PS3 unboxing

Our good friends over at IGN have received their PS3 review unit and have documented the unboxing! With all of those cables, it's a shame that they couldn't throw in HDMI (though there may be one in the pic above... but this is likely for IGN to be able to review PS3 games at 1080p). Also thrown in the box are several recent game builds for Resistance, Genji, MotorStorm and Lair. Lair? Is that one coming out sooner than we think?
You can view the full step-by-step ceremony over at IGN. And don't worry, I'm sure PS3 Fanboy's review unit is on the way.

IGN recieved what appears to be burnt copies of the games...does this mean....the ps3 will be able to read Verbatim BD-Rs???? This would be extremely intresting...
dudeugotnochanceinhell @ Oct 24th 2006 10:49PM
just like it reads burned cdrs bra.

Hey MoneyShot.. Check out the first pic in their gallery.. The box has a black sticker which states "PROTOTYPE - NOT FOR SALE"
So I would guess that most likely retail units wont read games off of BD-R's, Sony has already stated that the unit will indeed read BD-R's as far as home movies go..

Seems like the PS3 won't be fingerprint-free, as in one of the first pics, someone was already brushing it off with his shirt

No HDMI? So what?
A humble A/V cable? WTF?

nintendo fanboy that I am, I now want a PS3 and Wii. seeing the real thing there reminds me how much I love my PS2 and all of the Tony Hawk games. A few GTA's and a MGS and it'll all be worth it. The price still makes me a little resistant, but maybe when it hits the $399 mark or I can grab a greatest hits game.

What is the 5th cable? I see USB for controller, AV, power, and ethernet

It didn't come in a retail box so it is obviously a Test/Debug kit --- no, retail PS3s won't be able to handle burnt discs.

Work at any bigger gamingsites/magazines and you will recieve gaming systems that can read imported/burned/betas.
Hurlman @ Oct 25th 2006 4:30PM
Hate to break it to you but that is probably the exact same PS3 for sale in stores soon. Only exception might be the bios or firmware (whichever handles the reading of burned discs im sure). So it will probably read burned discs but if it reads burned games then someone was asleep at the wheel.
mingistech @ Oct 25th 2006 4:59PM
Were they told not to photograph the front of the system? Why the hell are all the pics of it's ugly backside?

Basically any website or magazine that reviews video games receive special consoles from the manufacturers (not sure the details of how that works but I’m sure nick knows) anyway the review console is in general technically identical to a retail kit (although Xbox 360 review kits are black) except for the fact that it has a different bios that allows it to play -r's as publications need to start the review process before the game has started to be mass produced and depending on the length of the game before it has even gone gold, and so sometimes a feature that was in the review copy wont appear in the retail copy but that’s a totally different topic.

Ok, call me dumb, but what is with the same old crappy controller that breaks all the time? Are you telling me that we aren't getting that cool one that's shown at the top of this page? Lemme guess, we have to pay extra for a controller that will feel cool and work for more than 12 hours?

If I recall correctly, the original PS2 could not read DVD-RWs or DVD+Rs, yet there was an updated version sold that had a much quieter fan as well as support for the additional formats. DVD-R is identical to the machine as an imprinted DVD. (I believe the updated version had a yellow-colored corner on the box with a black plus sign, this was before the release of the slimline ps2)

#5 well it could be simply that it either wont be fingerprint free...or it could be that packaging stuff...though it's like a fabric for backaging there have been many times some of the particles have came loose and stuck to electronics I have bought....
And I doubt that someones purchasing decision relies if finger prints can be left on it's surface....

I particularly love that picture where they put the controllers, discs, etc. in the front to make the PS3 look
smaller than what it is.
Here is a comment on 4 colors rebellion's website on the ps3:
...It looks like the byproduct of an old answering machine mating with a Foreman grill, and then being beaten with a stick for being so ugly...
:But I mos' def' like the shininess...
whoah....shiny...
