Another piece of good news! Well, projected good news, since in the "format war", both sides are pretty much apathetic. Rightfully so, but given a few years down the road, market research firm Forrester has indicated results favoring Blu-ray by a decent spread. The basis for the champion's belt? Support. Think about who is supporting each format:
Blu-ray:
- Sony
- Disney
- Apple
- Fox
- MGM
HD-DVD:
- Microsoft
- Toshiba
- Intel
- Universal
Both have Warner and Paramount. In this respect, at least moving away from computers, Blu-ray has a large advantage (especially if that extra space yields valuable extra features). The other indicator? Console sales. If Sony can meet its 6 million sale quota by mid-2007, which
another study says they should easily be able to do if supply permits, Blu-ray will most likely take the front in the war. Don't get us wrong -- it's going to be a very slow, boring, long-term battle, but if this hypothesis presents anything, it's that Blu-ray is going to stick around for a while. Until then, let's enjoy our "old-fashioned" DVDs.

wow. Disney is supporting blu-ray twice, that's pretty impressive.
dasgooch @ Oct 11th 2006 1:37PM
Also noticed that New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers (I think they support both now) were left off HD-DVD. Good job PS3Fanboy another well checked post...

@3
Well, have to understand thi website only reports pro-PS3 news..
They choose to ignore topics that make the PS3 look bad, because well, in their minds alone, there is nothing bad about the PS3. It's like the Emperor's New Clothes.

Blu-ray is already scared, as they are behind where they want to be. Not the best place to start out.
Knoxin @ Oct 11th 2006 2:23PM
BlueRay is 10 Year old tech
speaking to sony rep that comes to the shopwhere i work, he says the movies are encoded in Mpeg 2 mpeg is nearly 10 years old
Before you Flame it is capable of running other formats but because MS use VC-1 Sony will not Vc1 is the better option for HD,
blue ray being faster than HD-DVD who said that as well sony >? hehehe.
LET THE GAMES Begin

@ dasgooch -- you may notice I also left them off of the Blu-ray list. In my eyes, both having something is equivalent to neither, as it eliminates a competitive edge. Thanks for trying to spin it against us, though!
dasgooch @ Oct 11th 2006 4:36PM
My appologies, I was doing two things at once while I was reading the article. I did state though that Warner is supporting BluRay. The issue still stands though that you did not include New Line and they are HD-DVD only.
Frosty22 @ Oct 11th 2006 5:28PM
Wow. Apple supports BluRay. That means nothing. They don't contribute to the success of BluRay. Whats that you say... that bluray is a better medium to backup data?? Well... considering you can get an external terabyte harddrive for less than a bluray drive, I'd say who cares.
Adam @ Oct 11th 2006 5:37PM
I think the bigger picture is that Microsoft supports HD-DVD. That means a heck of a lot more than Apple, Disney, and Sony supporting Blu-ray.
MoDo @ Oct 11th 2006 5:38PM
Why are people coming to a PS3 site, and being surprised PS3 news is being posted on it? This IS "PS3" fanboy. Also PS3fanboy posts plenty of the bad news about PS3, check the archives for the past 5-6 months and you'll see an equal, or maybe greater number of negative press. PS3fanboy is probably the most unbiased of all the joystiq "fanboy" sites.
And my opinion on BR and HDDVD....people will not upgrade right away. People who buy a PS3 will be buying it for gaming, and since BR is included, they will most likely experiment with BR....but probably still stick with DVD until prices go down.
HDDVD on the other hand requires a $250-ish peripheral. People won't spend that just to watch movies on their 360. I bet alot of PS3 owners wouldn't want to spend the extra $300-ish on a BR player in PS3....BUT PS3 doesn't offer the choice, so you have to get it.
Because you HAVE to get a BR player with PS3 and you DON'T have to for 360...alot of people will have BR players (Not by choice) and will experiment....whereas only hardcore HDDVD supporters will be willing to go out of their way to buy an HDDVD player.
because of PS3's strategy....alot of people who didn't intend on upgrading away from DVD will have a BR player. DVD's will still own the market...but their will be alot more BR players in homes than HDDVD players......
lionzub @ Oct 11th 2006 6:31PM
I said it before, and I'll say it again. The winner will be decided only by which format the porn industry uses.
MoDo @ Oct 11th 2006 6:42PM
I don't beleive the porn industry will even support HDDVD or Bluray, since DVD can suffice. I mean it's not like people are saying: "Geez, I wish I could watch porn in full HD"
Also porn movies aren't very long, and don't exactly have tons of extra footage....Porn industry will continue to use DVD for a long time.....and by then BR might even be alot cheaper than now, and the only reason the porn industry wouldn't support bluray would be the price....(Since they supported VHS over betamax due to price.)
But this time around, with the internet, people have alot more information at their fingertips on HDDVD and BR....in the VHS vs Betamax wars, people really didn't know much about anything, other than VHS had a wider support.
stumpie @ Oct 11th 2006 6:41PM
Unfortunately for Blu-Ray 6 Million PS3's sold does not mean 6 million people with HDTVs that are purchasing Blu-Ray media.
On the other hand...Everyone that purchases and Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on indeed does own an HDTV and will be an active purchaser of HD-DVD media.
Tom @ Oct 11th 2006 7:00PM
"If Sony can meet it's 6 million sale quota by mid-2007"
It'll be one of the greatest ripoffs in the history of video games. BTW, I own a PS2 and a PSP.
pkilla @ Oct 11th 2006 8:19PM
WTF #14
How can it be a ripoff? Blueray players are $1000 and HD-DVD players are $500 so getting a ps3 for $500 is not a ripoff. No one is forcing you to buy the ps3, but if you do you also get a blue ray player. I never understand why people get so mad over added features. If you dont want the blue ray then dont buy the ps3 damn. In your hearts you want the ps3, give ot a couple of years and all this talk wont matter.
Tom @ Oct 11th 2006 9:42PM
@pkilla
You're right, no one is forcing me to buy a PS3. I'm merely expressing the pity I feel for those of you who are. Bluray bring absolutely nothing to the PS3 that couldn't be done with DVD9. You see, Microsoft, unlike Sony, is primarily a software company, and as such they've spent a lifetime designing advance compression technologies that pack 25GB of data (like you will have with Bluray) into a tiny 8.5GB DVD. Sony lacks the resources to create such technoligies and so must rely on ever-increasing disc capacities. Same goes with HD-DVD. As Knoxin already pointed out above, Sony isn't willing to pay Microsoft for the rights to use VC1, so Bluray is going to be stuck with Mpeg2, and inferior compression that looks like crap compared to HD-DVD's VC1.
ozymandias @ Oct 11th 2006 9:42PM
I don't beleive the porn industry will even support HDDVD or Bluray, since DVD can suffice. I mean it's not like people are saying: "Geez, I wish I could watch porn in full HD"
actually they support blu ray. not because of geat storage space or crisper picture, but because the ps3 supports blu ray. this gives blu ray a large young crowd to market smut to.
I think blu ray is too expensive for most consumers. The only way blu ray could come out on top is if they A.lower the price a bit (not much but less than $1000)
B.have a MUCH larger movie selection than its compition, because aladdin and cars probably wont sway people one way or the other.(spiderman 2 & 3 might)

Do you really understand what you are saying? Are you honestly suggesting that MS can compress 25GB of binary data into 8.5GB without losing data? This is why Blu-Ray on the PS3 is useful. Games for PCs are already starting to come on multiple 8.5GB DVDs. On top of the size, data transfer is faster on Blu-Ray than on DVD.
If you are only refering to VC1 as compared to MPEG2 then please go read some more information. The first movies for Blu-Ray did come encoded in MPEG because the mastering software that Sony provided did not support other codecs at the time. That software has been updated and now supports VC1 and H.264. The people mastering the discs get to decide the codec used. Warner Brothers are now encoding all their Blu-Ray movies in VC1.
One last thing. You seem to forget about BD50 which provides 50GB of storage instead of 25GB. Movies are now shipping on those discs now and you can expect that if needed in 5 years so will PS3 games.
asdf @ Oct 12th 2006 1:10AM
@17, are you honestly retarded. PC games were never on DVDs (Maybe Collector's edition where they would have a DVD movie or something). I'm pretty sure you meant CDs (for data) which is 700 MB each. Why, because, not all computers have DVD-Roms. Could you be so kind and tell me which PC games require multiple DVD9's...... or even name a game that exceeded 10 GB. MY WHOLE STEAM FOLDER IS 8 GB ROFL. Just saying that makes you look stupid. Please don't talk.
About 50GB, you seem to forget that current games only need 5 GB tops. If you expect developers to fill up 50GB of space than that would mean 10x more time to develop, 10x the price because of the time and effort. This whole drama with resistance already taking up 25GB is completely bullshit. I can't emphasize this enough, but it's done for MARKETING. They need to JUSTIFY bluray in the PS3s. (and they need BR cause their asses are being handed to them by MS - MS really did pull their act together this time. Face it guys.)Or maybe its 20 GB because, they left everything uncompressed on purpose to make people feel better inside that PS3 games are Soooo good that need so much space and that DVD9 would never be able to achieve that. Apparently it is working, because your little ass is defending them.
Let's talk about add-ons. 80% of you will get a PS3 and never come near the whole movies on BR. Why, because you guys are nerds, you have no lives and don't watch movies. I love it how people compare PS3 to Xbox 360 + HD-DVD. I can get an Xbox 360 with HD DVD or a PS3 which have same features for $600. Or i can get a Xbox 360 for $399 or a PS3 without a BR (oh wait) for $600. So you see what I mean my fellow retards.
In 5 years, Xbox 3 will be out and PS3 will be obsolete because your supporting someone who is pro 10 year cycle.
30 GB is sufficient enough for a 3 hour full 1080p movie. Unless you expect SONY PIctures to shoot extra 2 hours for each movie because they got space left over on the BR. Rofl.
VC1 - Only one thing I will agree with you on #17 is that BR at first was horrible because SONY doesn't know shit about software (MPEG2 lawls). Since MS was nice enough to let them use VC1 tech, Now they are about even in quality/price.
Ok its late, gg. bedtime

Dude I can tell that you are only accustomed to the small clips that you can download off a p2p network. Believe it or not a lot of Porn movies, especially from Vivid and Wicked films, actually put a lot of money towards production.
A porn movie called Pirates actually was released in the last year or so, and it had a budget of $1 Million dollars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_%28Porn_Film%29
The porn industry has been known to use Blu-Ray and HD-DVD... but only in a select few titles. I know there are a lot of HD-DVD ones. So if all the production companies choose one standard, then that one will win.
VHS and Betamax... VHS won because the porn industry choose VHS. However it can be argued that Betamax did just as well if not better because in the professional broadcast video industry, it became standard.
DocEvil @ Oct 12th 2006 4:51PM
Just wanted to point out that Sony owns MGM. Putting Sony and MGM on the same list is like putting Sony down twice.
Darko @ Oct 21st 2006 7:43AM
Sorry but it's not the companys supporting it. Its the name. No one knows what the heck a Blu Ray is. Trust me I work in retail. If you have ever worked in retail. You find out how many Stupid people there are in the world. I know it might sound dumb. But it's true. Besides unless they can make the Blu-ray not take 1 min to just start watching a movie.
