Why the PS3 is worth the price, Jamie MacDonald edition
We've barked up this tree so many times that the tree would probably bark back... even so, SCE Worldwide Studios Europe VP Jamie MacDonald has some more reasons why the PS3 is worth your Q: I already know the answer, but let's start this off on a negative note: Are you disappointed about Sony delaying the PS3 in Europe?
A: "I was gutted...of course I'm disappointed."
Q: Let's ask leading question: What would you say to people who want Sony products but feel they're thought of last, being in Europe?
A: "European consumers have shown that historically they don't mind that, because they end up buying as many PlayStations, if not more, than the US and Japan."
Q: Will the delay change your chances of winning the console battle?
A: "I think in the long run, PlayStation 3 will succeed because of the great product it is and the great software we make for it."
Q: What do you think of the Wii60 concept? For the price of the PS3 you can get the Wii and the 360 (Not... really... but whatever)?
A: "A PlayStation 3 console comes with a Blu-ray disc player in the box, it comes with an HDMI connection in the box, and it comes with a hard disc drive - so the kind of entertainment experience you can get with a PlayStation 3 out of the box really is unique amongst the consoles...it isn't comparing apples to apples."
On and on... the annoying part of the interview was where the interviewer blatantly tried to corner Jamie MacDonald with the PSP and it's supposed shortcomings (supposed only because he defended it really well). There are hard-hitting questions, then there's just pestering. This overall media bias is kind of annoying, but perhaps we're overanalyzing. What do you think? Is there a horrible anti-Sony fog hovering amidst the media outlets to the point of ridiculousness?

It should read why Sony is Screwing the fans and then telling you it's worth it. I guess they feel like they need to justify things some more. Justifcation is masterbation in the end you are only screwing yourself. Still though good post. It did have some good points but not enough.
Too much Hype @ Oct 6th 2006 3:52PM
How exactly is Sony "screwing" over fans? I am just curious about that remark. Care to elaborate?
insane_cobra @ Oct 6th 2006 4:14PM
Defending PSP really well? "the market for movies on discs of any type is not particularly great at the moment."
Um, what? I guess that's why you're putting so much effort into pushing Blu-ray then?
Really, the interviewer was relatively easy on him, there's no bias in his questions. Those are the questions that *should* be asked, but most reporters don't bother, they just ask the easy ones. I guess you think all those interviewers kissing Sony's ass are unbiased?
Oh, and brownie points for conviniently skipping over the issue the whole blogosphere is buzzing about, Nick.

You mean the part that everyone is quoting as Sony's arrogance again? "European consumers have shown that historically they don't mind that, because they end up buying as many PlayStations, if not more, than the US and Japan."
If you read it, it makes sense. If you strip it down like Bloggers do, it makes them look like asses. It simply states, European consumers have historically bought the equipment anyway, even though it was delayed. If they didn't buy them in the past, there definately wouldn't be a delay today.
insane_cobra @ Oct 6th 2006 4:27PM
Yes, it makes sense, but it's still not a sensitive thing to say. Talk about rubbing it in.
It's akin to that other piece of brilliance: "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games."
It's true, but it makes you look like a complete bastard and doesn't really help your company's image either.

Anti-Sony fog is about right, the fact Sony are number one in the gaming industry makes them cocky bastards that need to be put in their place, apparently.
And that will be the last thing on people's minds when they go out and buy a console.

news like this makes me overlook sony's arrogance.

Another question... could there be a reason for the anti-sony fog in the media? Or multiple reasons, perhaps.

When you originally tout a WORLDWIDE launch and then delay it in an area and justify it by saying your fans don't care sounds pretty arrogant to me.
Dan @ Oct 6th 2006 8:56PM
I'm kind of getting sick of people saying that the PS3 is such a great bargain, because it gives you more "bang" for your buck.
Let's put it this way. What if someone offered me their Rolls Royce for $100,000? That is an absolutely awesome deal, but.. it's still just too darn expensive.
Bub @ Oct 7th 2006 1:02PM
The media bias is tremendous. Microsoft has undertaken a massive dis-information campaign, much worse than when their original xbox came out. What's sad is that these people, tokens for MS, believe whatever they're fed. I'm sure the same people watch Fox news and other false media that courts huge corporations. I have noticed certain agencies, like Joystiq and Kotaku, backing off, but it's still ridiculous. They fell for it, and they think they're supporting America and a product that can't even get consistent 30 frames per second graphics.

I don't know about you, but for 30,000 I love my RX8 much more than a comparable 350z. (I drove both before I bought, and the RX8 was way more "fun" to drive.) Value for the dollar means a lot to me.

Wii60 Concept is BS!
Core 360 = $299
Hard Drive = $99
HD-DVD = $199
TOTAL = $597
This is an Apples to Apples 360. The PS3 is $499.
Where in this Equation is there money to buy a $249 Wii.

Is it me or are they lieing with the reply to this question...
Q: What do you think of the Wii60 concept? For the price of the PS3 you can get the Wii and the 360 (Not... really... but whatever)?
and the most important bit of the reply was...
"...it comes with an HDMI connection in the box..."
Does it? last time i heard the PS3 wasnt going to ship with the cables to connect to socket on the back of the PS3 to the socket on the back of your TV.
Sony--
NickT @ Oct 9th 2006 6:45PM
I agree with scott... first, you have to buy the shitty 360 for $300, then you have to buy the $100 wireless network adapter, then the hard drive for $100, another $200 for HD-DVD, and if all goes well, an HDMI cable for another $100... let's see: $300 + $100 + $100 + $200 + $100 = **$800!!**
orrr... you can just buy the PS3 with all that included for **$600**, plus the fact that its a PLAYSTATION, and last time i checked, sony does a good job of making gaming consoles
ohh not to mention... MGS4 is playstation exclusive
