Random study #1257625 -- PS3 to lead consoles
2010: 75 million consoles worldwide. Is it possible for the PS3 to garner such numbers, as given in a report titled "The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming" by a research firm based in Dublin? It almost seems that this research company took the install base of the PS2, which is approximately 105 million units, and slashed it by 25%. A little higher, but whatever. It makes you think, though. We're pretty sure Sony isn't going to cut the price of their new console this year -- maybe the 2007 holiday season. Even so, that's a lot of units to move in three years, especially with the late release in PAL regions as well as the install base being procured by the 360. Call it, fellas. Is this study bunk or is relying on the install base of the prior console a decent basis for constructive market research?

75 million consoles may be pushing it... for 2010. I believe the 105 million PS2 consoles sold has solidified Sony's position in the gaming scene, regardless of the lackluster PS3 launch. The Playstation brand name is formidable and won't soon be overcome. That being said, the Xbox 360 has, and the Wii will, take a chunk out of Sony's market share. Also, the BluRay format is risky due to the cheaper HD DVD alternative, and the prospect of HD movie downloads (proven to be a possible "format winner" via Xbox Live). I say 50 million PS3s, 30 million 360s, and 30 million Wiis by 2010. Maybe by 2012 we'll see upwards of 80 million PS3s. Just look at the current state of the PS2, still going strong and probably will be the leading console going all the way into 2008. If Sony can develop the PS3 market like they did with the PS2, be prepared for huge Sony numbers.

I think 75 million is hopeful at best for the PS3 or the Xbox 360. I can see it with the Wii if they manage to break out of their "we've only got good 1st party games" stigma. They just need to do a DS-repeat.
The PS isn't going to be the exclusive (timed or otherwise) juggernaut it once was. The real question for the PS3 is going to be "how important are the few exclusives it has"?

thats means sony has to sell 1.5 Million PS3s every month untill 2010... not happening.

You cant compare the market from the PS2 era to today’s, back then the only competition was the not so great debut console from Microsoft. it had all the games and all the fan base AND wasn’t short on supply.
once PS3 production picks up and they go live in Europe they are definitely gonna move a lot of consoles, especially next Christmas! I’m pretty confident they will hit 75m by 2010!

I don't think the PS3, 360, or Wii will sell 75 million consoles.

I don't think the PS3, Wii, or 360 will end up selling 75 million consoles by 2010.

Not with the way the PS3 is performing. My friend got one for Xmas and we were playing it, it was for like 45 minutes, and the thing just made a loud noise, something sorta made a crunching noise, and the thing was done. He returned it to the store and got a 360. Also, 360 has most of the good games coming out in 2007. I am not even close to a fanboy, Im just saying the facts. Sony needs to really step it up and dole out some huge cash to secure big titles for PS3.

totally out of the post... In the rest of the world (ok... just Mexico), the ps3 is still being sold in grey market from $1000 to $1500,and its not that hrd to find, the wii can be found just about anywhere, but at an official prize of $450 (reaches up to $500, wich is just too much for an overrated xbox), and the 360 ranges from $450-500.
What could be the prizes around the world?

really? kinda like the time I bought my 360, we got it home and pluged it in and the room got really dark.. The 360 started glowing and I started to hear satanic verses echoing through the halls of my house! My friend tried to turn it off but was thrown against the wall. I went to check him but he wasnt moving, and blood was begining to trickle out of his ears.
I knew right there that I had to kill it... kill it or be killed...I won..barely
No really, I would believe you if it wernt for your anti-sony posts of the past.. If you're going to make stuff up at least make it exciting! y'know, throw in a plot twist here and there..
Oh by the way, I do own all 3 consoles and I like them all ^^ Only games I have for the 360 are gears and dead rising.. only games i feel that are worth buying, seeing how I can get the rest on the PS3 or PC (without the risk of freezing [3 times now] or disk read error [2 times on GOW])

Sony might be able to *SHIP* 75 million consoles by 2010, but I really doubt they'll all get sold.
1) It took 6 years for Sony to sell 100 million PS2s. By that same token, they would sell 50 million PS3s in 3 years, except...
2) PS3 has debuted at a price twice that of the PS2. Using my crude form of "math", I'll cut the install-base in half, 25 million units by 2010. Significant price cuts could bump this up to 28 million.
3) Of course, with competing platforms already on the market there are probably about 4 million people who will instead buy either a Wii or Xbox 360 in order to obtain that must-have exclusive like Gears or Zelda.
All-in-all, I predict 26 - 30 million PS3s sold by 2010. Not bad.

Hey tyler, you have a defective xbox 360. go get a new one before you start complaining. The things ive heard about the ps3 are way worse than anything that ive heard of happening to the 360. The worst i've heard about the 360 is it overheating and crashing after it cools off.
I have heard of a ps3 causing a FIRE from it getting so hot. Somethings amiss there. they delay release 3 times, and they cant fix an overheating problem. SAD.
Oh, and about the 75 million by 2010......dream on sony. drop the price to $100 and ill contemplate buying a ps3.
The wii and 360 will be tied for the console war, or be close, and they probably wont even hit 75 mill. by 2010.
Babyface @ Jan 4th 2007 7:01PM
Man, ryab (ryan?) blundell, you seem to be hearing a lot. I heard that you can get blind from masturbating....
I have two friends who bought 360s. Both had to replace them by now, one of them even replaced it for a second time about 3 weeks ago (not because he didn't like the color - they just broke down). OK, they got first-generation units, but so are the current PS3s.
On the other hand another friend of mine got himself a PS3 on his holiday trip to the states, and it's working quietly and happily ever since (fingers crossed).
And just to throw in my opinion about the actual topic: This study is total crap. I also believe the Playstation brand will still prevail, but certainly not as massive as that. 75 millions seems completely lunatic to me.
Tyler @ Jan 5th 2007 7:24AM
@ryab blundell
PS3 never gets really hot for me, and for overheating and causing fires, please.. Seeing how the media is all on the anti-sony bandwagon, any reports of PS3-induced fires would spread like well, wild fire
I have yet to have my PS3 shut down on my ONCE nor have I heard any other official complaints about shutting down or overheating. Far too easy for a M$ fanboy to come in here and spread false shit because they it makes them feel superior..
But hey, if you have any evidence to back your claims I'll be happy to read them.. But if you don't, don't bother trying to slander anything, it just makes you look stupid.
PS3. Serious Buisness.
