The PS3's other controller
With all the talk of the Sixaxis, the PS3's other controller almost sneaked by under the radar. Of course, we're talking about the PS3's remote control. More than just a snazzy coffee table decoration, the PS3 remote will ensure that we can enjoy all of the PS3s Blu-Ray goodness from the comfort of our couch/bed. It looks pretty much like any other Sony remote and compliments the PS3 nicely. But does the remote hold any secrets? Does it contain an accelerometer that will give the Wiimote a run for its money? The answer to those questions is going to be a resounding 'no.' But it's fun to think about.

hey speaking of which... why do you guys still have the boomerand controller as your emblem?
bobeotm @ Oct 4th 2006 10:48PM
Well it does have one interest feature, its bluetooth, not IR. Meaning you could essentially be under your bed, pointing away from the televison and still controll the action. I dont know why one would want to, but its possible!!

I would laugh so hard if this did have gyroscopics and they planned to equal Nintendo in another aspect.

dude doesn't anyone else see this or is it just me i love the ps3 and all but damn that controller looks terrible maybe its just the picture but it looks so bland and lame like from the 70s
Burns11 @ Oct 5th 2006 1:34AM
Remotes from the 70's were all ultrasonic, meaning a mechanical button that struck a pole inside to create a specific ultrasonic sound.
Sony remotes, for the most part, have always been simple, uncluttered and effective. I, for one, always likes that about Sony's remotes, if that's not for you give Logitech time and I'm sure they'll extend their Harmony line to the PS3.

Not really happy about this. One great thing about the 360 being IR is that I was able to program my Logitech Harmony 880 remote to use with my 360. I was hoping to do that with the PS3 as well. My whole point of purchasing a $200 universal macro enabled remote was to only have to use one remote. Adding a remote just to control the PS3 for movies is very unintriging. :(

It needs a basic little screen for music selection, having a large TV illuminating the room will spoil the mood a bit when the lights are turned down on those cozy winter nights with the girlfriend.
It's also a waste of energy having a TV on just to select tracks.

i was thinking the same thing Roofus.
i like the idea of using bluetooth, if it makes the remore faster and more responsive. it may come in handy when we start seeing BD jada titles start comming out. but it hoes hamper me geting that universal remote that i wanted untill i get more info. in the mean time i had gotten used to using my tv remote to control the dvd playback on my ps2. (the ps2 uses standered sony dvd player protocol and both my reciever and tv remote work it quite nicely)
does anyone know if the PS3 has a IR port? maybe this remote is an optimised remote and not the only option after all.
xbox360dspsp @ Oct 5th 2006 7:51AM
Where's the PS3 headset? Am I only the only one worried that we haven't seen one yet?
SP @ Oct 5th 2006 12:19PM
we will probally usbe able to use one of bluetooth's head phones. like the one used in resident evil apocalypse.
PS3 @ Oct 5th 2006 12:35PM

The Wee-mote and the Pee-mote?
ktmracer @ Oct 5th 2006 4:45PM
It better come with IR. If not then at least RF. I use a Harmony 890. I will be so pissed if I can't use my Harmony on the PS3. I will buy a PS3 harmony if they come out with one, but I would still prefer my 890. Besides anyone who can come up with $600 for a PS3, either has a harmony, or can easily afford a harmony. Come on sony, don't make me use a POS remote on my new blu-ray player, while using a harmony on my old oppo DVD player, it just doesn't make sense. I'm okay with using bluetooth, but please include an infared port to. The 360 uses the 2.4Ghz controller and/or IR. The PS2 uses the dualshock and/or IR. Why can't the PS3 use bluetooth and/or IR.
