MPEG-4 SP is the same one from PSP.
MPEG-4 AVC is the another one too which it is on firmware 2+ PSP.
Not sure it can play on AVI format
Hoopster @ Oct 27th 2006 10:13AM
Does it do 8cm discs?
stumpie @ Oct 27th 2006 10:15AM
hmm...no VC1? I thought that was a required codec for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
No .WMA or WMV. That will be interesting browsing the web looking to play a video as most videos on the web are in .WMV .
I guess folks also can't login to any subscription service via the browser and stream or play songs as Itunes DRM is not supported and neither is .WMA Plays For Sure.
I wander if you will be able to download using the web browser?
No DIVX or XVID support.

"hmm...no VC1? I thought that was a required codec for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD"
It plays VC1 fine off the BD disc, it wont play VC1 off the HDD... for now anyways, they can always enable it via firmware.
If you want to do the rest of that stuff; use the Linux OS.
Andir2.0 @ Oct 27th 2006 10:30AM
I could give a rat's ass for PlaysForSure. If I do extract MP3s, I don't use media player. Even Microsoft's Zune doesn't play PlaysForSure content, which only tells me that MS could give a rat's ass as well.
Frosty22 @ Oct 27th 2006 10:42AM
I'm shocked that it doesn't support Betamax.
JJ @ Oct 27th 2006 11:23AM
Funny Frosty...maybe PS3/360/Wii should support VHS as well eh?
Come on that format war was what? 20 years ago? I know people liken HDDVDBluray to VHS/Betamax... but come on.. sony has had plenty of successful formats as well, there's always gonna be hits and misses, Ninty and MS aren't exactly immune to failed formats, systems either ya know.

i still dont get why people are hating. too many haters in this biznatch with all that betamax shit talk. everyone is acting as if sony had molested them when they were little and now they are tormented and siding with the uber cool j allard xbox bandwagon.
iceatcs @ Oct 27th 2006 11:43AM
Cos they are full of jealous.
All the haters are only main one reason, is the price.

Just to shed some light on the video formats since the own blogger admints not knowing what some of this formats are:
MPEG-1 - This is what you get on video cd's although this doesn't necesarily mean that it will play video cds (VCD), however, .MPG you get on the internet will mostly work.
MPEG-2 (PS,TS) - This refers to files that are usually ripped from DVD's if it is a PS, it will most probably be in MPV or MP2 format, the TS is how video files are tipycally stored on DVD's so if you rip a DVD and put it on the PS3 HDD (removing the protection most likely be required) and play a DVD image.
H.264/MEPG-4 AVC - Recent codec, works very well and has great compression quality.
MPEG-4 SP - Very similar to H.264 only older works very well.

"6. I'm shocked that it doesn't support Betamax."
Hey Frosty22. Do you even know why beta failed? I bet you don't.
People like you that use the betamax argument against BD-ROM are the same people that used the argument that the Apple iPod will fail because Apple's Newton PDA failed.
Silly boy!

"Even Microsoft's Zune doesn't play PlaysForSure"
Your right the Zune doesn't ... but the Xbox 360 does. It's a nice feature...you can plug in any Plays For Sure MP3 player and the 360 will play all of the files...even the DRMed versions like files from subsription services. And I'm sure the 360 will be able to play files from any Zune plugged in as well.
Carlos @ Oct 27th 2006 3:44PM
Doesn't the fact that it come with linux mean that it will play any video you currently have on your cpu?
bruce @ Oct 27th 2006 5:42PM
can i listen to custom music while playin a game or internet surfing?
Elric @ Oct 28th 2006 6:52PM
If I didn't already have a Super Audio Player, I would seriously concider this for that alone!
