty to the rescue, huh?Independant stores like Action Replay and Gameshop (not Gamestop) agree, saying how the PS3 will sell all its allocation even if there's no... killer app. That's such a terrible term, but it's growing more common. Anyway. While this may or may not end up true, other groups do concede that Microsoft has made a mighty beast with their marketing and sales angle. What do you think? Will brand loyalty help keep Sony afloat until they do find their... killer app? Terrible term. Anyway.

Fuck soccer. Make the Europeans play Madden and find out what real football is.
Yay jingoism!
Dron @ Aug 25th 2006 4:25PM
The PS3 will sell out at launch no matter what, but you can't downplay Microsoft's move here. Its very bullish. FIFA '07 and/or Pro-Evolution Soccer are "must have" titles for most gamers in the UK, Europe and Latin America. I think that as a result of Microsoft's exclusivity deal, most soccer fans will prefer an xbox360 to a PS3 during 2007 holiday season.
SuicideNinja @ Aug 25th 2006 5:19PM
"Real Football?" Just because there's a different "American" version doesn't mean it's more "real".
I find it funny that most of the world likes "soccer" yet Americans think their version is somehow "more special".
It's one of those few topics that makes me regret being an American.
Tfcdogbert @ Aug 25th 2006 5:53PM
Real football, try rugby football, no wussy body armour there.. anyway to my point the power of the ps3 is making the console overpriced, last rumor i heard was at 450£, and without the games to sell the console's price sales will flop a little in my view after they shift their initial production run to the fanboys, you need games to sell the console and people will just say "sod it" and go get themselves a 360 which will be cheaper so they can play their favoured game.
Brian @ Aug 25th 2006 6:10PM
SN,
I wasn't being wholly serious. Although I do believe that football is a better game in every conceivable aspect than soccer, except for fan passion on the pro level. But also maybe it wouldn't hurt Europeans to do what they keep telling us to do and giving another sport a try.

yes

It might sway some people from buying one right away, in the UK... But I doubt it's going to hurt sales drastically.

what about resistance? seems like only yesterday the 22GB monster was the best thing since sliced bread.
ozymandias @ Aug 25th 2006 7:56PM
f.y.i, there are two good reasons football (futball?) is more popular than american football worldwide.
1.futball has been around, in one form or another, for thousands of years. for example, the olmecs played a game over 3500 years in wich a ball was moved from one end of a field to the other and placed in a hoop useing only your hips, knees, and feet. similar games could be found in japan and Germany as early as 1000 B.C. Even the Romans played a variation of the game.
2.Ease of play and cost. soccer has few rules and only requires a ball and 1 person to play. football is more complex and requires at least 3 people to play (two 1 man teams and the third guy is QB for both players.)
nothing wrong with either sport even though i dont care for soccer, futball, or what ever you want to call it.
and for the record american football is more special because we invented it LoL

"what about resistance? seems like only yesterday the 22GB monster was the best thing since sliced bread."
This article pertains to the UK and how their huge fans of Soccer games. When did Resistance come into play(even though it is going to be a killer game)?

now my rant on the reason more people like soccer than football... that was off topic and waaaay out in left field.lol

this news is actually one of the only reasons i'm subscribed to this blog.
which way winning eleven/pro-evolution soccer was going is a big key in which way i'm going to purchase. especially given grand theft auto will be on both platforms. and the fact gran turismo sounds underwhelming on the ps3.
i may just go the xbox360 route. eh, i can even throw in halo3 for kicks.
Alexis @ Aug 26th 2006 8:22AM
It's a hell of a coup for Microsoft, extremely well done, and by the time PS3 does get a FIFA title it'll be FIFA '08. But it won't change our predictions for the PlayStation 3 one iota.
tacolibre @ Aug 26th 2006 2:23PM
Of course the PS3 will sell out at launch as they will not have enough consoles to meet demand.
But exclusives like this and a growing 360 library of titles makes the PS3 look pretty lame this Christmas. Too expensive...no interesting exclusive titles that set it apart and overcome the overwhelming amount of titles out on the 360. Crappy controller...and yet to be revealed online features.
Why anyone would throw down money on this thing at this point is beyond me.
And the bashing hasn't even begun yet...just wait till all the angry folks that can't get their hands on one start flaming Sony. Not to mention the innevitable Hardware problems that will become immediately apparent shortly after launch.
sick of 360 @ Aug 26th 2006 4:11PM
The "Growing library" of 360 games? Yeah all the same genre (Either FPS, racing or sports)
I get so sick of 360 fans claiming this gen the 360 has the greatest games and thus the reason they bought one...Theres only 3-4 games worth getting on the 360...Halo3, GeOW, Huxley, Too Human and Lost planet...although Lost Planet may go to PS3 and Huxley will play far better on PC.
People always use the arguement: "I got a 360 for better games like halo 3, Gears of War......."And MANY OTHER GAMES I WANT"..."
Everytime they use the same sentence: "Many other games I want"....they don't name them cause they can't name them...
TheGuyNextDoor @ Aug 26th 2006 4:25PM
I've never quite understood why Americans are the only people who refer to proper football as "soccer". Probably because they disregard anything which they didn't come up with first. Referring to football as "soccer" anywhere outside of the US is actually insulting to some people. Rugby's more fun to watch, and more likely to have been the influence behind the padded-up version Americans like to colourfully refer to as "Football".
But that aside, here is a link to an article on GameInformer which states that Konami and EA are not wholey impressed with Microsoft's claim of exclusivity, and have stated that they will indeed be releasing other-format football titles during 2007.

In your face, Microsoft.
insane_cobra @ Aug 26th 2006 6:21PM
@sick of 360
"The "Growing library" of 360 games? Yeah all the same genre (Either FPS, racing or sports)"
You know, I'm really getting tired of such ignorant comments so I took some time to compile a list of already released Xbox 360 games that are neither FPS, racing or sports.
Ninety-Nine Nights
Dead Rising
Chromehounds
The Battle for Middle-earth 2
Over G Fighters
Kameo: Elements of Power
Gun
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Peter Jackson's King Kong
Full Auto
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
The Outfit
Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires
Tomb Raider: Legend
Final Fantasy XI
X-Men: The Official Game
Hitman: Blood Money
And that's without the XBLA games (which are often unfairly ignored by 360 haters - in past generations you'd be buying some of those in stores) and games that haven't been released out of Japan and/or Asia. That's more than two non-FPS, non-sports, non-racing titles every month - again, not even counting the XBLA releases. Not that bad for an allegedly FPS console during the transitional period.
matjet @ Aug 27th 2006 2:28AM
um ,insane, a fair few of those you listed ARE fps, sports or racing. id at least half that list if i were you.
anyway we all know this has been dubunked. kojima has said it was "exclusive" for this year. cause the ps3 version wont be ready in time and not becouse microsoft made any deals.
insane_cobra @ Aug 27th 2006 3:48AM
@matjet
No, absolutely none are FPS, sports or racing. Some are played from the first person perspective and some even include a number of FPS elements (King Kong and Condemned), but on the whole they don't belong in the first person shooter genre.
Likewise, someone could mistake Full Auto for a racing game, but in fact it's a car-combat game as that's where the focus is. I probably should've added DOA4 and Rumble Roses XX to the list because not many people could call them sports games with a straight face.
I said nothing about the soccer issue, but since you mentioned it... First of all, Kojima had nothing to do with it, I believe you meant Konami? Anyway, it may not be a screw-up after all. I don't think Microsoft ever mentioned any exclusivity contract, they just said the games would be next-gen exclusives for 12 months. Well, guess what, that information came from Konami's representative:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2006/0824-xbox360ownsfootball.htm
Late summer 2007 means roughly 12 months. Now, if Takasuka is right and the PS3 version of PES6 hits the shelves before that date, then this whole mess-up is Konami's fault just as much as Microsoft's.
tacolibre @ Aug 27th 2006 4:06AM
If you want me to name the excellent titles that I've owned and played...here's a few:
Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth
Prey
GR:AW
Oblivion
Fight Night Round 3
Kameo
Need For Speed
Top Spin 2
Far Cry Instincts
Battle Field 2
Your absolutely kidding yourself if you think there aren't a good amount of great Xbox 360 games. Remember the 360 has an attach rate of over 4 games per console...the highest attach rate of any console. There's a reason for that.
matjet @ Aug 27th 2006 7:57AM
yea full auto, i wouldve called a racing game, car-combat or no, you still go screaching around a track in shiny vehicle:p

Konami Says No Soccer Exclusives For Xbox 360

From 1up.com:
[QUOTE]
At its press conference earlier this week, Microsoft made the announcement that Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer (known as Winning Eleven to us) and EA's FIFA Soccer would both see a year's exclusivity on the Xbox 360, making its next-gen console "the platform" for soccer fans. This was seemingly a huge win for Microsoft, considering how popular Soccer is in the European and Asian territories.
Now, however, we're starting to hear a different story. Speaking with Winning Eleven producer/creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka earlier today, we learned that Microsoft made claims that were untrue. "The presentation was misleading," he told us. "We never said exclusive for one year on the next-gen platforms. We said this year. We were agreed that it was this year."
The PS3 version could ship as early as next spring, he admitted, though no timeframe has been set yet.
Interestingly, although EA has no official comment on this yet, sources indicate that FIFA may not have a year's exclusivity window for next-gen platforms either.

a2 @ Aug 27th 2006 3:00PM
I'm sure early adopters will pickup the PS3 right away. And with limited quantities available per territory, combined with a global launch, I'd be surprised if it didn't sell out this year. But, once the PS3 is widely available will be the real test. Just because it's a Playstation is not enough for me personally. I want to see how the games turn out first. This is primarily because of the expense.
tom @ Aug 27th 2006 3:20PM
Um, aren't MOST games FPS, sports and racing games an ALL consoles? The only major category that the 360 is really lacking is platformers. And, judging by how poorly platformers faired on the original Xbox, I doubt we'll be seeing a huge glut of those as well.
Considering the most anticipated or talked about titles on the PS3 are FPS and racing games (Resistance, Killzone, GT5/HD, Motorstorm), that argument needs to stop. It's an industry-wide direction, not so much the 360's focus. I'd actually go so far as to say the 360 seems to be heading towards the 3rd person shooter (GRAW, GOW) just as much as the 1st person.

Insane Cobra is INSANE
Ninety-Nine Nights = CRAP
Dead Rising = GTA (Been there)
Chromehounds = FPS in a Mech
The Battle for Middle-earth 2 = POOP
Over G Fighters = CRAP (I own this Piece of Dung)
Kameo: Elements of Power = Microsoft can't give it away
Gun = Crap and Practically a FPS (Third person view)
Condemned: Criminal Origins = FPS and CRAP
Peter Jackson's King Kong = CRAP
Full Auto = Duh Racing and CRAP
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter = FPS (While Awesome)
The Outfit = CRAP
Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII (Nice XBox1 Graphics)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion = FPS RPG (Awesome)
Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires = CRAP and same as 99 Nights
Tomb Raider: Legend = CRAP
Final Fantasy XI = I don't like this but many do. RPG
X-Men: The Official Game = CRAP
Hitman: Blood Money = FPS and CRAP
Don't make a list without making it;
1 True since many of these are First Person Shooters.
2 Don't list Shovelware in your argument for a Console.
3 The original comment you were slamming forgot to mention RPG which the Microsoft consoles are also famous for.
OH YEAH
SOCCER SUCKS! SO DOES RUGBY!
I Tried it. I did not like it.
I would rather watch Grass growing competitions.
It is boring. That is my opinion. I am entitled to it.
Don't try to change it.
Just reply back saying Football sucks, which it doesn't, it's better.

I KNOW, WHATS UP WITH THAT?
user @ Oct 7th 2006 8:00AM
360 exclusives? More like exlusive. Gears of War is the only exclusive they have worth mentioning this season.
The soccer games aren't 360 exclusive; they are also on PS2 and PSP. Also, those sports games appeal to the casual gamer and not the early adopters who will buy PS3 around launch.
PS2 and PSP have all the good exclusives this season.
