PS3 was the holiday's "most wanted" item
Random news-monger, Nearby Networks, claims that the PS3 was the most sought after item this holiday season by online shoppers. The near-meaningless press release goes on to put the Wii in the fourth place slot, just after the uber-coveted Nissan Maxima. Take that, Nintendo! And, of course, the Xbox 360 is bested by the mighty Subaru WRX... certainly this is more proof that superior Japanese engineering will always prevail against Microsoft. Here's the Top 10:1. Sony PlayStation 3
2. TMX Tickle Me Elmo
3. Nissan Maxima
4. Nintendo Wii
5. Boondock Saints movie merchandise
6. Subaru WRX
7. Xbox 360
9. Apple iPods
9. Suzuki GSXR
10. Computers
What in the world is Boondock Saints?

how does one determine what is the most "wanted" item? simply by how many times it was searched for? I checked ebay for example tons of times each day to see how much the price was dropping on them
Wip3dout @ Dec 28th 2006 10:49PM
Boondock Saints was a great Movie. If you haven't seen it then stop now and go rent it.
Tristan @ Dec 28th 2006 10:50PM
Well they are going to be easy to get now after the holidays. IT happened with the 360 an dit will happen with the ps3. I'll be getting mine in january. I only want it for blu ray, warhawk, and motorstorm nothing else.
scott @ Dec 29th 2006 1:12AM
actually 360's weren't easy to get until like march-april. I worked at gamestop during 360 launch, I continue to work there now. We are not the only retail store now with 5+ ps3's sitting in our back with nobody even asking about them. We had to put signs on our doors to let people know we even had them in. We've had 8 sitting in our back room since early yesterday, had maybe 3-5 people asking for them, but were instantly turned off by the price. (I work in a very busy mall store). The EB games below us has had 6 in their back room as well, not even selling them. The ps3 is DEFINITELY not the holiday's "most wanted" item, it was the nintendo wii by a long shot. On average we get 200-300 requests per day for the wii, and maybe 10-20 requests for the ps3.
Andir2.0 @ Dec 29th 2006 12:58AM
scott: The 360 didn't have 1 Million units (at least) available for purchase by the end of the year either.

"What in the world is Boondock Saints?"
... More proof that this blog is written by teenagers. I know this site is meant to be a "fanboy" site, and I guess that might be appropriate. Reading the posts on this blog reminds me of the times I was reading high school book reports written by 15 year olds.

TMX Tickle Me Elmo > Nissan Maxima?
i'm surprised

@JR I think I watched Boondock Saints for the first time when I was 15 coincedentally...
scott @ Dec 29th 2006 1:21AM
never said it did, but while working there we didn't have them sitting in our back room for 2 days like we do the ps3. The 360's went like nuts until February before they started slowing down, then in march-april we started having 5 or so in our back room steadily.
OffTopic Man @ Dec 29th 2006 1:18AM
Bestbuy.ca had 80 PS3s of the 60GB packs in stock this afternoon, they sold out in less than an hour.
scott @ Dec 29th 2006 1:22AM
sorry for the double post.
I'm well aware that 360 quantities were extremely limited as well last year, but to have 5-6+ sitting in our back room for 2 full days was unheard of. That sort of thing didn't happen until late February/early march. The demand for the ps3 is nowhere near as high as it was for the xbox. People are slowly realizing how ridiculously overpriced it is for a GAMING MACHINE. I'm aware of the specs in the system, and I slightly agree for what you pay for it, it's worth it. But the majority of people who bought ps2 didn't buy it for its dvd capabilities, they bought it to play games. Which is why they want the ps3. But when they see the price tag and realize it's so overpriced because of the FORCED blu-ray being shoved down their throats, they look for other options. Sure 360 with an hd-dvd player comes to near same price, but its an OPTION. It's not some lame forced thing we don't have a choice on. Not alot of normal consumers care about blu-ray or hd-dvd right now, I ask them if they know what blu-ray is an they stare at me blankly, which is understandable. I just don't understand why sony felt the need to shove it down our throats, using the excuse that the games needed the space on the disc? It's a trojan horse for them to try and make blu-ray work, unlike all their failed new media types. Having the best graphics doesn't mean success either, look at WoW vs EQ2, or the ds vs the psp, ds is slaughtering the psp in sales, and wow is slaughtering eq2, both of which the latters have far superior graphics.

Everyone was obsesed with Booddock Saints last summer... though I have no idea why.. Other than the brothers, the acting was horrible and it seemed like IT was written by a 15 year old.
Andir2.0 @ Dec 29th 2006 1:56AM
scott: You ignored (or purposely failed to add) the fact the Best Buy is hording those consoles for some "big sale" for year end. They probably have some flier coming out for this weekend with the PS3 in it and they want to have stock. I haven't checked yet but if the speculations are correct and Sony has shipped over 1 million, the supply will be obliterated when people see that BB has guaranteed stock. It will of course bring tons of people into the store and may gain residual sales of other items in the process. Only a few people know if the million mark was hit, but Best Buy would see a demand trend if it was true and would want to get as much hype as they could out of it.
Erik @ Dec 29th 2006 2:11AM
Boondock Saints is garbage...utter garbage. Laughable at best. Pathetic excuse for a cult classic. Cult maybe... classic never.
juggy @ Dec 29th 2006 3:39AM
its funny to me how many posts ps3fanboy can make str8 hating on the 360 or even the wii. they go by some no name sites ratings over something like ign. everyone knows that the wii was the most wanted system for this holiday. i can find ps3 off the shelf but i cant of the wii. now thats sayin something. please ps3fanboy, more news and less hate. share the love and please help me not hate such stupid journalism.
GL @ Dec 29th 2006 7:59AM
scott,
The "forced" argument is a weak argument. How can you be forced if the 360 and Wii are available? And the 360 has been available for a year. Hmmmm? Tell me.
Tristan @ Dec 29th 2006 5:39AM
Well if you went to Costco, you get them with no issues. In my area thats when all the pre-orders people had starting rolling in.
Tristan @ Dec 29th 2006 10:00AM
I'm 16 and I saw it last year. It was a pretty good movie.
kayzai @ Dec 29th 2006 7:49AM
PS3: Most wanted item?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
The SONY send them a free PS3 or something?
It's almost like saying PS3 freezing is a feature OR, "We could sell 5 million PS3s WITHOUT even releasing a game".
Fits in well with other dumb comments from Sony.
josh @ Dec 29th 2006 10:25AM
LOL so stupid. "Most wanted" as in counting the number of people who viewed online PS3 pages to see what the hubub was all about and then promptly left to go buy a wii after finding it costs $1000+ after needed extras and games.
Just looking at a webpage doesnt particularly mean you WANT something. lol. Talk about reading a bit much into webstats.
Malfoy Roark @ Dec 29th 2006 10:48AM
Speaking of most wanted, did the haters even CHECK ebay in Decemember? The number 1 item being searched for constantly switched between the PS3 and the TMX (not the Wii). Because there are a few stores that have doesn't mean no one wants it, It means there are people in your area who doesnt want. Here in the Hampton Roads, VA area there are still waiting lists for the PS3 and Wii in EB/GS and gamecrazys and the rate we get them, the lists wont be done till end of jan probably.
I stood in line 36 hours for my PS3, 6 hours for my Wii, hopefully Wii bowling will never get old cause that's all I wanted for it :( .
Malfoy Roark @ Dec 29th 2006 10:54AM
Got sidetracked.
How do you NOT know about Boondock Saints??!!?
Dahk @ Dec 29th 2006 12:50PM
Wow Ed, you caused a lotta commotion with that last comment there =).
Anyway, read it boys. ON FREAKING LINE.
ONLINE SHOPPERS. I'll say it again for the 10 freaking doods who can't read.
ONLINE SHOPPERS.
This has absolutely nothing to do with ps3's abilities, or its in-store stock, or the stock of the other systems or ANY FRIGGIN thing like that.
The fact stands that at launch, the PS3 was THE item to go on sites like eBay and other such forums.
And sorry Kayzai, I'm pretty sure they didn't send them a PS3 or else they would've sent them a Maxima as that got ahead of Wii in online distributions as well.
SuicideNinja @ Dec 29th 2006 2:52PM
"The fact stands that at launch, the PS3 was THE item to go on sites like eBay and other such forums."
That would seem to contradict this story:
http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/ps3-grey-market/feature-the-decline-of-the-ps3-grey-market-224984.php
Everyone is talking about the freaking Wii...I don't see how the PS3 could top this chart. Then again, the price tags (from retail to ebay) probably scared potential customers away. Don't forget that a lot of people didn't know how much the PS3 was going to be, which also means they probably knew nothing of Blu-ray.
Brian James @ Dec 29th 2006 3:16PM
***18*** PS3's sitting on the floor at Best Buy in a busy shopping district in Kansas City.
None sold in the last 24 hours.
Here's a pic I took yesterday:

Guess nobody wants a $600 gaming system when they can play games on an the 360 for for $400?
Groggy @ Dec 29th 2006 7:37PM
I just got Back from EB Games here in NY he said they have 8 PS3 in the back. not one person has asked for one.
Ray @ Dec 29th 2006 11:22PM
Yeah, the Wii was definately the most wanted thing this year. After the initial launch of the PS3 and the news coverage it got; all attention shifted to the Wii and the PS3 was forgotten in the media over all. The Wii has been consider the most wanted item this year on a few local (NY) newscast, G4TV, and even Forbes magazine IIRC.
The PS3 is an awesome system and I want one down the road, but in the past 3 weeks I could have had one on 4 different occasions in EB and Walmart, but it took me knowing someone at Kmart who held one of the 3 Wii they got in stock 2 weeks ago for me to be able to finally get one, and they even had me hide it in a black bag as I left so as not to cause a problem with people thinking they had more.
Dahk @ Dec 30th 2006 1:59AM
Again Ray, they said online.
Also guys, there are lots of stock of ps3s in many stores. However, most are 20 Giggers which people are unwilling to get obviously because of the lack of Wifi. In most cases, 60 Giggers still do not exist on most stores shelves over where I am.
Also much of the stock depends on where you live. I was lucky enough to get one in a rural town (Alliston, ON) where no one even had an HDTV so no one cared for PS3. However, the city is a different story. Even the suburbs, HDTVs are really quite popular. And in these cases, 60GB PS3s mostly cannot be found.

"7. "What in the world is Boondock Saints?"
You're joking, right?
That's like asking, "Who's Quentin Tarantino?""
OUCH. That movie is an interesting but painful watch, certainly not in my book with Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. "Influenced by," but not in the same league.
Ultimately more interesting is the documentary "Overnight,' the behind-the-scenes story of how Boondock Saints came to be, the massive ego of it's 'Cinderella-story' writer/director Troy Duffy, and his eventual return to nothingness...
