When will it be safe to buy a PS3? Let's see...
How does "whenever you feel like it and can afford to drop the necessary amount of money on it" sound? No? Damn, C-net, what do you think, then? Isn't it our choice to decide when it's "safe" to buy a console? No? Damn. Fine, why don't you twist the news and alter the minds of your readers? Let's go...C-net warns us that the first round of PS3's may be pretty glitchy with a high rate of failure -- they cite the 360 launch systems as an indicator. Sony had the same failure issues with the earlier generations of the PSP. There are other examples cited, but we're too lazy to talk about all of them. Let's cut through the redundant crap... essentially, they say to wait until the Spring of 2007 for your PS3 -- time enough to get the kinks out of the software, hardware, firmware, looseware, mooseware, juiceware, whatever. Are you guys worried about initial failure rates? There will be a few, for sure, but will there be more than normal?

They are right the PS3 will probably have a few problems initially.
But this is normal for life of an earlier adoptor!

"There will be a few, for sure, but will there be more than normal?"
Are you joking??? Surely you must jest.
Do you have any clue about Sony's manufacturing history? Take a look at C-Net and read up about the very high failure rate of Sony Televisions. Ever heard of a Sony VIAO??? Nothing but constant problems and a very high failure rate. Remember the PSP launch??? Everyone had like 5-10 dead pixels on their screen even after the launch was pushed way back (what did they do with all the extra time). Have you ever owned a PS2??? Because most people have owned 2-3 as they don't seem to last you long before suffering some premature death. How does Sony sell 100 million consoles? Get folks to buy 2-3 due to hardware failure. Do you own a Dell, Toshiba, Sony, IBM or Fujitsu laptop? Because I just had my 2 Dell batteries replaced due to Sony's huge battery recall (Over 7.5 million batteries recalled).
So when someone questions the reliability of Sony hardware...don't act surprised.
And that is just going on past history. But with reports of very low yeilds for Cell processors due to high failure rates and major problems with overheating consoles at TGS and an apparent rushed manufacturing...it is completely logical to expect some serious hardware problems with the PS3 at launch.

as long as its not as bad as 360's launch consoles i dont care. i got mine in april so it wasnt really a launch system and it still sucks the tray wont even close.it takes atlest 20 trys. and i have a launch PSP and i dont have a problem with it at all.

@ stumpie -- Don't mock me. I'm using a Sony VAIO right now. I've had it for 4 years and it's outlasted practically all my friends' laptops (HP, Apple, Toshiba). No problems with it at all. I've had my --first generation-- PS2 for what, 6 years now? No problems at all -- hell, the only disc read error I get is when I try to use some dumbass third-party memory manager CD (long story). No, my good man, I have not experienced the failure rate of Sony products, because in my personal experience, they are good products. End of story.

@Nick Doerr
You're are quite a lucky person there my friend as i'm personally on my 3rd PS2 as the first two had the infamous misalligned lens problem, made worst by the fact that Sony Europe made us Europeans pay £50 to get th console fixed (ie send you an refurbished console) while the rest of the world got them fixed for free, anyway i diagress...
My point is that any piece of hardware bought at launch will buggy and have a high failure rate and no one can really doubt that (though Sony and Microsoft will try), it's really more of a case of what Sony will do to apease early adopters when the bugs start coming out.
Alan @ Oct 6th 2006 12:06PM
I purchased both my PSP and 360 on their launch days and have had 0 problems.
ndoerr @ Oct 6th 2006 12:19PM
@ The Enlightened -- thank you very much! I really do know how lucky I've been. And I agree with your point completely. It's inevitable that there will be failures. It's all in how Sony plans to deal with it.
Jack Traid @ Oct 6th 2006 12:37PM
I waited about a year before picking up my PS2 and it is working just fine. My PSP was purchased a few months after launch and it still works perfectly. As with the PS2 I will wait a while before picking up the PS3. This way, if there are any bugs, the problems will be ironed out and I will have a larger selection of games to purchase. Many products have various issues and we deal with them as they happen.

No? Damn. Fine, why don't you twist the news and ALTER the minds of your readers? Let's go...
i think you missed spelled the word alter insted of later

I agree with ndoerr, don't attack the VAIO line, I don't know about their TV's but I have three VAIOs all of which range from 2-4 years old, I love them, never had so much as a hiccup out of any of them. Ask me about my old compaq, and HP. Not to mention those of friends and acquaintances that conked-out slightly post-warranty. My 1st gen PS2, still chuggin, 1st gen PS (that's right PS) still chuggin. I think it depends on the hardware owner alot of the time, I'm fairly bitchy about my stuff.
TheGuyNextDoor @ Oct 6th 2006 1:36PM
@stumpie
No manufacturer makes perfect hardware 100% of the time, you know that.
And as for "reports of very low yeilds for Cell processors due to high failure rates and major problems with overheating consoles at TGS and an apparent rushed manufacturing", you seem to have been selective as to the articles and information you have read on the internet. There are articles debunking all of these things. But which ones to believe?
RevJonathan @ Oct 6th 2006 1:55PM
Well, if you want any chance at modding a next gen console, you need to buy at launch.
clo1_2000 @ Oct 6th 2006 4:31PM
I'm not getting one till next year when there's a price drop, games I care about, and actual stock. I don't think they'll have any worse problems than the 360 did.
Jeremy @ Oct 6th 2006 4:49PM
Ive never in the history of sony products have ever owned a defunct system.
PlayStation
PlayStation2
PlayStation2+
PStwo
- All of which have been used for years in both vertical and horizontal positions for the purpose of playing games, music, and movies.
Two PSP's w/ no dead pixels.
I feel confident in Sony to provide me with not only a working product but a product that will please me greater than that of Microsoft or Nintendo.
Dustin @ Oct 6th 2006 6:53PM
Im not worried. I got my PSP the day it came out, I haven't had one problem yet. If you take care of your stuff, it will take care of you. (Plus, the Sony gods love me)
stewart @ Oct 6th 2006 9:08PM
I have a first generation PSP ( waited in Line ) and absolute have no problems. If I have heard of any problems - is from people that attempt to hack them and turn them into bricks.
I have an original Playstation and PS/2 and both have never had a problem.
Only console problem is my Xbox 360 ate my Tiger woods disk this sumer ( its not a first generation 360 ).
7r1ck13 @ Oct 6th 2006 10:03PM
Well I have a 2nd day of release PSP and have had not one problem with it, and it only has 2 stuck pixels(not dead-they light up but only white) and they are on the edge of the LCD..
As far as their record in TVs.. I work for a Cable Co. and I have to say Ive seen alot of TVs go bad in my 5 years in the field, only 1 tv was a Sony.. I even carry a 13" Sony TV around daily (the case is falling off) and it works perfect every time I have to use it..
I have even seen many old Sony (and Zeinth, 20+ yrs)console TVs that are still kickin great..
There are always gliches with the first run of equipment but what Im trying to get out here is that unlike what its starting to look like with MS(I cringe everytime I turn on my 360), The PS3 should last the length of their NextGen cycle of 10 years..
Just my take.. Tis why Im waiting til Spring to snatch up my PS3, other than thats where my Tax refund will go..
Foppe @ Oct 9th 2006 3:17AM
All first launch systems have a higher probability to have faults. Not every system have errors, but they still exist.
The Playstation had a cheap laser, if you was unlucky you had to place your unit vertically to play games at all.
The PS2 had a bad laser too that gives DRE (anybody remembers when Sony had to fix the DRE for free?).
The PSP had a faulty Square button and dead pixels.
