Firmware 1.31 details, just for kicks
The funny thing is, I've already written this post once. It vanished into the black hole of the internet. Needless to say, I'm incredibly annoyed at that. Incredibly. It's understandable, though. We just got a new system up and running here at the HQ, and it's not perfect yet. I guess. Whatever. Anyway, here's what's new from that 1.31 firmware update in case you were wondering! This is straight from Sony, link included. From the "Settings":
- You can now register the BD remote control in [Register Bluetooth® Device] under [Accessory Settings].
- [BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)] has been added as an option under [BD/DVD Settings].
- [Backup Utility] has been added as a feature under [System Settings].
- You can now select the hard disk format method in [Format Utility] and [Restore PS3™ System] under [System Settings].
- The method of selecting output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
From "Games" and other miscellaneous stuff:
- New for 1.31: You can now play PlayStation®2 format software titles that must be installed on the hard disk (this is namely Final Fantasy XI, but weren't there other HDD titles?)
- The compatibility of USB devices with PlayStation®2 format software titles has changed. For details on USB devices that can be used with system software version 1.30, select here.
- New for 1.31: Playability status with the PS3™ system has changed for some PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format titles. To check on the latest status, visit the search site for compatible titles.
Good stuff, right? Seems there are pretty frequent updates coming in for the PS3 and that's good news. But since everyone loves bad news, here's a little. Phantasy Star Universe is killing my PS2. I think. The disc won't load, but it's pristine! Every other disc, including the old blue-bottomed ones, load great. Does anyone have any idea why my PS2 is discriminating? I'd really appreciate the help!

Does PSU work on the PS3? :p (cheap shot, I know)
Did you leave the disc in your car on a hot day or anything like that?
About the updates, it's cool that they are updating it I guess. The only thing that bothers me about the updates is resyncing the controller. Other than the updates, I've not had to cable sync or disconnect yet! (knock on wood)

Now that the hard drive stuff is working, does that mean I can download the hard drive stuff for the Socom games? I never had a hdd on PS2, so it'd be cool to try out some new maps.
About your PS2 Nick, when mine started doing that it was on it's way out. It would just pick and choose which games it felt like loading. Good luck.

Yes Nash, you can download the content as the PS3 will act exactly like a PS2 HDD would work.
Too bad that at the moment it seems that is only available in Japan (system files must be downloaded from the Store).
He dicho.

If I can Register the BD Remote, then Why Can't I Buy One.
Tyler @ Dec 15th 2006 4:25PM
You can download it from the japanese store by making a new user and signing up for the Playstation Network (set your country as japan)
As for resyncing the controller? I've never have had to do it and its never 'disconected' on me like many other people are complaining about.. oh well

PS3 is in stock at Walmart.com. Only as bundle though.
Andrew @ Dec 15th 2006 5:10PM
Attention! FYI, for anyone looking to buy a ps3 they are in-stock at walmart.com as of 5PM friday. They are bundles but you can just return the games you don't want to a wal-mart store for credit. Enjoy.

I've said it before and I will say it again, maybe I ccan get enough people to bug Sony about it until they do the following. Support ALL usb devices, USB network adapter especially. Support ALL Playstation 2 controllers. More along the lines of Eye Toy, DDR, and GH. Not that I have those but it would truely make for some happy customers. Again, just an opinion.

The PS2 HDD data is available on the Store. I saw it yesterday.
