Ripping Blu-ray movies to the PS3
News is speading like wildfire across the Interwebs that another deathblow has been dealt to the PS3. This time, hackers have successfully ripped a Blu-ray disk to the PS3s harddrive.I say, so what? Who cares if you're able to rip Blu-ray data to the HDD? And who care if you can burn that data to another disc (which hasn't happened yet)? The issue here is all about actually being able to play that rip or that burn. So far, no news on if anyone has actually played back that ripped data. Getting past Blu-ray encryption is entirely different than ripping some data. Good luck with that in the short-term!
I wouldn't call for the demise of Blu-ray just yet, or place my bets on the availability of "free" Blu-ray movies anytime soon.

Getting the iso off the disc isnt that big of a deal. The DRM is still intact and part of that DRM is a watermark built into the BD-ROM disc... which isnt on the iso and cant be replicated (yet) on BD-R/RW discs.

If you could rip and play BR discs off a PS3 HDD, even if it was a hack, I would say that would be more of a selling point than another blow to the system. Maybe a blow to the Blu-Ray Forum and BR publishers, but definitely not to consumers.

This along with the ability to dump PS3 games directly from from the console is going to be a serious deterant for Game makers and Movie studios for putting content on the PS3. The same thing happened to the Dreamcast. Sony could give a damn less what is good for the consumer, they are in it to make money and to do that they need to be responsible to their shareholders and partners producing games for this console.

Even if the Blu Ray Disc is 25GB , the movie file only tops around 10-12GB's , it doesnt use the disc completely . same with Xbox360 games , even if the DVD game is a DVD9 part of the disc is empty , like example Codemned Criminal Origins is only 2GB's tops and the disc used haves 8.5GB's of space.
