London gives their review of the PS3
It's the battle of the London newspapers battling over the battle of the next-gen consoles battling for the monopolization of your wallet! That's a ton of fighting. Anyway, let's talk about the positive news first -- the London Evening Standard dedicated an entire page to the next-gen console war and awarded its top marks to the PS3. The heading of the article should be leading towards the content found therein: "World-beating PS3 well worth the wait". Yeah. What did they say about it? Another quote: "The first thing that hits you is the quality of the graphics. They are incredibly detailed and fast, noticeably more so than Microsoft's Xbox 360, and often tough to distinguish from video." As for game reviews, Motorstorm got five stars, while Resistance and Ridge Racer 7 both got four stars. The Guardian (another London paper) took a completely different stance. Let's listen in... "The launch games we've played do look impressive, especially when viewed on a high-definition TV, but there is nothing on display that Microsoft's competing Xbox 360 couldn't produce. In fact, upcoming Xbox 360 titles such as Gears of War offer superior graphics to anything we've seen so far on PS3." Now, we're going to agree. Gears of War does look incredible. But... it's been in the works for a long, long, long time -- so it ought to blow everything else away. Does that mean that in a year the PS3 will have something that makes Gears of War look like a drooling Atari 2600? Doubtful, but it's most certainly a noble goal. Which newspaper will you guys side with? Because it completely matters.

Interesting factoid:
The Evening Standard has a slightly higher daily circulation than the Guardian. ~425,000 daily compared to ~375,000 daily.
In my opinion... the fact that the media is split on 360 and ps3 outlines that these machines are pretty even on the battleground.

Interesting...I've never posted here before, but couldn't pass this up.....how can they review MotorStorm, when it isn't finished, and currently it isn't scheduled for release until sometime in March of 2007?

gears was on a 2 year development cycle, and it looked that good when we saw it at e3 2005. but gears is special and definatly not the norm. i expect the next unreal tournment for the ps3 to look as impressive as gears, because the games will have the same art director.

I agree it comes down to personal preference at this point, which system has the games you want to play. God of War, Final Fantasy, Motorstorm go for the PS3. Gears of War, Too Human and Halo? Go for the xbox 360.

But you can't say that frosty!
Haha like Doerr's last lines.

Just a slight flaw in the whole London gives their review thing... The Guardian is an English paper based in Manchester. I believe there may be more than one city in England you know ;)

@ thelongwait -- hahaha, you're right. There probably is more than one city in England. Consider it my American ignorance. I've never had the opportunity to leave this country and see the world (yet), so I guess I still tend to lump all things "England" into "London". Upon further research though, you are utterly and completely right. Good call.

does Gears of War seriously have better graphics then anything seen on ps3??? i dont want halo 3 to have better graphics then any ps3 game, who knows how many yrs that game has been in development for. what i want is for sony to have better online and better graphics then the xbox360.

The guardian is considered a more reputable publication than the Standard. But frankly I generally find them both to be poor especially when it comes to tech stories.

Gears of War does indeed look far better than any of the upcoming PS3 games. This may change in the future, but for now it really is the best looking game ever made.

Do you think Resistance hasn't been in the works for a long long time too? I doubt it.
