PS3 crosses the 1 million mark -- total units available? 1 million
So the subject line isn't exactly true. There are probably more than 1 million units in circulation, but there can't be much more than that. Still, the news is true: PS3 has successfully crossed the 1 million units sold mark and has no intention of slowing down (we assume that last part). The lovely website keeping track of total unit sales does indeed place the PS3 in third, but really, what did we expect? It's pricey, there aren't that many, and there aren't a lot of games for it. With all that "against" it, making it to one million is still something to applaud. The Wii is in second with about 2.5 million units sold worldwide and the 360 is still pretty far ahead in first with a "whopping" 7 million. We say "whopping" and not whopping because we expect all these numbers to skyrocket once the old-gen systems are completely abandoned. Say, mid 2007. Oh, and the DS is kicking the PSP's bum. Not really news, but hey, at least the PSP is kicking the 360's bum, right? Right? Anyone? Aww.

Not credible. Nor is Nexgenwars.com.
Why would I take the word of vgcharts when they admit to using Japanese data as their primary source? NPD isn't even credible, as not all retailers participate.
It is probably safe to assume ALL systems have sold more than these websites think they have.

Judging from the numbers that http://videogamecharts.com/
(not vgcharts.org or nextgenwars and and doesnt use computational curves) reports on known numbers from NPD and Japan's media
crate: so far the PS3 has SOLD 200k at the end of November in
the US and 300k as of last week in Japan. So the PS3 would only need to
sell another 500k between the entire month of december in the US PLUS
the last 2 weeks of December in Japan. Wich isnt only possible, its more than likely.
As for NPD not being acurate? well its the most accurate in the US. NPD has its ways to account for the retailers that dont participate in its research. They are a company making their income off of this research, so they have to be accurate. More accurate than some fanboy saying "those numbers dont SEEM accurate" thinks they are.

have they actually sold that many or is it just the amount available cus the tile contradicts what is in the text title: "PS3 crosses the 1 million mark -- total units AVAILABLE? 1 million" quote "PS3 has successfully crossed the 1 million units sold mark" WTF?????
Vince @ Dec 23rd 2006 7:37PM
Huggy, it's pretty safe to say that every PS3 produced is as good as sold, for at least the next year they wont be sitting on shelves for more than five minutes, by then it might be ten minutes.

NPD is not entirely accurate, nor is it meant to be. NPD receives data from a small portion of the overall market, and then estrapolates the data to make an educated guess on what they believe overall sales to be. For the record, their data does not include a couple of major retailers.
Now is there data meant to be referenced as factual? Of course not. Those in the industry subscribe to NPD data to follow trends and indicators, and for that, it works pretty well.
As far as referencing the data as factual, we'll that's not really the case. Ever notice how a lot of their numbers end in x,000,000? (even). Like that would ever happen.
But certainly use NPD as an indicator of how the market is growing and rough percentages of marketshare for each system.

PS3 is in 3rd for now... but it'll be number one by next year. I just don't see the Wii being a long term threat.... PS3 just needs a good base of games, and some exclusive features... I'd like to play downloaded ps1 games on the ps3, and I'd like to get those in game custom sound tracks running, and more downloadable games, like blast factor... simple games fun games, like those are needed as well. Just a plethora of ways to enjoy the ps3. Honestly, I don't think price is really an issue w/ the ps3, it just needs to show off all it's features.... I think families w/o computers would love to know that their ps3 could be used as such... show it off to be more than a gaming machine...

Xbots get mad the more the PS3 sells.
