Latest PS3 ad hits the Interweb
So far, Sony's PS3 campaign has been anything but normal. Wierd visuals. Unsual metaphors, Strange homages to old sci-fi movies. And the latest PS3 super-ad is no different. It's a bit unusual. But -- finally! -- Sony has included actual gameplay footage... and.that's a step in the right direction. The next step would be to actually get units into people's hands.

Yeah, this one really is the best thus far.
Matthew @ Nov 16th 2006 7:44PM
This is actually a commercial for the PS3. It's the video from www.playb3yond.com, so i guess it's advertising, but not a commercial.
Matthew @ Nov 16th 2006 7:47PM
Woops i meant it actually *isn't* a commercial for the PS3.
Ed @ Nov 16th 2006 7:52PM
Nope, it's not a commercial. It's part of Sony's overall PS3 advertising campaign.
Sonic @ Nov 16th 2006 10:00PM
Nothing to do with the topic at hand, but why does this site still have the Boomerang controller at the top.
Ghost @ Nov 16th 2006 8:17PM
This should SOOOOO be on prime time TV.
Jason @ Nov 16th 2006 9:24PM
It was on tv, I have seen it 3 times. That makes it a commercial.
jasonb @ Nov 16th 2006 9:45PM
Well there's mis-information if I've ever heard it. Who cares if you can store 50gigs if you've got one company to put out your movies, and COD2 & 3 look like a raped ass on your console?
I used to be a ps fanboy, but man did they fuck this one up.

Sony's advert strategy so far has been one that stresses style over substance. I've seen rotating rubix cubes explode into color floor panels, a baby doll that laughs like a sinister demon while crying (in reverse!), and a six axis controller that turns a dozen eggs into a flock of Resident Evil-like ravens. No where did I see any real display of the graphical prowess of the machine (thats if you don’t count the microscopic video projected from the baby's eyes).
If anything, the PS3 commercials have spurred plenty of on-going conversation and debate among gamers; the most famous one liner being "What the hell was that?!" Sony has managed to produce some entertaining albeit senseless commercials that aim to raise awareness about the product rather than inform. So far I've seen nothing "beyond" from Sony that is worth playing. Lately, I've had my eyes set on Microsoft and Nintendo, mainly because of their software offerings. Picking up Gears of War on the Xbox 360 is a no brainer. The game truly looks next gen and plays like it as well. And what can I say about the Wii? Its got the Legend of Zelda. Enough said.
Sony had better start working on their killer app and producing commercials that show off their hardware in a better light. Oh and by the way, the game that was showed in this commercial is "Genji." Have you read the reviews on this shoddy piece of trash? The graphics are nice, that much is true. But it still has a ridiculous camera system that was ripped right out of the PS1 era and it has the same, tired, hack n' slash gameplay that was popular when Dynasty Warriors first entered the PS2 realm. Here's a word of advice Sony, if you're going to advertise the PS3 on television (or you tube or wherever people watch things move on a screen), at least use footage from a game that garners decent ratings from us journalists. Put your best foot forward before you're forced to shove it in your mouth.

wow, really well made.
the thing about the obscurity in the commercials is that they cannot get people too hyped for it since its coming in limited quantities. but they have to make it intriguing enough to make u want it later on. but this commercial was very well made.

@7 - One company makes Blu-Ray movies? Boy, are you misinformed. There are currently more companies backing Blu-Ray than HD-DVD, so get your facts straight before talking crap.
I liked this advertisement best of all of them, even if he did say "1080pi." The voice sounds like Lance Henriksen, and I think Lance is cool.
I'll be buying a PS3 just as soon as they stop scalping every last one of them on eBay for $8,000. Bastards.
bryan @ Nov 17th 2006 9:28AM
I must say, that really impressed me. Still waiting for the thing to drop in price :P
FSK405K @ Nov 17th 2006 11:56AM
Thank you Sony for spending money to drive up EBay prices instead of to manufacture more PS3's.
jasonb @ Nov 17th 2006 12:07PM
11.
So tell me, what other motion pictures are putting out blu-ray discs other than sony? I wasn't talking manufacturing. I was talking Motion Pictures. Sorry.

For supporting companies...when Sony says "We have access to 50% of the movies ever created in color" its no bullshit

This has nothing to do with this article, but I got a chance to play a ps3 demo yesterday, and the graphics were super-duper.
SuicideNinja @ Nov 17th 2006 2:22PM
Yay, more prerenders. Of course a prerender is going to look "amazing". No console maker is innocent from this. They should be slapped.
jasonb @ Nov 17th 2006 3:07PM
And of those people, they've got 3 that actually put out films. Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney, and Warner Bros.
Yeah man, you've got all the sony pictures too! So here's a sample of movies you'll have to chose from- Talladega Nights and The Little Mermaid.
I've been to best buy and seen the Blu-Ray section. It is a sad selection at best compared to what is to come with HD-DVD.
If I had things my way, blu-ray would win, but let's face the facts, the masses know what DVD's are and they sure know what HD stands for by now. No one gives a shit that this console plays blu-ray except for blu-ray fans, and the games I've seen don't look anywhere near as good as the 360.
TheDude @ Nov 17th 2006 3:44PM
Some fanboys you are! zero updates on launch day? no overnight coverage of the lines? no hands on reports? no play by plays?
weak.
Joe Smith @ Nov 17th 2006 5:19PM
That one is a little bland and long. I did, however, see a nice Resistance Fall of Man ad last night on Comedy Central. Same white room and PS3 setup then the game bursts through the rear wall. Made the game look pretty good.
Still not sure why the poor PS3 has to sit all alone in a big white room though...
The_Boo @ Nov 17th 2006 6:56PM
Wow, what a way to lie. Either that or they used fuzzy math. NTSC TVs (your basic standard american television, which I'm sure they are referring to) have a resolution of 720 x 480. 1080p hdtv has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 if you do the math the picture resolution is only six times higher, where do the other 4x come from? Are they including color depth, cause that has nothing to do with resolution.
The_Boo @ Nov 17th 2006 7:01PM
oh wqait I'm sorry he said quality, so the fuzzy math is OK because it's very hard to quantify quality. He could have said "100 times" but people would think that was an exageration. Also aren't all of the current Blu-Ray discs 25G? Aren't there issues with the 50G disc at the moment? Saying your disc holds twice the info of HD-DVD when you can't get it out on the street doesn't really count does it?
Triforceowner @ Nov 18th 2006 1:07PM
This must be the best PS3 commercial yet, not saying much, but it is drastically better than the other commercials with all the false info in them.
