Firmware 3.00 now available via Network Update

It's finally here. The Megaton firmware. THREE POINT ZERO ZERO. All you have to do is access Network Update and download the file. (As of this writing, the upgrade is not available on the US or Japanese PSP websites.)
This update includes the following changes:
- PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
- [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
- A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].
- 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
- [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
- [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].

Certificate Utility: used to authorize the PSP to play downloaded games, I assume.

Helps you use every feature of your PSP. Not bad.

Chotto Shot coming soon? Hope so.

Best part of 3.0? No more UMD game auto-loading. Yes!

First!!
pentapenguin @ Nov 20th 2006 11:24PM
1) I'm SO glad that no functionality was removed! I honestly was very scared that it was a real possibility.
2) Auto start of UMDs was one of my biggest little annoyances of the PSP. I'm sure glad they finally fixed it!
3) What's up with having to have a PS3 to download games?!? Despite the fact that nobody (almost) has one, what about the rest of us who just can't afford or want one? How are we supposed to get games if we aren't lucky enough to have a PS3 owning friend? This stinks big time since I was really looking forward to this feature and I was going to get a downloaded game or two.
7r1ck13 @ Nov 20th 2006 11:30PM

So I need to buy a PS3 to play PS1 games on my PSP? What the hell is Sony thinking?
Dustin @ Nov 21st 2006 12:02AM
Anybody know if you can take your PSP to a retailer and connect it to a PS3 kiosk (if they have one) and download games and stuff?
Spudgy @ Nov 21st 2006 12:03AM
It was stated in one of the interviews IIRC that the PS1 download would INITIALLY require a PS3, but that later on we would be able to download direct without the need for a PS3.
From reading around other sites it seems everyone has a short memory and is flying off the handle over this when it was always going to be this way.
Jay @ Nov 21st 2006 12:13AM
if i update my psp with a custom gameboot will it get messed up???
Dustin @ Nov 21st 2006 12:15AM
sorry. spur of the moment.
sully @ Nov 21st 2006 12:15AM
PS3 required for PS1 downloads. Son of a bitch!
ZENegade @ Nov 21st 2006 12:22AM
I'm fucking glad I didn't have to wait a month after the PS3 launch for this firmware update. I'm looking forward to turning the UMD auto-load off and the music visualizer on. Should be good times.
Edward @ Nov 21st 2006 12:24AM
What is this "Certificate Utility" under the Game menu?
Matt T. @ Nov 21st 2006 12:44AM
I ( a member of Sony's GAP) should be getting a PR response soon....I brief everyone when I get it.
Joe @ Nov 21st 2006 1:00AM
fuck that i aint updating. Atleast not until im sure that its cracked.
Ken @ Nov 21st 2006 1:08AM
I realize that I am horribly behind the times, but I finally got wifi hooked up and running this week and I am far too excited that I am able to use the Network Update for this one. Wow, it is so much more simple. It is like when you first switched to broadband and wondered how you ever got along without it.
I agree with the UMD autoload option. Can't wait to turn that off. I was using the old 0000 password trick.
michae2414 @ Nov 21st 2006 1:53AM
Updated to v3.00, and that visual player for music is nice. After a couple seconds, the battery/time indicator, progress bar, album art, etc. all fade away and the visualizer takes center stage. Hitting HOME or SELECT keeps the visualizer playing in the background (the 2nd and 5th visualizer options cause the XMB to lag, though).
Unfortunately, the music still stops when I hit X to go into the PHOTO category. :(
Anyone able to test out Remote Play now that it's functional on the PSP and PS3?
michae2414 @ Nov 21st 2006 1:55AM
Oh, and a note to what I mentioned above: If you leave the display option on - it's that "i" icon when you hit Triangle as a song is playing) - none of the GUI disappears. That explains why the display was on by default after the update (I never used that option).
Henry Phillips @ Nov 21st 2006 2:27AM
I tried out the remote play, the ps3 downscales it's video, then streams it wirelessly to the PSP using it's wireless net (you have to set it up as if it were a router), the audio goes too. It won't let you go to the PS3's game, settings, or users menu, but all the others are accessible. It won't go over the internet yet, so you need the 60Gig PS3 to do it right now. But sony has said that they intend to expand the feature to allow for games and to be able to do the feature over the internet instead of just directly.
Henry Phillips @ Nov 21st 2006 2:29AM
Oh yeah, also from the home button, you can PSEUDO-push the PS button and you can adjust the rate at which video is sent to you, slower rate is lag, faster rate requires a better connection.
Arnie @ Nov 21st 2006 2:54AM
pentapenguin
No doubt someone will do the transfer and upload them while we wait for direct access from the PSP
Darren Tilley @ Nov 21st 2006 3:38AM
One of my favorite features is the multi-step fast forward/rewind for audio. Anyone who uses their PSP for podcasts will know why this feature is completely essential. Glad to see Sony took notice. (Still would like the 'Go To' option like they have in video)
Anyone also notice in the Online manual, it goes into some of the camera's recording features. The videos recorded appear to be no longer restricted to 15 seconds like they are with the original camera software. They are limited only by the size of your card.
Benjamin @ Nov 21st 2006 4:27AM
SONY! ATTENTION!
OMG Sony please PLEASE give us the ability to multitask!!
The PSP can multitask, it is possible with the hardware, no?
I mean, currently we can look around the XMB while a song is playing, but we can't go into any sub-menus that require the loading of the memory stick or the UMD... it would be awesome if the PSP could play music while you surf on the internet or look at a picture slideshow!!!
calllus @ Nov 21st 2006 4:43AM
in the breakdown of 3.0 on psp-vault.com http://www.psp-vault.com/Article757.psp it says that it now supports avi video files has anyone tried this out yet? i am so sick of converting and keeping track of my MV7837849494????whateverfiles... could someone try droping a straight avi into the video folder?
johnlena @ Nov 21st 2006 8:01AM
HEY Benjamin IF U HAVE HOMEBREW YOU CAN LISTENT TO YOUR MUSIC AND SURF DA INTERNET.ALSO YOU CAN PLAY UR GAME AND LISTENT TO YOUR MUSIC AT DA SAME TIME.BUT I WASINT HERE FOR THIS.
Ok sony WTF u relly think ppl will buy da ps3 for 600 dollers.
And that u did da same thing as the locationFree player that you need to watch tv to your psp.Now you gonna make us pay $600 to download psp1 games.
Thanks god that i didnt update along time ago,now i can play homebrew,so it already has da ps1 games download and all these other stuff like u can play gba, sesn, netendo games, and etc.
but this is my opiean so if u want to upgrade and ur not runnin homebrew go for it, but i like da screen thing while playing ur music sony should make it that you could download more screeen saver that u wantthat would be nice.

A rough translation of the post by johnlena
Benjamin, I heard tell that if you use “home-brew” on your PSP you will be able to listen to you own choice of music whilst browsing the Internet and playing games. Please be aware I'm not trying to encourage you to do so.
Sony! Are we to believe you expect people to part with $600 of their hard earned currency for the PS3? To access the extra functionality we, the customer, are forced into buying additional hardware to implement the extra features. In order to watch TV we are expected to buy the location free player and now you make the same mistake again and force us to purchase the PS3 so we can play downloadable games!
This is unacceptable.
I give thanks to the lord that I was strong enough to resist updating the firmware. This decision has left me in the enviable position of being able to play any PS1 game title I wish to, as well as opening the door to games from other platforms, such as the GBA and so on.
Of course this is my personal opinion and if you find yourself not interested in the “home-brew” scene then by all means upgrade your firmware. I myself enjoy being able to play music whilst engaging in other activities. If only Sony would bend to my requirements then I might be interested in the firmware upgrade.
The future, for some at least, is not so bright.
Wayne @ Nov 21st 2006 9:23AM
The ability to set the RSS timer to a day of the week as well as the time would have been nice. I, as most I believe, use the RSS to get weekly pod casts and such that are published weekly so a daily timer is a waste of power.
PocketGoddess @ Nov 21st 2006 9:33AM
Has anyone downloaded the 3.0 firmware from this site? Is it exactly the same as I would get from Network Update, without any changes or creative programming?
I really want to update my PSP before I go home for Thanksiving, and don't have WiFi access to get it from Network Update.
I'm kinda leery of doing something to brick my PSP just before vacation, and have never downloaded anything from PSP Fanboy--though I love reading it!
Kspraydad @ Nov 21st 2006 10:23AM
@ Edward
What is this "Certificate Utility" under the Game menu?
That has to do with the DRM that Sony is applying to the downloads so that they can only be played on your unit or shared x number of times etc...
Kspraydad @ Nov 21st 2006 10:50AM
@CorporateWhore...
THANK YOU.
As someone over the age of 20 I didn't understand that post until you posted the clarification.
Thank you for saving my brain. If I could grant you a star I would.

CorporateWhore @ Nov 22nd 2006 3:50AM
@Kspraydad ... No problem
@johnlena ... to be fair you, it was no worse than 90% of the comment writing seen on this and other sites. I didn't mean to offend, I just thought it amusing.
I guess as I'm knocking on the door of 40, I place greater respect in the delivery of the language than I did twenty years ago. Although I'm no fan of the way you and others write your comments, although I recognise it's a way of indentifying yourselves with your peers, and gives those who practise it a sense of "belonging". No doubt if I were of the age, it would be the way I wrote whilst on the interent.
I love my PSP and I love the latest firmware, I'm looking forward to getting a PS3 as soon as the price becomes a little more realistic, which I realise may be a little while yet. They say patience is a virtue, I'm not sure many people think that these days.

I am so sick of people b***hing that the PlayStation Portable requires a PlayStation 3 to download PlayStation games, because THE PLAYSTATION PORTABLE DOES NOT REQUIRE A PLAYSTATION 3 TO DOWNLOAD PLAYSTATION GAMES!!!! Get it through your heads. SCEI is by no means stupid. The only reason they're tanking is because everyone's too stupid to listen to the facts.
