Sony responds to the 1080p inclusion in the XBox 360
Perhaps you've read about Sony's response to Microsoft's 1080p "upgrade" over at Joystiq. If not, we'll sum it up here with a bunch of exciting quotes! We all love quotes.Sony says: ""It's unfortunate that Microsoft's external HD-DVD drive will not enhance the experience at all for the gamer. Sony realizes that to truly take gaming into the next generation requires a larger data format for both games and movies. PS3 uses the Blu-ray format for gaming, giving developers 50 GB of high-definition storage on a single disc, while Microsoft's 9 GB DVD gaming format is an obstacle for storing HD content."
Sony adds: "Furthermore, Microsoft's announced HD games patch is really just a compatibility feature -- upscaling lower-resolution content does not make it Full HD (1080p), something that PS3 can do out of the box."
A moment of silence... and then...
Microsoft reponds: "The facts are that with this software update, video and game content developed for 1080p will be output at 1080p -- native, not upscaled. Only content developed for lower resolutions will be upscaled." Also of note is that a Microsoft spokesperson said 1080p can be done on either VGA or component, but haven't confirmed that they will go the component route. "More details will come on how we're outputting but it won't require HDMI."

Did Sony report that the "lesser" PS3 will output 1080p via component?
I remember amongst the uproar that the "HDMI-REQUIRED" speculation was addressed by Sony.
Anyway, Microsoft could do the same thing.

they also didnt mention that the 360 can now output native 1080p content just fine. It only upscales lower resolutions, just like the ps3.

First of all, with DVD-9, they're never going to have native 1080p games on the 360, they might use it for the HD-DVD, but that's about it. Anyway, what's the point of a patch that upscales to 1080p, wouldn't any 1080p tv do that natively? And 1080i movies from HD-DVD would be upscaled from 1080i to 1080p just fine on the 1080p TV, because of the 3:2 pulldown interlacing on the format. I see no reason whatsoever for this patch.

bandwith is the problem with 1080p games, not the storage space. just fyi

Wow...I can't believe that someone at Sony would try and bold face lie about the 360 being able to output 1080p natively. It's been out all over the net that this was the case...and even so they still try an lie to make it seem like the PS3 still has something over the 360. As for the storage space argument...if games like BioShock, Gears of War, Halo 3, Forza 2, Oblivion, Assasins Creed and tons of other games that are out for PC can fit on a single DVD...then clearly that is all that is needed.
I can't believe they have the nerve to continue to BS the general public even though it keeps getting thrown back in their face.
Enough is enough Sony.

What;s wrong with the bandwidth? HDMI has plenty of bandwidth to display 1080p, as that's it is used for, I don't see a bandwidth problem, but the storage space is used for the different textures and videos and sounds, etc, those require higher space, mainly the videos. If they have 720p videos at 10 mbps, then have 1080p videos at 16 mbps or whatever (I don't know the actual bitrates), then it takes much more space to hold 1080p videos. Also 1080p would require much higher quality textures than 720p or 1080i (since 1080i is barely any better than 720p, by maybe about 0.6% or so). Anyways since the RSX was built for 1080p, it should have no trouble with it, but the 360's GPU wasn't made for 1080p, so it would probably have trouble rendering games at that resolution anyway.

It will do so many more things than the 360 we just know it. It will slice, dice, mow our lawns, clean our bathrooms, cure cancer, replace every pc. You name it sky is the limit. Not to mention the fact it doesnt give off a bit of heat, no fans or cooling source whatsoever. Sure a big leap from the developer kits to the final version. Sony is amazing they can fix all the problems with thier hardware and solve the worlds problems. Thank you Sony, we are in awe agian....Any games worth buying the system for yet? Waiting to see that news, fall of man? No thank you....
the_pwnerer @ Sep 23rd 2006 12:28AM
It doesn't matter how "natively" the Xbox 360 uses it; the thing is, all PS3s will have HDMI now. Nobody wants the low end 360 anyway, so you should compare the high end 360 with the... high end PS3? not anymore, you can compare it now with the low end, since as I said, it will have HDMI now. For those 100 bucks, you'll get backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2; a Blu-ray movie player; much bigger, content loaded games; better protected discs (they are harder to scratch... tell Ed Stasick to take note and forget the FUD he read on an Xbox site); and online play for free.
"Wow...I can't believe that someone at Sony would try and bold face lie about the 360 being able to output 1080p natively"
You mean that you can't believe Sony is using Microsoft's most common tactic, known as FUD? LOL
Concerned gamer, get a job if you think buying a PS3 is a waste. Seriously, if games such as Lair, White Knight Story, Fall of Man, Heavenly sword, not to mention highly expected sequels, such as Ninja Gaiden Sigma, DMC4, FFXIII, MGS4, God of War 3 and Shadow of the Colossus 2 don't call to your attention not even a bit, then how do you even consider yourself a gamer in the first place? Maybe you're a hypocrite, but who knows, right?
Concerned Gamer @ Sep 23rd 2006 4:11AM
I have a job actually, but thank you for your concern (Mechanical Engineer). I stand by what said, Resistance looks terrible. Good to see it is only 75% done right now. Not sure the extra 25 will help though. Halo killer? Nice to see they have finally came up with a "Hallo killer" killing the halo on the orginal Xbox? Impressive, will the ps4 have a halo 2 killer I assume? Come on the_pwnerer, seriously you cant be happy with the games you have seen so far for the ps3. I have my name for a reason, you may not be worried by what you are seeing from our beloved Sony, but a lot of us are.
Get personal all you want, it just shows you are concerend too, I feel your pain.....
BTW HD signal can be carried by component cables, or do I need a job at best buy to know that? Happy job hunting.
