Say hello to homebrew on 2.80 PSPs

Over the past few weeks, the homebrew community has been working hard on a new exploit in PSP firmware that would allow users of PSPs 2.0+ (including the recently released 2.80) run homebrew without Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. NOPx86, a team of coders, worked to take advantage of a flaw in libtiff. What that means is that the potential for homebrew is here: and it's easy as well. The team released a "Hello World" application as a proof of concept, and you can try it out yourself here. Just extract the image, place it in PSP's PHOTO directory, and then try to view the image. You'll see the homebrew message working, even on a 2.80 PSP!
This is absolutely fantastic, especially because of how incredibly easy this is. Try it out, and who knows what kind of exciting new developments we'll see?
[Thanks PSPFan]

This makes me so happy I could cry.
The homebrew ap I want the most? The ability to increase the cache size of the freakin' PSP browser, I'd like PSP fanboy to load properly every so often. Also, it would be great if I could see the link destination of any link I hovered over. AND I'd like a scrollbar on the side of a page, to see how long the page is.

Will this work w/2.81??????????
tim @ Aug 28th 2006 1:55AM
Can anyone say too good to be true? i have not personally tried this out, and sure the page looks real enough, but i had thought for sure that sony was on top of this, especially after that last "downgrader" that just brikked your psp. kudos to them if this is for reals, but i/m just going to sit here next to my salt shaker a little longer.
FiredCylinder @ Aug 28th 2006 2:29AM
I just tried this and it seems to work great. Lets hope someone makes something that's actually useful with this.
Also, how do you make it quit? I had to remove the battery to get it to stop.
alex @ Aug 28th 2006 4:11AM
thats a lot of PSPs...and cool covers.
im not big on homebrew, but this looks cool anyways
Dave @ Aug 28th 2006 3:29AM
Yup, it works. Just watch out, as it will load as soon as you select the photo menu on your PSP, regardless of whether or not you click on it. Also, it will "freeze" your PSP for anywhere from 15-60 seconds before it launches Hello World.
Shane @ Aug 28th 2006 3:35AM
This is great. I hope some more comes out to exploit this soon. Maybe an eloader?
d @ Aug 28th 2006 3:52AM
I had it in a subfolder. It ran as soon as the subfolder was seleced. I just held down the power to turn it off. It executed immediately, and I have the absolute latest firmware.

Unfortunately, this is a bit late. The PSone-Emulator will be out in the next months. IMHO it would've been smarter to hide the fact that libtiff is still exploitable and wait for the 3.0 firmware to see if it's still homebrewable with this exploit. Now Sony knows about the ``security hole'' and it'll be easy for them to fix it. If the devs waited with making this public, we might've seen 3.0 homebrew from Day 1.

Very very interesting article - although I knew it before hand. Take that all you DS Fanboys!
Swish @ Aug 28th 2006 6:47AM
I tryed this on my 2.8 PSP the first time it worked the second and third time the PSP froze the fourth time the PSP shut off automatically the fifth time it worked again.........needs some work never the less this is amazing. The steps to this remind me of the downgrader that bricked your PSP plus they both had hello world text.
Sloberg @ Aug 28th 2006 7:53AM
Im so happy, Love these guys :D
Thanks to NOPx86, psp250, Skylark, Joek2100, CSwindle, JimP, Fanjita, Ditlew, HarleyG =)

So basically you're looking at a picture of a hello world process... Ok I see I need to go to dsfanboy just to get REAL HOMEBREW.
pixelator @ Aug 28th 2006 2:39PM
@13: It's simply showing that they've cracked it. A downgrader will follow shortly. If you think this is the extent of PSP homebrew or that DS is the one with 'real' homebrew, more's the pity.

JBONL @ Aug 28th 2006 10:38PM
So what does this do/mean exactly? After downloading it should i be able to download hombrew?
ZipperSeven @ Aug 28th 2006 7:38PM
It's a proof of concept. You can't use it with homebrew *yet*
Give it a little while, I'm sure that coders are hard at work...if you want to help, support a developer.

If someone, when the homebrew software becomes available (specifically ISO loader and homebrew access), wants to walk me through this, I would be willing to paypal them some dough. I am pretty much familiar with all of the lingo, have read the information guides, etc, but just need a knowledge filled individual who is willing to help me out. Again, I can do paypal or another form of payment (and I will pay by the hour or so, 50$ or so an hour)...let me know-- swybs@yahoo.com
FiredCylinder @ Aug 29th 2006 1:32AM
#19: No, it's just proof that they have found a new way to run code on a PSP. New code needs to be written to take advantage of this exploit.
