Forget about that Bluetooth PS3 remote

The biggest "design flaw" I've experienced with the PS3 is the lack of an IR remote/receiver to control the mighty monolith. It irks me to no end that Sony felt the need to release only a Bluetooth remote (appearing in stores now). It sort of defeats the purpose of having a fancy universal remote to control all of your home theater components. Certainly the world's greatest HD movie player deserves better. Thanks to Engadget -- via Remote Central -- we can again live the "one remote to control them all" dream.
"You'll need a PSX/PS2 Controller-to-USB adapter as well as an original Sony DVD remote for the PS2 (model SCPH-10172) with external IR receiver (model SCPH-10160)."
It might be a bit of an eyesore and it will take some expense and effort, but it can be done! Certainly Sony must have realized that many home theater enthusiasts would be utilizing the PS3's advanced multi-media capabilities as an integral piece of their home theater. How hard would it have been to include an IR receiver on the PS3? Shame on you, Sony.

Typical Sony "rush-it-to-market" shortsightedness.

I have a Xbox 360 Harmony universal remote. I will buy the bluetooth PS3 remote because I don't want that thing hanging off the front. It would be nice if it just had a IR receiver on it. Even the PSP has one.

along with that patented arrogance.
"Who would want to replace the ps3 remote? It's the best remote in the entire universe... why... it's the remote that will change your entire life just by picking it up... we laugh at the idea of people wanting to combine it in with a universal remote, make it bluetooth to keep foolish people from ruining their PS3 remote control experience! Yes! That is the solution."

i will agree with the crybabies on this one. i dont think sony thought about this at all. while it wont affect me... i know it will be a thorn in the side to those that bought the ps3 for its media center capabilities. however... it is a plus for me, as i can now create something in nix to use it there. but i am in the ultra small minority.
on the brighter side, it may offer a third party chance to take a stab at it. a simply and small usb ir receiver is possible. but definitely a sony screw up here.

I've just got another PS3/bluetooth question for everyone. I've been mulling getting a bluetooth headset for the PS3, but I wasn't sure if I could just get any one I wanted or it had to be a certain one, maybe someone could help me here. I knew going to Best Buy and asking would be a waste of time.

There are tons of USB-PS2 Controller port adapters on the market. Most people use these to be able to use their PS2 controller on there PC. You can find them for around $15.
Cheapest thing to do would probably be to find one of these, and then grab the PS2 remote off ebay. Stick the usb adapter into the PS3 with the IR adapter attached, toss the remote in the closet and setup your uni remote.
With some creativity, I'm sure you could velcro the usb adapter to the underside of your media center or tv stand to keep it partially hidden.
But if I were a betting man, I would gander that someone like Logitech's Harmony line will add bluetooth functionality to one of their uni remotes in the very near future. So if you hate the idea of the attachment, a new uni remote w/BT is probably in the planning stages.

Having had Dish Network and their PVR, I can't tell just how much better an RF remote is better than IR. Simply put, IR blows, with RF ie Bluetooth, I won't have to figure out some wierd angle because I have a bunch of people over and someone is standing in front of the IR.

I happened to have all the required components save the usb to psx adapter. A quick run to Radio Shack and I thought I was all set. Didn't work for me. But still works on my PS2.
It could be that the version I got from Radio Shack is a bit proprietary in that on my PC I had to use the driver CD to recognize the device and PS2 Controller. But it worked fine on my PC afterwards.

2 MAJOR ISSUES WITH THE PS3
1: I can't update my PS3 with the standard USB Thumb Drive w/ the update software on it, and I can't get my stupid 1.01 v. or whatever to recognize that it's hooked up to the Internet. Everything is set up for my baby bunny, but it won't drink the bottle...WTF!?
2: That's pretty much it....Thumb Drive Retarded, and Internet
And If I can't update the PS3, then how can I get it online to Update? AGGHHHH!!!!
