Nintendo versus Sony, in stocks

Sales figures and stock prices are important to any fanboy's repertoire. For some reason, there's a strange assumption that higher sales of a system means better games (something that I'd like to disagree with ... RIP Dreamcast). However, considering how we're all invested (mentally) in the industry, it's still fascinating to see how gamer perception reflects upon stocks--and Digital Battle did the research for us.
Sony fanboys know that Sony hasn't done as well as they could've this year, with both the PSP and PS3 launches. Nintendo has been on a roll with the Wii and the DS, and it appears the stock reflects that nicely. However, considering how Sony is a mega-conglomerate corporation, one can't assume the poor performance of the video game devision is to blame for their fiscal stagnation: I'm sure exploding batteries haven't helped them one bit.

Just looks like Sony closed out the year at about where they started, while Nintendo is spiking thanks to DS sales.
This article also wrongly states the Wii was the best selling console this holiday, which it was not (beaten by the DS, PS2, GBA and 360).
I still say the Wii will wind up #3 in another year or two, and the PS3 will, again, be on top with the 360 being #2 in the USA and not even on the charts in Japan.
The DS, on the other hand, clearly has the planet by the short hairs. Although I myself don't find many of the DS games compelling (like Pokemon, Cooking Mama, Brain Age, Nintendogs, etc), you can't argue with results.
Even so, despite the ongoing slam-fest of Sony in the media and blogs like Kotaku or Joystiq, I'm not disappointed in the PSP. Lots of good games that *I* like and sales that have actually been pretty good. You don't see much notice about the PSP selling over 400K units this Christmas, right in the neighborhood of the Wii, PS3 and even 360 (of course, those are NPD numbers, which are lacking online sales data).

i could have predicted this with my eyes closed, sony is losing $200 on every ps3 sold and nintendo is making a profit off every wii sold, of course the stocks aren't going to look pretty at least right now. Once ps3 development costs come down, more people get ps3s, and the ps3 get more killer apps, then it'll start see profit. I suspect sometime mid 2007.

This is not that important but interesting.
Sony is currently trading at 42.83.
Nintendo is at 32.50.
Doesn't matter much but it is just as important as the percentage change.

With Sony stock at its low point, NOW would be the time to buy Sony as several of 'us' feel that they will come up on top.
Buy buy buy!

why do you state the dumb obvious, pixelator, when there's one thing that makes the PSP look that much better - they survived without needing a price-cut to survive the holiday season. Remember that stupid argument.
And don't bother trying to go ranting on about this. Remember what I said - the PSP didn't need a price-cut, because it'll cheapen their image and ruin their bottom line on PSP development. And guess what, just like your dumb Wifi DS argument, another year has come and pass, and you still look like a fanboy idiot with your 500 posts. I was right about the DS wifi, and I was right about the PSP price point. They didn't need a price cut, and at least the Sony stock wasn't hammered, which I'm sure would've happened if they did dumb moves like cutting the PSP price. And thank god as well, cause I own the stock on both Sony and Nintendo, and actually made a bit on Sony. or are you go one ranting that I DON'T OWN a PSP? All I can say is that with 500 posts on this site, you couldn't add a real bit of wisdom.

I think this will be the year that the PSP finally turns around.

It's like asking Lexus and Coach to make it cheaper so that more people will buy their stuff. Why in the world would this PSP - touted as a portable in a different market - would ever want to cater to the cheap people?!

Criticize on what's really dumb (UMD movies, library competing directly against PS2), and praise them on what they really did right (PSOne emu, price stability)

Short Sony's stock! It can only go down from here.
