Sony rep: No PSP price drop this year

If you were waiting for a PSP price drop to come in the near future, you should stop now because it doesn't look like one will come in time for Christmas this year. "We don't necessarily see the need to cut the price," John Koller, a product manager at Sony Computer Entertainment, told Reuters. "We need to offer broader value and introduce new consumers to what the PSP can do."
He went on to say there will be near 110 new games by the end of the year and that since the PSP is a diverse system, with the ability to play games, download video and enjoy media, its does not compare directly to the other handheld systems.
Wow, it sounds as if Mr. Koller is trying to distance the PSP from competing with the DS, which might not be a bad idea considering the current situation in Japan. Also, Sony better get cracking if they plan on shipping that many games because there are only about 85 days until the end of the year. Sony has promised us some pretty incredible things over the years that never came to fruition, and I'm afraid this may be another broken promise.

One has to keep in mind that in that 85 days is the coveted Holiday shopping season. More games are released in November and december than most of the year combined. So even though there are fewer days than games, it doesnt mean that it's not likely to happen. Heck, I remember weeks in november where 10 or so PS2 titles would be released, so it far from impossible.

Although a price drop wouldn't *ever* be officially announced beforehand (for obvious reasons), I do wish Koller and other Sony reps would STFU. When they say things like 'Europe doesn't mind waiting' and 'We see no need to lower the price' it doesn't exactly galvanize the gaming community to their cause. And I agree, they're not going to hit 115 games. Just another indicator this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
Seriously Sony, your mouthpieces need a muzzle.
Even so, that Kotaku link is mostly bullshit. What do PS3 prerelease discrepancies have to do with the PSP? 1 HDMI vs. 2? 4p vs. 7p? WiFi only on the higher model? Not exactly earthshaking conspiracy.

Actually, the PS3 still can support 7 contollers, but there arent any games being developed that utilize more than 4. Bluetooth allows for 7 devices connected simultaneously. For most, it will be 4 controllers, the bluetooth remote, a bluetooth headsets if they use all the slots.

Over a hundred more games by the years end? How do you release a hundred games in 3 months? This is PR bull****. When the end of the year rolls around and there have only been 40-50 new games released and someone brings it up he'll just say he was talking about ALL of 2006 or something stupid like that. Typical public relations trying to make ordinary facts sound extraordinary. I don't know about you guys but I'd prefer that companies were honest with us instead of these sad attempts to trick us. Its borderline insulting and it shows how they really view their consumers if they think this crap can work.
On an endnote I would definetly expect a price drop on the regular PSP since theres only $50 difference between it and the value pack right now. Sony just won't say anything about it until the day it happens since people would stop buying PSPs and hold out for the drop.

Both companies said they were not competing with each other from the start. Everyone knows they really were but it is not as if Sony is taking a new stand on the issue now that they are losing to the DS.
On the games, maybe he means by the end of the fiscal year which I believe is some time in March. I don't think they can get out that many games in so little time.
