3.0 manual online; confirms PS3 necessary for downloadable games!
Our reader Matt T. sent in a very hot tip. It appears that the online manual for PSP version 3.0 is up and running. Thankfully, it doesn't have any features removed. However, it confirms our fears that a PS3 is necessary to download games to the PSP. Here's the proof:"Play PLAYSTATION®Network titles downloaded from (PLAYSTATION®Store). A PLAYSTATION®3 system is required to use this feature."
What??? Didn't Peter Dille confirm that you didn't need a PS3 to download games to the system? Sony's got a lot of explaining to do...

Wow... if this is actually the case ebay will have another PSP up for sale.
beavis @ Nov 20th 2006 5:44PM
Ah sony... just when you think they are finally doing something right, they find a way to #%#%@#$% it up.
JohnIV @ Nov 20th 2006 6:01PM
way to shit on loyal PSP owners, Sony.
some of us don't give a shit about the PS3. not sure if Sony realizes this.
xorzisten @ Nov 20th 2006 6:18PM
This smells like some corporate wize guy decided too give PSP owners an extra reason too buy a PS3 and vice versa. I cant think of any technical limitations that would a PS3 required.
This a major screw-up and PR blunder especially after promising us the opposit.
Hector Martinez @ Nov 20th 2006 6:27PM
He didn't say WHEN the PSP download service would be available, only that it will happen. Sheesh. With so many great PSP games out right now, playing PS1 downloads is low on my priority list now, especially since it'll require upgrading.
Saffie @ Nov 20th 2006 6:28PM
This sucks. Although I'm one of the few who has a PS3. Even w/ the PS3 I cannot go online, because we dont connection at home.
page @ Nov 20th 2006 6:34PM
Hopefully they will implement the ability to download games via the PSP once they realize a lot of PSP users simply don't want a non-portable game platform (PS3).
Bored @ Nov 20th 2006 7:08PM
No need to panic.
Note that the feature uses the PSP in USB mode, just like downloading through a PC would.
Take a good look at the PSP Store (www.yourpsp.com).
It has all the needed functionality for selling content, except that up to this day, everything they have available for download has been free of charge. That is where they will likely release PS1 games.
desistyle @ Nov 20th 2006 7:29PM
That blows! I just picked up a PSP and was looking forward to this service! On a diff note, anyone know where to get some cheap memory stick duo's? How much space can we expect PS1 games to take up?
El Payo @ Nov 20th 2006 8:03PM
Wow. Sony continues to shoot themselves in the head, reload the gun and then shoot themselves again.
ninja @ Nov 20th 2006 8:04PM
This is a mistake. Sony won't be able to maintain this for long. Logically, there are 2 obvious reasons for this move:
1. Sony is trying to push PS3 sales.
2. PSP download functionality is not ready.
I was very disappointed myself when I first caught wind of this, well after I purchased my second PSP (yes, I own 2). Having to buy a PS3 just for the download service, to me, is ridiculous.
Either Sony is still working out a way for the PSP to directly download games or maybe the kiosks are the alternative answer to buying a PS3. Or maybe Sony is just being greedy...
Salesmunn @ Nov 20th 2006 8:19PM
Hey guys, PSM thinks otherwise.

wow sony...just wow. good job
Jose Godinez @ Nov 20th 2006 9:27PM
I think this is bogus. Playstation's website is a ".com" site, and not a ".net" one. I don't remember anywhere in the Playstation 3 manual that refers to the PS3 as a "PS3" as does this official "manual". Just my opinion.
Claudius @ Nov 20th 2006 9:42PM
It does smell fishy, the Playstation.net thing. I tried loading the www.playstation.net and guess what, no deal. However, I tried doing a whois, and this is what I got:
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Akasaka 7-1-1 Aoyamayasuda Bldg.
Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-0052
Japan
phone : 03-5215-9751 fax : 03-3234-6915
Anyway, if this is true, I'm incredibly disappointed. There's no way I'm getting a PS3, and even though it makes sense for Sony to control the use on different PSPs of the downloaded games (much like Apple and the iPod), I though they'd be smart enough as to allow us to download games through our computers. Even if it's through Windows :/
Maybe this is only temporary and Sony is still making a multiplataform interface (maybe for the PS3, the PSP, Windows and Mac).
Matt T. @ Nov 20th 2006 9:49PM
WOOT, I sent in the hot tip.
I am teh L33t ownage.
BTW, I would like to remind people.Sony could launch it on PS.com. and if they don't it will be on torrent within a .....week.
Matt T. @ Nov 20th 2006 9:55PM
Another reminder, It couold very well be on the download section of Sony's website also. Just they don't give directions.
Matt T. @ Nov 20th 2006 10:00PM
16 and 17, it is real. Very accurate and it has the Sony copy right at the bottom.Unless the makers are oreying to get their asses sued, I bet it is Sony
FingerTaint @ Nov 20th 2006 11:02PM
I just see it as paying for a 600 dollar router. It lessens the blow to my ego.
John @ Nov 21st 2006 12:57AM
Doesn't mean that millions of stores won't have the feature available to use, what's stopping ebgames from using the feature for its customers?
pixelator @ Nov 21st 2006 1:21AM
I sure hope they do eventually allow PS1 downloads directly... But in the meantime, I DO have a PS3, soooo ;p
user1183 @ Nov 21st 2006 1:35AM
BOOOOOOOOOOOOO !
Claudius @ Nov 21st 2006 2:23AM
Gah. If only Sony had something cool, like iTunes...
daniel-kun @ Nov 21st 2006 3:53AM
I can't express the hate I feel for Sony. They're like the pure evil, the anti-christ, the hard- and software-nazis. Eventually they'll be killed by outrageous customers like me, but chances are that they'll earn themselves some golden limbs with the "business" they're doing.
They better make PLAYSTATION-downloads available from my PSP, or....
Michael Anderson @ Nov 21st 2006 8:28AM
I think everyone here has it backwards - all of the statements talk about luring people to getting a PS3. Sony has already shown their arrogance regarding the console market, and that they place all eggs in that basket - heck, they have undervalued the PSP since the start! So while the PSP will get PC or direct downloads eventually, it will happen when it is seen as beneficial or convenient to the PS3.
Alien @ Nov 21st 2006 9:48AM
This is bad , but the PSP community will arrange it anyways , hurray for the black market :P
bobeotm @ Nov 21st 2006 3:51PM
I hope they allow the psp to download psone games without the ps3. I mean, we couldnt get a ps3 even if we wanted to. They are so scarce, you could have found Tu-Pac's killer before finding an in store PS3. If they know whats good for them, they will allow it to function outside of the PS3. Afterall, how many of the 200,000 folks with a PS3 actually have a psp in the first place? So if they ever want to make serious money off of this feature, its in their best interest to do something.
Brandon @ Nov 21st 2006 4:02PM
#1 Don't say they're trying to puch PS3 sales... they don't need to. It sells itself.
#2 People who are considerate AND own a PS3 will eventually find a way to make the games available for download to the general public. Possibly even for free. Don't worry
GOATNINJA420 @ Dec 23rd 2006 12:09PM
This just goes to show that you do not own anything you buy from Sony.
