Defective PS3? No worries -- Sony promises replacements

A new system launches and behold -- defective units pop up like... something that pops up not too often but when it does it gets a lot more attention than the majority that are fine -- kind of like musicians and celebrities pretending to care about a certain cause. Was that cold? I don't care. They can visit third world countries from their private jets all they want and I'll always think they're being pretentious. Worst offender? Not sure, but that old MTV show "Trippin'" was pretty bad -- read up on Maddox's take [disclaimer: do not read if you take offense to pretty dirty language, etc]. Anyway, news.This is more for China and the launch in Taiwan, but we may as well assume that if defective units pop up in the US, we can get a replacement too. If your PS3 has a "serious defect", like a crapped out cell processor, or a disc loader that refuses to suck in those beautiful Blu-ray discs, SCE-Asia will replace the console. Maybe SCE-America will do the same. China Post states some defects as "tendency to overheat" and "jammed memory cards"... memory cards? Thought we were done with those. And not getting the ventilation system rigged properly would overheat any system -- don't flame saying the PS3 overheats all the time. Not true. If the 360, hell, even the GameCube, had a defunct fan system in place, it would overheat. Basically, if your PS3 sucks (for all 10 of you who bought it to actually play it... all the others are either still on eBay or in mommy's closet until Christmas/Hannukah), you can get it replaced. Spam Sony with e-mails. Do it!

ARE people having issues? ive seen the one guy with the slot loading issue... but havent seen or heard of anything else. 1 out of even 100,000 is pretty decent. maybe im missing something.
on the flip side, i ran through 3 xbox 360's before giving up and selling it, and even the damn wii that i bought for my son for xmas... we tested after hearing of horror stories on error codes via digg... even it was doa. thankfully, they arent selling as spectacularly here as they are the rest of the country i guess, and i swapped it out without too much issue. (current one seems to be working... or at least it booted and played fine after the whole "press a, set time, set date' crap)
given the sheer amount of hatred for the ps3 by the simpletons out there, i figured any and all issues would be plastered as front page news everywhere. i havent really seen that.

My thoughts are as to WHEN Sony thinks they will be able to replace defected PS3's. Sony can't meet the demand of the consumer and now they need to replace defective PS3's. If Sony were going to replace ALL of the shitty PS3's they way they should, they would be giving away ALOT of 360's! So that people can actually have a fun system to play with superior graphics, and games that don't SUCK! I've heard hardly anything good about Resistance even from PS3 Fanboys. Meanwhile Gears of War is blowing up the charts!

I dont think replacements are an issue. Some people have posted on forums that I've been reading that Sony has said they will have their replacement system in under a weeks time. I'm sure Sony (like any manufacturer) keeps a nice number of units on the side for replacement.

A replacement is way better than a 3 month warranty. Also the PS3 comes with one year warranty, that's why I picked no extended warranty from EB. I am on my third xbox 360 and just the other day, one of my usb ports stopped working. Maybe I'll go for my fourth 360. Due to the fact that the PS3 has no Ring of Light (or death), how will we know when it is dead? The ps3 does have a lot of lights in it. Maybe something like christmas lights will start flashing when it is dead.

They were test units. Plus they were running unfinished software and the test units were running all day long in a tight space with no air. Of course it's going to overheat. Any console would overheat

Wow, they're just now acknowledging the problems? I had a defective Wii and already got my replacement shipped to me by Nintendo. It arrived Friday. Hate to sound like a Nintendo fanboy but it's gotta suck to be a PS3 fanboy right now.

dont worry the wii will be done in like a year. they have already their one title that will succeed. (zelda) after all of the wii-tards finish that game all they will have to do is complain on message boards and wait for the next out of date piece of crap machine nintendo will have to offer. well i am glad i will own a ps3 instead of garbage...i mean a wii.

Right, because we all know Nintendo is only capable of making one good game per system, unlike Sony who makes great games. Oh wait... After we finish Zelda, we have plenty of other actually good titles to play. What do the PS3 guys have? Oh, just Resistance. You can own a "state of the art" system for $500+ if you want, but it doesn't mean crap without the games. Who has a piece of garbage? Oh and "wii-tards", extremely clever. Moron.

My PS3 has a disc loading defect so sadly i can't play it or do anything with it. I have sent sony a mail today but haven't got a response yet. Hope they can exchange my unit and get me a new one. this is very disapointing, I just thought i should let everyone know its not just a once off. I can see alot of people being disappointed christmas morning. anyone with a gift should test it. thats my advice.

Finally decided to open my ps3 after hearing about defective units(i was gonna wait till christmas to open)hooked it up to my HDTV and guess what?....the fuckin thing wont work. The disc would not load properly. Called sony and after answering a ton of questions, decided they will ship me a replacement. Maybe I should just go back to the store where i bought it and get my money back.

Hey martin you have to call (800)345-7669 and they will send you a box overnight fo you to send back for an exchange, but you better send to them as fast as you can because you dont want to be last in line inspite of the backorder of 60gb. I Have the same problem with my PS3 not not able to take any CDs,DVD,BLue-Ray, ect,. I sent mine on the 8th and im still waiting for my exchange.They said that it takes 3-5 days on turn around once they recieved it but im already on my 4th day and they still have not processed it.WTf!?
