You probably recall David's article about the PS3
manual's instructions to replace the HDD of the PS3 and the SIXAXIS battery. How about some non-book-y visual aid? Now, pay no attention to the young girl giving you the blowfish face. Scroll down, past the question marks... yeah. See that shiny PS3? It's pretty swanky. Now, let's rip that hard drive out... there. Easy enough. Nothing really remarkable, but the last picture is pretty worthy of a thoughtful beard stroke. What's that on the screen? Seems someone was able to do the swap, as per prescribed in the manual. Hopefully, couple this with the instructions in the manual and you will know how to do this surgery without ever doing it. Does that make sense? Whatever. Enjoy the mod-fest, oh downloaders of multiple bits of media that take up a lot of hard drive space.

It looks pretty easy. So there isn't any required software on the HDD? does the PS3 format the drive as well?

Yeah, as soon as the PS3 boots up and detects a new HD, it asks you if you want to format it. The one screen with all Japanese text and question mark is supposed to say that, but unless you can read it, you'll have to wait until someone posts the prompt in english...
