GPS sells out in Japan

Japan is certainly excited for the new GPS peripheral. amazon.co.jp is reporting that its first shipment for the device is already sold out. The customers that are buying the tool are also buying Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, most likely because the Kojima stealth game happens to support the device. They're also picking up Chotto Shot (the PSP camera), because as you know, once you start buying peripherals for a system, you want to buy them all. The hardcore Japanese PSP fans appreciate the PSP's Swiss Army knife-like functionality... how about you? Will you be picking up the GPS system when it comes out?

I wont be picking up the Camera, but I might consider the GPS system, if it works well and its at the right price. Could come in very handy.

I probably wont pick up the GPS system but i probably pick up the camera if it works good and has a good price. Can be very useful.

Well, if there'll be a navigation system for German for the GPS, I will DEFINITELY pick it up.
But I fear that it'll be released as soon as 2010...

It's a GPS! Global Positioning type stuff. It's what some people use in their cars as onboard navigation. It gets your global position via satellite.
Some games will take advantage of the GPS like MGS:PO, which will allow you to locate other players of MGS:PO nearby by using the GPS peripheral.
And in Japan, the GPS unit unlocks a mode in Hot Shots Golf, that will serve as a complete map and guide of the golf course you're on IRL.
Other than that, I assume some traditional GPS software will become available that will allow you to use it as a navigational device.

I can't quite understand the demand, here. These capabilities don't seem particularly mainstream, and they certainly won't fair as well as their specialized counterparts (or possible even some of the new cameraphones). There'll be some demand, but we largely aren't a country with the same Wi-Fi access and confusing roads as some parts of Japan, so it doesn't retain the same utility.
I'm more looking forward to the announced keyboard and mouse technology, since that should add to the multimedia capabilities. The PSP doesn't really need gimick games that require you to purchase an add-on just to play.

I can't believe nobody has realised what the exciting thing about the GPS peripheral is.
It will turn your PSP into a Sat-Nav system such as TomTom
What does this mean? Well basically for about £40 you could buy a PSP cradle with charger to stick in your car, and the GPS accessory.
I don't know how much the Sat-Nav software is going to be, but I expect it will be reasonable and you can update your maps by downloading them through the PSP website or something like that.
All the "play other players in your area" is only secondary stuff where games developers want to play with something new.
The actual point of the GPS is to turn your PSP into a sat nav, a damn site cheaper than going out and buying a sat-nav unit.
Stop all the anti fanboy comments and discuss things with some sort of sense please, it makes reading comments here shite otherwise

#10 What does wifi access have to do with the GPS add-on? And what does "confusing roads" have to do with using a GPS? You never use mapquest or any online program to give you directions to get somewhere? If you know how to get to every destination anywhere in America then sure the GPS is definitely is a waste...
