Did MotorStorm live up to the "target render?"
So, you've seen the E3 MotorStorm video and now you've had a chance to play the MotorStorm demo on your mighty PS3. How do the two stack-up? Our good friends at Gametrailers.com have made the comparison easy for you via the handy video above. The verdict: somebody at Sony was drunk when they called the E3 footage the "target render" for the game. That said, I'm betting that MotorStorm could be the PS3's killer app. It's a pretty brilliant demo... let's hope that the gameplay holds up in the final version.

It's no cg masterpiece but it still looks pretty good. I'm about to go play it at Target since my PS3 is locked up in the closet not to be opened 'til xmas. :)
Sonyguy @ Dec 3rd 2006 1:13PM
This comparison should be linked in the GTHD thread. I can't beleive the rest of you still insist on saying "well i bet thats ingame THIS TIME.
Eljefe @ Dec 3rd 2006 1:28PM
Yea gameplay loooks relle nice but the gameplay looks likes it more colorful or something, dunno if tahts good or not cause doesnt look lik the realistic yellower-lighter-colored trailer, still love the game and its still impressive graphics though.
Matthew @ Dec 3rd 2006 2:31PM
In a joystiq post it said the "real gameplay" was from an earlier version of the demo, not the one being played on consoles people bought. So technically if everything was just dandy, the actual demo should look better than that. Oh and let everyone know...
the game is still being worked on!
alienclay @ Dec 3rd 2006 3:08PM
played the demo in target, and i do hope they turn down the color contrast just a bit.
jasonb @ Dec 3rd 2006 5:46PM
Ummmmm the gameplay looks like crizzap. I played this pile of steaming shit at target and I thought to myself "I've been playing games that make this look like baby shit on a daily basis for the last year on my 360".
I'm not really here to talk shit, I just don't understand why you guys are even looking at this thing, when the 360 has games that make this look like a colecovision.
seriously, what gives?
poseidon @ Dec 3rd 2006 6:22PM
"That said, I'm betting that MotorStorm could be the PS3's killer app."
Do you really think so??? Bwah!?
A killer ap is a game that is so good it sells consoles. ??? I don't see how this game is going to sell PS3's. Gears of War, Zelda for the Wii...those games come to mind...Motorstorm...meh.
I don't think the PS3 has a killer ap yet. So much is evident by the lousy attach rates. Resistance is cool and all...but it reminds me of PREY for the 360...in that 6 months from now everyone will have forgoten about it.
wiilad101 @ Dec 4th 2006 2:27PM
cough fanboy ALERT defending sonys LIES LIES LIES its the same every generation emotion engine can bla bla bla cell can bla bla bla
theres nothing there wii carnt do and loads missing in gameplay wii can do wii can match or beat that minus hd modes
THERES NO GRAPHICS ARGUMENT ANYMORE ITS ALL ABOUT THE NEXT STED AND WII HAS TAKEN THAT STED
ALLSO MASSIVE ADVASMENTS IN THINGS LIKE RAY TRASING AND LIGHTING WILL MAKE GPUS AS WE KNOW THEM DEAD
Derek @ Dec 3rd 2006 6:53PM
Come on people, stop trying to bring life to this console. I have a 360 but i'm not a fanboy, i'm a gamer and this game does not look good for todays standards. if it would have came out last year then I would be impressed. I hate to say it but the 360 has a year head start and I dont think the PS3 can catch up. I'm not going to lie, if the PS3 gets good games then I will get one but dont be so closed minded to one brand that you realy beleive this looks good.
Guardian Anubis @ Dec 5th 2006 9:35PM
What's funny about the video, is that they are using the demo and not the final build which looks different and is much more refined.

Give me a break nothing is going to look like that, not this gen.
tristan @ Dec 3rd 2006 7:55PM
Oh the reason the game is till being worked on is because for the us version they are adding online. The japan version is done which doesn't have online. I don't expect the graphics to change and I played this at Target I wasn't really impressed the particle affects are almost nonexistent. I hope Colin racing game to make up for what motorstorm didn't deliver.

eh whatever you naysayers are full of crap. People failed to mention any kind of console specificity on Assassin's Creed and everyone assumed it was PS3 exclusive without any proof. Target render basically means that they are trying to achieve a certain type of game; that does not mean that it should or could be graphically as intense as the target, it's just "concept art" in motion. They just wanted to get something out there that would give people an idea of what kind of game they wanted to make. There are quite a few pictures of Gears of War that were target renders that never appeared in the game (see many of the print ads that are out).
Spock @ Dec 3rd 2006 11:34PM
@12.
Problem is, Sony insisted on telling us that the trailer was in game just like killzone. I don't care if it's still being worked on, it's not going to be much better, if any better at all, than what we've been looking at with this demo. Anybody thinking otherwise is in denial about this console. Sony played their hand in trying to get people on the fence from buying a 360 until PS3's release and now we see that our faith was misplaced. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but now I KNOW they were full of it.
george @ Dec 4th 2006 1:03PM
Why are people in here bashing the ps3 when this is a ps3 fanboy site? That seems extremely pathetic that you have nothing better to do. I have a 360 and recently bought a ps3 and played the demo. It looks as good as any game on 360 except maybe gears of war, plus it is alot of fun! Maybe you didnt see it on a proper setup, try a samsung 50 inch hdtv and tell me it doesnt look spectacular? I wouldnt trade my 360 for the ps3 and i know the ps3 doesnt have anything killer app yet but i think it was pretty much expected with a new system.
djphatjive @ Dec 4th 2006 2:01PM
I look back and I don't remember any 360 renderings that lied to me. I do remember Sony rendering like this one and killzone and a bunch of others that they try and pull off as actual game play and it isn't. Thats what I like about the 360. I never and still don't feel like I was ever lied too about what it could do. That to me is more important that anything graphics or gameplay. Because if I buy the system using there advertisements, I should expect exactly what I'm getting.
teenageloser @ Dec 5th 2006 9:59PM
"Target render basically means that they are trying to achieve a certain type of game; that does not mean that it should or could be graphically as intense as the target"
rendering is mainly for graphical purposes. target rendering is there to show you how the game is expected to look, they dont need to make a new rendered video just to show you how what the game is like, they can just show you in game footage for that, but it doesnt look as good so they give you a rendered video because its graphically superior.
"Maybe you didnt see it on a proper setup, try a samsung 50 inch hdtv and tell me it doesnt look spectacular?"
not everybody has a 50" hdtv, so we cant see how it looks, but if you throw in Gears of War on a standard def tv it still looks amazingly better than many other games in hd
GL @ Dec 29th 2006 7:50AM
Wow! A tiny little comparison videio about the size of a matchbook. Great....NOT!
Play the game on a 50" 1080p set after it's released. Then, get back to me. Thanks.
It probably wont look *as* good as the trailer. But very close.
The trailer looks more realistic, but washed out yellow. While the in-game play looks more lively and colorful.
