Hideo Kojima still misses his dear rumble
You may be thinking to yourself, "!", but it's more like "?", followed by a shrug or perhaps a strange pattern of walking. Metal Gear overlord and storyteller extraordinaire, Hideo Kojima, does indeed miss the rumble feature in the Sony controller for the PS3, as told in an interview with OPM. He even "hopes it will come back". A lot of people do, Kojima-san, a lot of people do.How about the motion-sensing? Kojima did say they would use it in some way, shape, or form, but wasn't specific as to what, exactly. Let's take some time to think about it. Would it be aiming? No, no... that needs more than six axes (axe-eees). Looking around corners? Maybe, but L2 and R2 did just fine there. Perhaps moving the camera after hitting the aforementioned buttons? No... the right analog was dandy. Perhaps controlling something akin to the Nikita missile? That would be subtle enough to not get in Kojima's way, but still a proper utilization. Leave us your theories here!

Maybe Psycho Mantis can come back and say "CHECK DIS OUT! MOVE YOUR CONTROLLER IN ANY RANDOM FASHION AND I CAN TOTALLY REPEAT THAT PATTERN!"
Like a Simon Says sort of thing.
JustinSLipPaGE @ Nov 25th 2006 12:12AM
Possibly he could use the tilt for cracking codes for access to doors and elevators by certain tilts of the controller.
Maybe as a way of sneaking up behind enemies and chocking them out for interegation by shaking the controller..
yami @ Nov 25th 2006 12:38AM
It could be used to handle Otakon little robot and other drive issues including Snake barrel slide like seen on the trailers.
bunnie @ Nov 25th 2006 1:11AM
Maning a gun turret? Would be cool especialy the way the SIXAXES triggers feel. Or You could have snake do some quick evasion rolling be moving left or right...
joe @ Nov 25th 2006 1:20AM
its obivious its for crawling. recall the last vid when hes crawling like crazy on his back. its called moving the controller back and forth like a crawling motion to do it.
it adds alot of depth into the crawling aspect
joey @ Nov 25th 2006 1:28AM
Tell him to get an xbox360, then he can be happy again.
CD @ Nov 25th 2006 2:06AM
I remember in a PSM interview he said it'd probably be something like shaking the controller to break someone's neck. Or maybe it was the interviewer who said that and he just went along with it. Either way I think it'll be something along those lines. Although I like the idea of conrolling the Nikita missile or a gun turret with it. MGS4 is just about the game I will really regret not getting to play since I don't ever plan on getting a PS3.
Dahk @ Nov 25th 2006 2:03AM
You're crazy joey. This is an MGS thread. Leave it be.
So perhaps he'll use the tilt for like first-person view. Kinda like you tilt your head? So you can tilt your controller however you want to tilt your head?
And then you can hold square and make them jiggle and dance and grab their dog-tags =) Damn was that ever fun. Ahhh *goes back to play mgs2*
So.. a question there. Is square still gonna be used as trigger? Or are the 'trigger' style R2's gonna be used for that?
Personally I loved MGS's original controls. I say leave them be =). The 'more tactile responses' should improve gameplay i guess?
Josh @ Nov 25th 2006 4:52AM
I assumed that the primary use of the tilt feature had already been shown in the last MGS4 trailer: to roll while you're crawling. Lie Snake prone and give a quick, sharp tilt to the side, and he's on his back. Keep it tilted, and he rolls. Sound good?
As much innovation as Kojima is able to squeeze out of just about any controller feature, I'm sort of hoping he doesn't incorporate too much tilting in MGS4. I played the Wii for the first time tonight, and the motion sensing is incredibly awkward and disorienting.
It's good to see a major developer expressing affection toward the old rumble feature.. maybe Sony will listen to Hideo-san, if not their fans.
Alfredo M. @ Nov 25th 2006 7:12AM
To crack enemy's necks while grabbing them!
or also
Maybe make dodging rolls left and right either standing, crouching or laid on the ground
Microdot @ Nov 25th 2006 10:47AM
personally... i dont miss the rumble. i wouldnt be against them bringing it back, but i never even think about it.... i enjoy it as is. i guess im different though, as i played most ps2 games with rumble turned off anyway (logitech wireless, and did so to save battery life)
as far as the tilt goes... its growing on me. i liked it at first, but am really starting to enjoy it now. ive played the wii, and its not the same... its all canned responses, and as stated, awkward. if it were a true freestyle control that mimiced exactly what you did with the wiimote, it would be different... but it doesnt have the power to push something like that. i like the way sony pulled this off... its not the centerpiece of the play... its in addition to, and compliments it nicely. it will be cool to see what developers can do with it in the future.
as far as mgs4 goes though... as others said: tuck and roll... snapping someones neck may be another feature in a silent attack... etc.
Number One @ Nov 25th 2006 10:50AM
Perhaps he should have programmed it exclusively for the Xbox 360, and with the time regained from wasting his time on the ps3 he could squeeze out a Zone of the Enders for us Wii owners!
Sixaxis = Cop out. Ya'll run along and go play Genji. Assuming you had enough bullets to shoot your way to owning a ps3. Or had 4 grand on your credit card to get one on EBay.
Kojima San, please come to your senses! Sony isnt worth it! I LOVE YOOOUUUUU!!!! HAHAHA!!
q @ Nov 25th 2006 1:57PM
Yeah, the more and more I think about, the more I think the tilting in the PS3's just going to end up a gimmick. The controller was fine without it, this just seems tacked on, unnecessary, and just used to compete with the Wii.
Whatever, I'll still get a PS3.
New 360 owner. @ Nov 25th 2006 2:18PM
Kojima-san,
360 still has rumble. Bring Metal Gear to Microsoft and you'll make a fortune. Bwahahahahahaha!
Eljefe @ Nov 25th 2006 7:29PM
You guys dont realize, rumble isnt relle important. I mean i tried the ps3, and a game w/o rumble, you relle dont notice the missing rumble, you relle dont care at all. the triggers are great too, it relle light tho, thats wat everybody was missing, thats why im filling up my ps3 controller with sand, you guys should of thought of that earlier. :D
ozymandias @ Nov 25th 2006 8:04PM
in the video, Snake gets inside a barrel and rolls around in it. a very simple use of the controller, but better than nothing.
Big Daddy Jay @ Nov 26th 2006 3:54AM
I love watching Sony fanboys try to justify the huge mistakes that Sony makes.
Dropping rumble was stupid. Rumble feedback adds another dimension to games that cannot be replicated any other way, yet a Sony fanboy will say:
"personally... i dont miss the rumble."
And as for the Sixaxis, LOL. A gimmicky, glitchy tack-on, Sony hastily slopped in to compete with real innovation (the Wii) as well as to make people forget that they screwed up the rumble aspects. And instead of accepting Sony's mistakes, fanboys will just make stuff up off the top of their heads in order to make the competition look bad:
"I played the Wii for the first time tonight, and the motion sensing is incredibly awkward and disorienting."
This actually made me laugh out loud! There were 25 people at my thanksgiving party, all of which played the Wii. In between our laughing and having a good time, not one of them said they felt "disoriented", in fact - I think the final count of how many Wiis were going to members of my family was 5 - even my 13 year old brother, a die-hard Sony fan said "Screw sony!" after getting his hands on it. I'm not making this up, just reporting the facts here.
Sony fans, stop trying to cover up the mistakes that make the PS3 a huge pile of dook. If you want innovation, fun and great games, get a Wii. If you want cool points, grafx and bragging rights in HD, get a 360. Or, you could get BOTH for the same price as the PS3!
C'mon now. You just can't argue with a deal like that, man.

i dont like sony because the amount of times my ps2 broke down. i got an xbox which never broke and still works after falling down the stairs. but the ps3 is still the best out of the 3 next gen consoles. I hate motion sensing controlers so i wont get a wii and the xbox 360 is too loud. you can use your old ps2 pads with a usb converter on the ps3 so you still get rumble in your ps2 games. you can install linux on the ps3 without having to mod chip it so you can load xbox and gamecube emulators on to it so you can play pc, xbox, gcube, ps1, ps2 and ps3 games on it. for the ps1 and ps2 games that dont work on the ps3 mabye an emulator will work, although if sony cant do it then i doubt it. the ps3 is the ultimate console because you can run a windows emulator on linux so you can play games for consoles that emulators only work on windows. the ps3 has the abilty to play almost every game ever made except the 360, the wii, and games that have emulation troubles. the ps3 has made me lke sony again, i just hope it doesn't do what the ps2 done and break down every three months.
Knoxin @ Nov 26th 2006 12:57PM

Oh and guess what when the 360 finnally released the new upgrade for 1080p, Ign said it was a "hassle" with configuration without and "HDMI CABLE".
And havent you heard of Firmware upgrades, u do urself as a 360 fanboy surf the ps3 news, n shit right? The bald guy Phil harrison said that any problems in the future, of course, will b fixed with upgrades.

LOl seeing that u like ign so much lets use it, it has charts on there to show u how much Gb's of data which is graphics can displayed at once, http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/617/617951p1.htmlthere is 3 pages of info there 4 you to read
*qoute Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth. the more u can display on screen at once*
Oh shit it was done in 2005 but nothing has change in the ps3 or xbox360
plus this was in the 20th od november AND THIS WAS POSTED HD scaling issues; Sony can’t help
Posted in PS3, Business, Hardware by Rossko UK on November 25th, 2006 at 14:19 http://www.playstatic.com/news/205
QOUTE*Sony has contacted us to let us know that they may have spoken a bit prematurely. SCEA’s Dave Karraker, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications, informed GameDaily BIZ that they currently cannot confirm that this 1080i issue will be resolved via a firmware patch. The official line is now that they are “looking into the issue and haven’t stated any actions that will be taken regarding it.”*QOUTE
Eljefe dude if u live near a cex in england please go there and see how shit it is for your self, are u telling me my own eye's made it look bad ?

Big Daddy Jay:
"Rumble feedback adds another dimension to games that cannot be replicated any other way"
Hmmm, i'm pretty sure rumble could be replicated by you just shaking the controller really fast, rumble adds nothing to the game really. It's just output, it doesn't change the way you play the game.
"And as for the Sixaxis, LOL. A gimmicky, glitchy tack-on, Sony hastily slopped in to compete with real innovation (the Wii)"
More of a gimmick than rumble? I'm pretty sure controlling an airship's flight with a controller is more of an addition to gameplay, than a simple scripted function like rumble.
"I think the final count of how many Wiis were going to members of my family was 5 - even my 13 year old brother, a die-hard Sony fan said "Screw sony!" after getting his hands on it. I'm not making this up, just reporting the facts here."
Yeh and then i bet you all shouted "Nintendo Rules!" at the end, did a little song and dance, Reggie came round to your house, and you all danced to some mario music. Jesus Christ.
"Sony fans, stop trying to cover up the mistakes that make the PS3 a huge pile of dook"
Yeh because that's what i brought my ps2 for, the rumble feature. Without rumble, the ps3 must be absoute crap huh? You mean i don't get to feel my controller move in my hands anymore? NOOOOOOO
"C'mon now. You just can't argue with a deal like that, man."
What are you? A frickin salesman? Why do you care what we buy? How does other people purchasing wii's affect your enjoyment, get over yourself. It seems the wii went down like a house on fire at that party, seems like you have enough friends already.
I don't know why you're preaching Nintendo to a PS3FANBOY site, DID YOU READ THAT? PS3FANBOY, not WIIfanboy. Honestly if you don't like the Playstation 3, or have no intention of ever purchasing one, then why come to a site that is FRICKIN DEDICATED to it? GO HOME.

theres the split screens of 360 and ps3 ridge Racer they have the same tracks
Eljefe @ Nov 29th 2006 8:17PM
Noxin plz, i kno about the memory thing, but, but it does not make the console better, look all the facts ppl compare and swear they think is beter. Each consoles has it ups n downs. but between these are equal, honestly i love all consoles. Though i do hate BASHERS when the come here. Anyways my facts telle me that the ps3 > or = 360>wii. Honestly from i link i showed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_seventh-generation_game_consoles i think the ps3 is better, i dont know how but i just compare..well whats bigger than the other.
And the link thati showed with the bald guy is the president of SCEA, im pretty sure i trust him a bit more than another guy i never heard of,
Finally no, rumble isnt needed, people think this is the downfall of the system, I mean if u relle want to kno the truth try the damn FREE kiosk down at ur locale electronic store.
