Killzone is back, ready to redeem itself... with money!
There has been a lot of controversy regarding whether or not the original Killzone was all that great. Some say it was awesome, some say it was awful, still others say it was pretty good, but the hype detracted from the good game it would have been. If you expect something amazing and get something "just good", relatively, it's a bad game. But it's not. Make sense? Let's get on with the news, then. The PS3 Killzone had dropped out of sight ever since making an appearance at E3 2005. An article over at the Dutch newspaper "de Volksrant" was titled "A video game more expensive than the most expensive film," and lo and behold they were speaking of Killzone for the PS3. It's worth noting that the title was comparing costs to Dutch films, not worldwide films. But that means Killzone is costing more than $21 million. In addition to this news, the game will have downloadable content, adding a more episodic feel. So now we know -- Killzone isn't dead. Just really expensive.

I don't hate Killzone or the game developers behind it but here are my opinions:
Killzone- An over-hyped first-person shooting game exclusive on the PS2, which failed to live up to massive expectations. It was hyped by many, including Sony itself, as a "Halo-Killer". It was predicted to outsell Halo 2 (since PS2 consoles outnumbered the old Xbox by a wide margin), but in the end it failed.
Look at this: In America, it took Sony 29 days to sell 171,000 copies of Killzone. In the same territory, it took Microsoft 24 hours to sell 2,400,000 copies of Halo 2.
By removing Halo 2, Killzone is simply an average FPS game and I think it's best compared with Medal of Honor instead.
As for the next gen Killzone, the expectations and promises are rising once again. However, I would not be surprised to see Killzone PS3 present NOT AS A FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER, but more as an OVER-THE-SHOULDER 3RD PERSON SHOOTER ala Gears of War. Expect Guerilla Games to imitate what Epic made.
With Resistance: Fall of Man, a nice game, Sony does not need Killzone in the FPS format.

When they first siad Killzone was a Halo killer I didn't believe it, its not that Halo is anything godly either, in the end its just another generic brain dead fps, but what gave it status was 1. Microsoft 2. It was the best game on Xbox 3. Multiplayer was undoubtedly superb and 4. Ppl were stunned by the gfx and freedom of the game, never before had an FPS game been so ....open.
Other then that, there were several FPS games I had played and enjoyed more then Halo althogh I did have lots of fun on Halo, but by the time Halo 2 came out and I bought it and played the first level, I was already bored, only the online made up for the boredom I got from the campaign, and Halo 3 is again hyped.
Killzone had a pretty good storyline which could be really good if done well, I prefer the futuristic nazi idea more then the recycled freindly aliens speaking english ideas, but the game itself had several flaws and issues and overall wasn't near enough as good as Halo, Killzone 2 looks better, and Killzone PSP was fun. I just hope it lives up to the expectations, and seeing as my expectations arent that high seeing as all FPS games are pretty much the same, I expect it to reach and maybe even surpass those expectations.
If it does, then Killzone 2, Tekken 6, MGS4 and GTHD will be my "must buy" games for the PS3.

21 million dollars is a nice amount. The hype was huge when the trailer for KillZone2 came out. I agree that to make this game amazing, they new to make it a third-person shooter. Although I love FPS games, this type of game would work my fluently with a third-person perspective. Guerilla!!! Make us PS3 fans proud!!! We have the faith.

meh Pulse said it, Halo is overhyped, its just one of the few games that are "ok" for xbox, but if it would have been on all the systems, then it would have been lame, seriously. Oh, one of the best proofs to show that Halo is overhyped is that they are even making a Halo movie, yes, they went that low as to make a Halo movie, soon will have toilet papers with Master Chief's face on it.
sigh

Throwing money at something doesn't always make it better.
So basically what is happening here is 21 million dollars going down the drain.
Xtrminator @ Nov 30th 2006 2:34PM
I don't think they will imitate Gears Of War. Imitating is something EA would do :P !
PS: The newspaper is called Volkskrant, not Volksrant :D !

Waiting to laugh my ass off when this game gets 7s from every gaming magazinze in the world...

I wonder if part of that 21 million is going to be used to fill all the wasted space on those blu-ray disks? Is it any surprise that Sony and its partners are using "how expensive something is" as marketing for how good the game will be? It doesn't surprise me at all.
I love how people try to diss Gears because they have nothing worth playing on their year old console with a blu-ray drive, I mean, ps3. You can nitpick it all you want, but it's more innovative than anything that will be out exclusively on the PS3 for quite a while and it looks as good as anything the PS3 will see any time soon. Granted it's as much due to the Unreal engine than the game itself, but the cover system works great for console style controls and brings something new to the genre.
