PS3 uses Wiimote, consumes competition
What happened there? Just another amazing bit of Linux usage -- the PS3 used the Wiimote for the presentation. Who would've thought the PS3 could also serve as a business presentation tool? There's not really much else to say from a news angle, but really, what can't the PS3 do? And could someone explain why the SIXAXIS wouldn't have worked just as well for a "mouse pointer" device?

Microdot @ Dec 18th 2006 11:22AM

"And could someone explain why the SIXAXIS wouldn't have worked just as well for a "mouse pointer" device?"
This is true, unless they were using the IR camera on the wiimote. Otherwise it would be probably be similar to the SIXAXIS... as far as I know.

Why would it hurt their pride? Even if you're a Nintendo fanboy, hacking things is always fun!

Remember everyone, if one is ever interested in reading one of those weird japanese sites, just use google language tools to translate it for you.

@travis: "some items shouldnt be used to perform certain functions. perhaps ill start using the sixaxis controller to wipe my ass with."
Well, that's a stupid idea, the 360 controller has much more surface area for better wiping. Everybody knows that!
travis @ Dec 18th 2006 2:47PM
very true. the surface is a bit more rounded too. more ass to controller contact there...
Tyler @ Dec 18th 2006 12:27PM
@Travis: Dont forget about the rumble feature! it'll be cool when your uh... i'll just stop there
Microdot @ Dec 18th 2006 2:10PM

Free? Unless someone is looking to hand everyone who wants this a PS3 and Wiimote, then sure, it's free. It's rare anything is ever free, especially in the gaming market.

So, we had PS3 60 GB's at target all day Thursday. I grabbed 2 (wife and I) to sell on ebay. Took forever to sell!
We went Sunday morning to get wee. 50 people in line outside .. only 30 people got one.
I would say you guys have a real problem. I was scared I wouldn't get rid of those things and eat the ebay fees.
Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings. I am just telling you the truth. Nintendo is really kicking your butt.
Chris @ Dec 18th 2006 3:43PM
LOL.. I said Wee... :P

um, wow, what a way to spin a story.
The wii-mote is a bluetooth device. PS3 is bluetooth enabled. GlovePIE is part of wiili.org's implenentation, and runs as an extracted zip file in any windows or linus environment. The guy using this got it from a script from someone who made it because he needed a remote for his Blu-ray dvd player/PS3, and the PS3 remote isn't out yet.
I have one working on my laptop, in MS windows XP. If you know visual C#, you can make quick scratch work of GLOVEPIE. This is not PS3 innovation, it is GlovePIE bluetooth innovation, and GlovePIE is credited to a guy in Australia named Carl Kenner.

I know nothing is coming out this week for any console, and things have been slow here, but can you please keep the news to this planet?
Dahk @ Dec 18th 2006 8:10PM
So Chal, can we not talk about the abilities of the PS3?
So with scripts, is it not true then that the PS3 can use the wiimote? The fact that PS3 was linux capable, gives it an advantage, because certain wii isn't friendly towards windows/linux/osx.
Besides Chal, I like reading Doerrmandood's jokes. Gives a bit of entertainment to a boring day. Compe-tence? Haha =) That was awesome nickyboy.
ndoerr @ Dec 19th 2006 2:06AM
@ Dahk -- thanks Dahk! =) I try so hard to make little to no sense! It's like one of those jokes that start out funny, but they're dragged on way too long until the logic train derailed a few miles back. Kind of like some of the Family Guy jokes... but less primetime.
Chal @ Dec 21st 2006 4:22PM
@Dahk, if you want to talk about what enables PS3 to do this, it is simple: A supported Windows Operating System, and Bluetooth compatibility.
1. You do not need Linux to run GlovePIE. This works in windows, running on your desktop. It was just designed by Carl Kenner to use the P5 Glove to run functions and play games on a pc. He is part of the wiili project, which I think will be successful. So, in all, the PS3 in this example is running Windows 2000 or XP SP2 using a bluetooth device. Being that Sony is saying the PS3 is a complete computer, it should definitely be abe to do at least this.
Now, let's see someone homebrew an app to let the sixaxis play with anything that goes bluetooth!
homebrew FTW!
