Grand Theft Auto talks smack about Sony's online plan
GTA creator Dave Jones doesn't feel Sony will be able to compete with Microsoft's lofty internet service. In fact, he completely disagrees with it. His reasoning is thus: "I'm not going to put my credit card details with five different companies for some bits of downloadable content." That makes sense. If we had to register our credit card info with the creators of every item we ordered off of, say, amazon.com in addition to that site itself, we should be a little concerned.Should we have to register our private info with every company for a downloadable demo? Should we let the publishers come up with their own standards for these online games? While it may keep the online service for Sony's system free (somehow that logic clicks... not really sure how), it could become a hassle and a nightmare. Leaving our personal finance information on any sort of internet medium is dangerous! But does that mean Sony's service will be inferior to Xbox Live? We don't know. There's no way to look at a young child and a pregnant woman and say to the woman "your child isn't going to be as smart as mine." You don't know yet. So let's wait and see, Mr. David Jones. You just might be unpleasantly surprised!

Another nail in the coffin...
jh @ Sep 8th 2006 12:42PM
David Jone's "created" Grand theft auto. He hasn't been involved since GTA II. His latest project is Crackdown for the Xbox 360. This has nohing to do with GTA IV.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Sep 8th 2006 12:50PM
@ jh
And Crackdown looks horrible! :D
serb @ Sep 8th 2006 12:58PM
which brings up the question
how much is microsoft really paying these guys?
ill say about a few billion........ya thats how desprate they are
munchie @ Sep 8th 2006 1:10PM
This "lets wait and see" argument is old and tired now. As a consumer...I should know all about what I am about to buy. Wait and see made sense at E3 of 05...but it's only 2 1/2 months from launch and Sony has promised much but not shown anything in regards to online.
Will you still be asking "lets wait and see" on launch as your shelling out $600 and $60 for titles who's online functionality is in question???
serb @ Sep 8th 2006 1:17PM
@munchie
i get were your coming from......but i think sonys gonna reveal all that in tgs......if not than that would be pretty stupid
well anyways its pswii for me cuz 360 only has fps which i hate=p
Cage @ Sep 8th 2006 1:26PM
"well anyways its pswii for me cuz 360 only has fps which i hate=p"
Another ignorant comment from an ignorant consumer. I wonder at what point you will jump on the 360 bandwagon and tout that as the end all be all. They have every genre you can think of (including Guitar Hero 2 which was confirmed coming to the 360).
Munchie hit it right on the head. If I had a service very similar to Xbox live or even a "Live killer", I would be showing it off NOW to build the hype as soon as possible. Wait and see...Sony delay...soon everyone will have to show their cards and I'm thinkin Sony has a 7-2 offsuit and the board is NOT 7-7-2.
serb @ Sep 8th 2006 1:50PM
@cage
do they have rpgs,action-adventure etc....
and go ahead tell me one good game on the 360 that is a definat exclusive and that isnt a fps/shooting game
(with the exception of dead rising which i played and enjoyed)
and yes oblivian is coming to ps3 so dont even try that one
ndoerr @ Sep 8th 2006 2:05PM
Yes, the wait and see argument is tired and old, but I wasn't too clear on the time constraints of it. I'm still banking on the Tokyo Game Show to reveal a ton of info we've been waiting for, refused, lied about, etc. When it's over, if there are serious, and I mean life-altering, questions that haven't been answered, I'll strongly consider my buying options (as in... not buying anything). I'm not a big online gamer, so it's not too big of a concern to me, but it's integral to more and more gamers these days. So, to beat a dead horse, "let's wait and see" =P
theburn16 @ Sep 8th 2006 3:36PM
why does everybody get sooo pissed off at sony for not sharing ALL of the info about the system and their online plans when we know NOTHING about the Wii? we know what the Wii is gonna look like and that the controller is totally different than everything thing else, but we dont even know for sure now if it's going to have a dvd drive much less how much it's gonna cost, how much more powerful it is than the lackluster gamecube. and oh yeah, i'll jump on the 360 bandwagon when they actually get a few good exclusives other than halo
Cage @ Sep 8th 2006 3:46PM
To theburn16:
1. Its $600
2. To me the Wii is really not competition
3. Sony's PR keeps spouting off and come off as a little too confident.
4. Its $600
5. They are the current market leader. There is some intrigue at what their system can due.
theburn16 @ Sep 8th 2006 3:50PM
that's fine, but why should sony show all their cards months in advance? it would only give MS time to duplicate any great idea and for the majority of consumers to think that Sony copied MS. it's all about smart business...as dumb as some of the people at Sony are, they aint that dumb...as you apparently know NOTHING about good business
Cage @ Sep 8th 2006 3:54PM
Just goes to show serb that you don't know much about the 360 to even make an argument. I'm not going to list all the RPG's and action-adventure games. If thats all you play then maybe its YOUR console (or collection of games) that is limited. To take a stab at someone the only plays FPS is another ignorant statement.
"and yes oblivian is coming to ps3 so dont even try that one"
Why would I want to tout that one when the game will be a year old by the time it would come (I say it "would" because youre wrong) to the PS3? Can you write similar to my style in your argument because its becoming hard to understand you...
Tristan @ Sep 8th 2006 3:54PM
They have Mass Effect coming, which is a really good rpg. Phantasy star online is going to be another one. They have fable. They have forza 2 which is going to be great. Sony has no good exclusives. Ressitence looks liek a xbox game. Halo 2 looks better then it. The only real good looking game is heavenly sword. warhawk is just another crimson skies which it cant beat.
Tristan @ Sep 8th 2006 3:59PM
MS has nothing really to copy since Sony has copied almost everything so far. MS has said there will prob be a web browser a long time ago. Sonys online buying will prob be doen through the web browser on their website.
theburn16 @ Sep 8th 2006 3:58PM
well if you're going to point out forza as a great exclusive for the 360, how the hell do you leave out gran turismo????? i mean after all, there would be no forza had it not been for GT. and to say that sony has no good exclusives is just being an absolute moron
Cage @ Sep 8th 2006 4:02PM
"it's all about smart business...as dumb as some of the people at Sony are, they aint that dumb...as you apparently know NOTHING about good business"
If good business is all hype and no show (wait...they do show cutscenes) then I'm taking the wrong business classes here at Sacramento State.
theburn16 @ Sep 8th 2006 4:10PM
like i said, they are morons...they hype stuff way too much. but the part they've got down right is the same part that nintendo has right, never show your hand before you're ready to play it
SuicideNinja @ Sep 9th 2006 10:49AM
I'm starting to feel stupid for still planning on buying a PS3. I'm going to hate it, just like I hated the PS2 and PSP. No rumble, probably a lesser online service, low-quality Sony product, proprietary media format, crappy controller...*sigh*. I know I'll end up buying it mostly for Final Fantasy XIII.
He's right; the decentralization of online service is going to be equally as annoying as it was for the PS2. All the PS2 network adapter is good for is adding a hard drive...assuming you still have an old model that CAN have a hard drive. The only thing a hard drive was good for was HDLoader...and even that is questionable. It made Crash Bandicoot (Wrath of Cortex) playable for my girlfriend (shortened the ridiculously long load times)...
serb @ Sep 8th 2006 6:26PM
ok @ cage, tristan and ninja
we know that you will never buy a ps3 so quit acting like your interested
2) y r u on a ps3 fansite in the first place, shouldt you be playing 360 or does it suck that bad
3)halo 2 is better than resistance?!? ur joking rite?
4)what has sony copied? plz rite now you go ahead and try to think of sumtin original and that people want to use.............ya its not that easy when everythings already been thought up
and as for the games, 360 does have a 1yr start so we
so just go back to 360fanboy and leave the ps3 to people who want it
Told you so @ Sep 8th 2006 10:22PM
You PS3Fanboys are grasping for the final straws now...
You keep waiting for someting good to chew on but it never does come. Well don't hold your breath for to much longer, you may end up dead like the future of Sony and BlueRay...
boots @ Sep 9th 2006 3:57AM
The GTA creator is as relevant as John Carmack nowadays. John Carmack hasn't made an original game, let alone a decent one, since the first doom; maybe that's why he's aiming for mobile gaming. Anyway...
"I'm not going to list all the RPG's and action-adventure games."
360? It doesn't have any. Hell, you don't even have a 360 yet (or have you bought it already to know what you're talking about?).
Mass Effect is another Sci-Fi shooter with a single coat of RPG, but it is not a Japanese-like RPG. The only two "truly" Japanese oriented RPGs right now are Enchanted Arms and Ninety Nine Nights and they both are mediocre. The only two "must have" (and that's questionable) Japanese oriented games are Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. I haven't seen Ninja Gaiden 2 announced yet for 360, nor a decent RPG made by Square, Enix, Konami or Capcom. As you said Cage, a good console has variety, and 360 doesn't have it.
Suicide Ninja, the "poor quality Sony hardware" is getting old and it's very rare anyway... you know why you haven't seen me online on Xbox LIVE lately? It's because of "poor quality Microsoft hardware". Nearly every 360 owner I personally know has seen its glitches, but whatever... I'm waiting for it to get repaired... AGAIN.

It's not like PS3 exclusives don't include a few fps/shooting games either.

Fable
Forza
Bio Shock
Mass Effect
Jade Empire 2 (Rumored)
Ninja Gaiden 2 (Rumored)
Lost Oddysey
Blue Dragon
Viva Pinata
Too Human
Project Sylpheed
I could say that I'm tired of swordplay or magic on the PlayStation, so let's stop with the Xbox only has shooters, huh? Fable was a GREAT game for the Xbox. I don't doubt that Fable 2 will be better. You may not have liked it, but it was received critically similar to Kingdom Hearts. Forza was unquestionably better than Gran Turismo 4 for ME. Part of it being that the Xbox has a better controller with pressure sensitive triggers for brakes and accelleration.
Bio Shock and Mass Effect are adventure shooters (refer to above comment about swords and magic). If you've played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, you will understand that just because the character uses pistols does not make a "shooter". Both look gorgeous and immensely fun.
Ninja Gaiden 2 and Jade Empire 2. Both original games are excellent, and while no sequels are announced, I think it's safe to say they are on the way.
Who knows how Mistwalker's games will be, but I'm excited because of the people involved and the art direction is beautiful.
Viva Pinata might be odd, but I think any strong consoled needs a weird, what were they thinking game. EG Pikmin for GC and Katamari Damacy for PS2.
Too Human's demo sucked, but it has promise. Hopefully they will be able to fix the technical issues, just as Red Steel.
You say that there are no decent RPG's from Square, but Final Fantasy XI is out and now down to $30 and Project Sylpheed is coming.
I have enjoyed Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, and God of War immensely. And I plan to pick up Shadow of the Colussus, Final Fantasy XII, and Okami soon. Hey, notice any similarities here? All implement swordplay and magic. But that doesn't mean the games are any less amazing. I don't like the media capabilited of the PS3 as it makes less sense to store music on my console and my computer than to just stream from my computer. But for those who don't have a computer it would be great. Mostly though, I just hate Sony as a company. Don't get me wrong, I also hate Microsoft, but their games division hasn't done anything yet to warrant that reaction from me. It just seems as though every time I read complaints from Sony fans about the Xbox, I get the impression they've never owned one?
munchie @ Sep 9th 2006 11:38AM
In stark contrast to everything Sony does...Microsoft has been very open with the 360 community on just about everything they are doing. They were showing off the 360 Blade system even before E3 05. Everyone knew exactly what they were getting and all the features that the 360 would have by E3 O5...a good 6 months before the product came to market.
If you remember then (E3 O5) Sony showed a bunch of bullcrap pre-rendered movies and revealed nothing about their console for another year...all while telling us to just wait for the PS3. E3 2006 comes along and they finally give us some info...but everything that we already knew...expensive price...stripped features...all of that was expected...Oh and a mysteriously absent Killzone. But we still don't know jack about their online plans except to say that they will be exactly like the PS2. We don't know jack about how the PS3 will compare to 360 as a Media Center extender and such. Will the damn thing be Plays for Sure compatible?
They are touting it to be an Xbox Live Killer...so if they are so confident that that's the case why withhold such information from consumers even now only 2 1/2 months before launch? Do they think that it's a given that I or any other consumer would gladly shell out $600 for any piece of crap they shoved out the door?

"Mass Effect is another Sci-Fi shooter with a single coat of RPG, but it is not a Japanese-like RPG. The only two "truly" Japanese oriented RPGs right now are Enchanted Arms and Ninety Nine Nights and they both are mediocre."
Well then the PS3 (or PS2 for that matter) dont have any good FPS. Your argument is that the Xbox doesnt have good, truly japanese oriented RPG's. What about people who DONT LIKE japanese RPG's.
You also keep sayin your 360 is in the "shop". On every post you make its in the "shop". Your trolling is getting old.
And lastly you say the console doesnt have this or doesnt have that. Then you give an example of that EXACT genre. You kill your own argument...again. You then simply write it off as "its not good enough". Well...Resistance and Killzone simply arent good enough.
Wait @ Sep 9th 2006 1:57PM
Does that mean each company can charge their own fees for online play, even though Sony says online play is free? What's this talk about supplying a credit card?
Told you so @ Sep 9th 2006 2:56PM
In response to Wait: The credit card will be necessary for buying extra content supplied by the game developers. So if you plan on buy the "Extra Content", you will need to put your credit card number in for each game. This is opposed to the 1 time you put your credit card number in XBOX Live. Although I’m sure Sony will have a prepaid card similar to the XBL Marketplace card. Anyways I would rather pay the subscription fee for XBOX Live. This means I can have great service and updates. Don't count on Sony having a free XBOX Live killer. You know the saying... you get what you pay for.
Tristan @ Sep 9th 2006 7:38PM
I will get a ps3 once the thing comes in white so it will match my 360 and my wii. Also when the thing starts showing games they said it would. NO game looks like a 600 dollar console game. The only reasonit costs that much is because of blu ray. If they werent to put lbu ray in it it would cost like 300 dollars. Halo 2 does look better then this game. This game has the graphics of black. If you would stop being blinded by sony and look at this game you will see that. I have a friend who used to be a sony fanboy. He eve thought halo 3 looked bad in graphics. Then I told him to look at the vid again and he saw it was amazing looking. Then i told him to look at resistence again and he saw how bad it look. How bad the ai is. Running in to walls and getting stuck. This is not going to be a good game. Its goign to bomb just like perfect dark zero did. That game was worked on for multiplayer and so will resistence so clear your eyes and take a clear look at how bad that game really is.
the_pwnerer @ Sep 11th 2006 2:37AM
Cage, you're funny. How's he trolling by saying PS3fan comments on a PS3 fansite when you've been doing that for quite some time with 360 fanboyish comments on a PS3 fansite? Your argument just died.
Moving on, it's widely known that Xbox 360 needs a more variety, and that it will need a lot more variety to penetrate the market that was once owned by SNES, PS1 and PS2. How can you say it has "TITLES OF EVERY GENRE" while at the same time not naming a good one for each genre? Games that are out and mediocre or that we know absolutely nothing about don't count.
Oh, and stop giving opinions on PS3 games... neither PS3, nor Resistance, nor Killzone are out yet, so STFU.
the_pwnerer @ Sep 11th 2006 3:00AM
Michael Walkowski:
Wow, FFXI! A dated, 4 years old, not so great MMO which pretty much makes Xbox LIVE useless, not to mention having a pain in the ass configuration which would make superior to use an old PC anyway! How sweet! And did you know that Project Sylpheed is an FPS? Yeah, it's Square giving the FPS finger to 360.
Oh, and come on now... Fable was a good game, but a single relatively good adventure game can't lift a console. And please, like Kingdom Hearts? Kingdom Hearts (both of them) are awesome in almost every way, fable is not *that* good. It's good, but not that good. Well, even when that's my opinion, it's still way more popular.
Also, talking about unconfirmed, and games that are not anounced is bull. What makes you think Ninja Gaiden would be exclusive to 360 anyway? Itakagi always said that he made Ninja Gaiden exclusive to Xbox because it was "the best hardware". By that logic, it would come out on PS3, not 360.
Bioshock and Mass Effect are sci-fi "adventure shooters" again. If you wanted to make a point though, you could have mentioned Lost Planet. Now that looks different, unlike Jade Empire or another first person perspective game.
Viva Piñata? Come on, all consoles will get their fair share of kiddy games, so it doesn't really matter. But if you're all about games like Viva Piñata, then play Animal Crossing instead. At least you got quality assurance there by it being a Nintendo game.
Forza, Too Human... OK, I don't even know why you mentioned Forza, isn't it a racing game? You know, one of the most popular genres on Xbox, and available in many ways on ANY console anyway? And about Too Human, we'll talk about it when it's out. You can't really say it's going to be good, especially after looking at the *cough* slideshow *cough* I mean 360 demo. It's sounding like Duke Nukem Forever in the fact that it's taking forever to be made.
Munchie,
Nice ass. Did you use it to get that little star of yours? Because I see no other merit in your posts by calling everything "your ass".
