SEGA growing stronger by the day -- where's the SEGA Phoenix?
Thanks to, I have confirmed, ozymandias for offering the name Phoenix for the next SEGA console (if ever there will be one). With the release of Phantasy Star Universe, SEGA will begin to bask in the warming shower of money as people slowly empty their pockets into the MMOARPG (yes, it's an action-RPG, not an RPG... if you need clarification, comment away). In addition to this, SEGA is seeking two or three more in-house development teams. That's right -- the deals with UK studios like Sports Interactive and Creative Assembly weren't enough and SEGA wants more and more. European head Mike Hayes said of this search, "From a marketing and mobile point of view we likewise need to have enough to service a pan-European company of Sega's target size. This is so we're fully operational and toe-to-toe with the likes of Ubisoft, Activision and THQ." All right, so they're staying away from hardware, but we can dream, right? It would be nice to see a Sony vs. SEGA rivalry at least one more time. If the PS3 went head-to-head with the "Phoenix" in, oh, 2008, who would you throw your support behind?

I would definitely go for the Sega Pheonix, after all that's the only reason I'm visiting a PS3 fanboy site.

if Sega going to get back into Console wars they should not bother right now. they should wait to release the new console next next gen time. so where they actually have a chance this time....

I would envisage SEGA staying out of the consumer games console market, but if they did have involvement, I would say they'd team up with one of the big 3.
And the historic rivalry was always bigger between SEGA and Nintendo, as opposed to SEGA and Sony.

@ TheGuyNextDoor -- you're very right. It was always heated between SEGA and Nintendo, but how neat would it be for SEGA to slap Sony in revenge for the PS2 destroying the Dreamcast? That's what I was getting at.

@ndoerr
That's odd, you replied before I had confirmed my comment.... lol
I get what you mean though. Although can you really say that it was the Playstation that destroyed the Dreamcast? I'd say people voted with their wallets. And the Playstation wasn't the only other console on the market at the time either.
On the up-side I rather liked the Dreamcast, and it seems to have gained cult status, which is cool. Unlike things like the Atari Jaguar for example, which didn't stop Atari clinging on for dear life in the software sector until it got absorbed into Infrogrames.

Sony should build up a massive force and encourage Sega to come back into the console war, that will take all the bad press and bad pressure off of Sony as there is more competition, that would be amazing, all 4 consoles going head to head.

ps2 didnt kill dreamcast, sega killed itself with saturn, and dreamcast was just their last attempt at making a recovery. it was a good last effort but it wasnt good enough to make up for the travesty that saturn was.

Sega. Just to spite Sony.
Ahem...I mean....someone has to take Sony's place.

Myself like many others are thinking that one of the big 3 will bow out this gen. All have reasons to do so:
MS - so much cash outlay, very little if no return.
Nin - the wii flavor will die quickly. expecting GC sales. Just stick to handhelds.
Sony - No money, management problems.
I think SEGA probably have plans for a new console on the drawing board but will only move forward if one of these 3 withdrew. 3 consoles is all the industry can really handle.

lol, you used my proposed name for the next gen sega console.

@ ozymandias -- hahaha! Wouldn't you know it. It sounds amateur, but I couldn't find that post in the archives. Probably glanced over it both times. Anywho, creds getting changed to your name. Sorry for the confusion!

Sega = Good times, original concepts, bright colors, quirky games
(specially after the DreamCast legacy)
as simple as that.
I miss you more than you can think, Sega!
