1 million!

Here's a number for fanboys of all faiths to chew on: 1,000,000.
Despite launch day woes, blu-ray diode issues, sky-high prices and a world hell-bent on kicking them while they were down, Sony somehow managed to ship 1 million PS3s to North America by year-end.
Nice.
Some congratulations for Sony have been a long time coming.

yeah 1 million shipped, not sold. all over america they are collecting dust on shelves. A really bad sign for sony.
And you fanboys can say what you like this is 100% fact and cannot be denied.
Motoi @ Jan 8th 2007 9:40PM
Actually boney, you're forgetting the fact that PS3 sales have been more successful than both the PS and PS2 launch sales. Consider that for a second.
Adam @ Jan 8th 2007 9:57PM
I don't see how this is a reported "congratulations". After I read the link.. I found this out
- Sony only sold 197,000 units launch day. They forecasted 400,000
- Sony annouced 2 million would ship by the end of 2006, but only 1 million did
So, a million shipped (not sold) is great, but nowhere near why Sony wants to be. They have to get out of a huge hole right now. And, BTW, not releasing new PS3 titles right now isn't helping. No one is going to buy a $600 console to play ported sport titles.
Dylan Neild @ Jan 8th 2007 10:06PM
Would be all the more impressive if it wasn't supposed to have been 2M...
Dirk @ Jan 8th 2007 10:19PM
How was it better than PS2 launch that sold 900,000 consoles in Japan the first weekend...
Tyler @ Jan 8th 2007 10:26PM
Funny, I've seen a hell of alot more 360's sitting on shelves than PS3's... Hell I havnt seen 1
VJ @ Jan 8th 2007 10:36PM
Funny how the xbots bashed Sony for its launch, when Sony had a much better launch than the failure that was 360 launch!
Willie @ Jan 8th 2007 10:57PM
It is funny the difference between Sony and Microsoft. One compay is out to rip you off while one gives you a great deal. The $600 is by far the best deal yet. Imagine if you were to try and get a 360 with the same specs and accessories. The 360 would cost more than a $1,000. So for a Microsoft fanboy to sit here and say Sony has problems, I think they should take a look at their company in which they put up on TOO high a pedastal; Bill Gates is smiling while you continue to make him the richest man on the planet. They are nickel and diming every Microsoft owner.
PS3 $600 you get in a 5 year life span cycle: Free Network, Blu-Ray, 60GB, HDMI, wireless internet, Rechargeable Controller.
Now...to get a 360 with the same specs in a 5 year life span: $400 for the system, $250 for five years of network, HD-DVD $200, Larger Hard drive 100GB $120, Wireless adapter $100, HDMI (who knows) $50 being generous, and rechargeable batteries $40. The grand total is $1160. How can Microsoft fanboys justify a comment from Microsoft saying they will just have to pay to upgrade.
I loved how Microsoft constantly said 1080P is not that important. Now they want to add it. I am just sure if you want to use it, you will need to buy a new HDMI port. I wish Sony would create commericals based on this information. It is surprising how many people buy the 360 and don't understand how much more money you have to put into the system.
OfficerJeffery @ Jan 8th 2007 11:02PM
Funny how the PS and MS fanboys argue on which one's better, while I'm sitting here content with my Wii that had one of the best launches in history and sold around 2 million.
*stroke*
Dirk @ Jan 8th 2007 11:08PM
You know Willie that had it before the PS3 and you don't need HDMI for it...1080p that is.
Mr BoomStick XL @ Jan 8th 2007 11:14PM
Yes that's GREAT, if your a Sony SUCK A$$!! It's a shame that this story mis-leads everyone to think that Sony is saved!! Well guess what, they may have shipped 1 million but where are they?? I'll tell you, there on the store shelfs because no one wants to pay $651.16 after tax and not even get a bloody game with it!! List en I have ALL 3 systems and VERY happy that I do but this is in no way a possitive shot in the arm for Sony, so don't get it all twisted!!
Dominic @ Jan 8th 2007 11:26PM
oh yeah and HaHa, you can also take one in the ass from microsoft cause as you can see, the ps3 is selling better than the 360 if you compare time periods, despite the shortages last year, they were obtainable, just watch as the PS3 tags that little puss console you call a "xbox" "360" and a "wii" cause what can you offer on 360 besides gears of war and halo? hm.....yeah
Mr BoomStick XL @ Jan 8th 2007 11:27PM
WOW #10 are you a Sony Rep?? That has to be the MOST one sided attack on MS I have EVER read!! Listen dude, the BS3 is a GOOD system and I use that term VERY loosely mind you. The Wii is an EXCELLENT system and the 360 is a GREAT system with TONS of games to play at launch and to this day!! Nothing but three games in the next 3-4 months would possibly sell a $600.00 plus sstem to the Non-DieHard Gamers of the world!! Those are Motor Storm, Virtua Fighter 5 and Tekken:DR. Past that the BS3 is in REAL trouble!! Though those games are going to be really fun Sony will not lure the masses to a system that doubles your current car payment.
And please do not give us that crap of paying for LIVE, $4.33 a month for the service you get is peanuts!!
How about not being a silly fanboy and own ALL 3 systems like me so you can play the exclusives and just be happy!!! Game on dude!!
BklynKid @ Jan 8th 2007 11:33PM
No, they first announced 4 million which they then changed to 2 million but ended up with only 1 million. Yea, congratulations Sony.
Oki @ Jan 8th 2007 11:33PM
I'm with adam, i own a ps3, i've beating carbon, fall of resistance, almost complete with full auto 2, i havent found much intrest in the other games, need more releases i dont think theres gonna be one worth spending 60 bucks till march
josh @ Jan 8th 2007 11:41PM
ummm SHIPPING is not the same as SELLING. Just thought i'd throw that out there.
matjet @ Jan 9th 2007 12:47AM
There probably isn't much point saying anything as it won't be heard over all the microdog slobber, but ill mention, Sony said/were supposed to/ expected to sell 2m worldwide. Sony was hoping to sell 1m in NA and 1m else where. They have obviously achieved the first goal, now we will wait and see how many they sold elsewhere(mostly japan) and where they are compared with the total worldwide 2m mark.
the "people", if they can be called that, whom repeat each other in saying " Sony lied about selling 2m and they only sold 1m; Sony sucks!", are only showing how little they know.
Khamikazi @ Jan 9th 2007 12:56AM
Makes you wonder, how many of the ones that actually sold were put on eBay and are still looking for a home. Poor things.
And you know they dont include returns when they actually do mention sold stuff. So then you have more that arent even actually being used.
Im still looking for the good news though.
alienclay @ Jan 9th 2007 1:26AM
*sigh*
lets wait until we get some NPD data and compare sell through rates for the ps3 vs. ps2 and xbox360 given the same amount of time after launch. having units on the shelf, esp. after consumermas drains the credit on many a would be buyer dosent mean they are not moving, just that supply is catching up with demand. that's a good thing. sony is a major CE company and they know more about building things like this than microsoft. the shortages in 360 we saw last year may have had a lot to do with MS pulling from so many suppliers it dosent have direct control over. (MS never made a profit on selling the original xbox,.... never, and they are still delayed on the 95nm chips where the cell is already 95nm)
and about 20% of day one ps3 consoles were on ebay.i'll go on a limb and say half of the greedy bastards got what they deserve. i didn't buy an ebay ps3 because i refused to reward someone +$100 or more for scalping like that. i bought my ps3 last week at target by walking in, the only way i would have done so. and used that 100 for carbon, an hdmi cable and the memory card reader. they will be used, either the scalpers will end up using them or they will start selling them at a loss over the next couple of weeks. i don't know too many people who let $500-600 pieces of high tech collect dust like that.
if wille were a sony rep he would have said 10 year life span. his 1120 is a bit much, but even a conservitive look by anyone can tell you the ps3 is the better value hardware wise.
and Dirk, it not just about being able to put out 1080p over componet, it's about the tv being able to accept it onve said cables. my tv can do 1080p, but ONLY if you use the hdmi cable. a lot of tvs are like that.
as for my PERSONAL choice for buying a ps3, i'm not a FPS shooter fan. i'm not interested in GOW or halo3. the built in BD player and psp conectivity were a better long term investment for me than what MS or nintendo was offering me. and i don't have the money to buy (or find in the wii's case) 1550 in consoles (when you add tax and second controllers) just to play "exclusives" my time and money is limited, and for me, i know i made the best one.
(did i pizz enough people off now ~_^)
Brian James @ Jan 9th 2007 1:50AM
$600 for a htpc would be a good deal. The PS3 is NOT a htpc. It is a gaming system that does a *decent* job at playing high def movies.
The VAST majority of people don't want to spend $600 for a GAMING system. Microsoft was wise to give users a CHOICE to upgrade to HD-DVD movies.
I bought a 360 because I wanted only to game on it. The fact that you can rent movies and buy television series on it is a luxury, but it certainly isn't what made me but down $400.
Oh, and I've had it for over a year while die hard sony fanboys were suffering through patiently waiting for their monolith to even nail a release date, while Sony CONTINUOUSLY LIED to their fan base.
Anyone calling Microsoft's launch worse than Sony's needs to open their eyes and recognize the unbearable truth that Sony has treated their loyal consumers (myself, formerly, included) like crap, and it's comming back to bite them in their butt.
One million shiped, I doubt even half of those have been sold.
Tyler @ Jan 9th 2007 2:04AM
@15
I do own all 3 systems and think your comment is BS..
Wii is not pushing any new technology what-so-ever LEDs and motion sencing supported with SD cards for memory..big deal.. not to mention the only game worth buying at the moment is Zelda..
360 - much better seeing how it is graphically impressive with Gears of War.. but other than that, like what Willie said, comes without Wifi capabilites, without High Definition quality movie player, games come in DVD format only, not to mention it eats the games if tipped over. (damn cd tray..) Reguardless of that, it's a fairly good system and I'm happy I bought it.
PS3 - Great system, so-so games, but easily has the greatest potential out of all 3 them. I'm more excited about the upcoming games than i have been for any other system. (over 20 i'm looking forward too) I'd list all the nice features, but i'm sure you're all sick of hearing them
Wii - Zelda, Wii Sports
360 - Gears of War, Dead Rising
PS3 - Resistance
(only exclusives that I felt was worth the 'killer ap' title..kinda even, dont you think?)
Kojima rocks @ Jan 9th 2007 4:35AM
And the article forgot to add...say 80% of the PS3 sold in US, double that for japan you have 1.5m consoles - while the 360 sold that many with a WORLDWISE launch. Add to that the fact that in just 6Months the PS3 will have caught up with the 360 in terms of games, in spite of its head start.
fender419 @ Jan 9th 2007 6:32AM
10.4 million
That's how many Xbox 360s have shipped. PWNED.
jkdoug @ Jan 9th 2007 9:50AM
My wife got me an Xbox 360 for Christmas, though she knows I really wanted a PS3. She couldn't find a PS3 in any of our eight local PS3 retailers, and the 360 was cheaper. I spent as much as she spent on the system buying accessories to bring the system up to my playable specs, and that doesn't even include the HD-DVD drive.
I am having trouble getting excited about too many of the 360 games available, mostly sports games or just crap games. I had an easier time finding fun games for the old Xbox than I am now for the 360. If only the backwards compatibility were a little better, then maybe I could play the Destroy All Humans 2 I got for Christmas.
The worst part is that I had to exchange the system after one week because the damned disc reader died a horrible death (and almost took out a $60 game disc, too). Thank goodness for that awesome Best Buy warranty!
I admit I'm having some fun with the 360, but I'm still having network difficulties and finding too many morons that want to gank me in every game I try to play online. I paid money for the ability to play online, and I don't need idiots getting in my face. *sigh*
Here's to saving up for the PS3!
Earl @ Jan 9th 2007 9:57AM
Yeah the 360 does nickel and dime consumers ($100 for a wireless adapter??!!!?).
That still doesn't change the fact that $600 is too much to pay for a GAMING CONSOLE. Sure it plays BRD movies and can run Linux, but guess what? The "Playstation" name is recognized as a GAMING CONSOLE, not a DVD player, or a BRD player, or even better: a Linux machine. Majority of people will buy a PS3 for GAMES.
Which is why the PS3 is not selling out everywhere. $600 to play games is not worth it. I will own both the 360 (premium pack) and PS3 one day, when the prices drop to $300 each.
This is like buying a Hummer, or BMW to drive to work everyday. It is a "status symbol" for some people, but for myself a car is meant to drive from point A to point B. So I will never own a luxury car, not because I can't, but because I don't nee to prove my "status" to anyone. Same thing with the PS3, right now it is more of a cutting edge "status symbol" than anything else. When it becomes a resonably priced gaming console, let me know. I will be first in line to get one.

The Xcessory Box 360 didn't even come close with their launch ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The numbers are already up to 1.5 million SOLD in only two territories US and Japan. The Xcessory Box 360 is in 37 countries and only SHIPPED 10,000,000; Now that's a failure if I ever saw one!
Congrats Sony on the Sony PS3PEAT!!!!!!!

@8 of course you have seen more 360 they have been out for over a year 10million + people have a 360.
just for the record my local wal mart has 4 playstation 3s
erac3rx @ Jan 9th 2007 12:03PM
The comments talking about 'all they did was ship a million, not sell them' are pointless. Microsoft has been trumpeting their '10.4 million shipped' at CES nonstop, when we know they haven't sold over 10. Fact is they can't do the calculations on how many have actually sold, other companies do that. So they go with the shipping milestone.
All of this talk about no one buying PS3s, 'they are sitting on the shelves everywhere!'... they are still selling. For all the supposed places with giant stakcs of PS3s on the shelves, there are plenty of stores I've been to lately with none in stock (best buy and CC yesterday) versus the few that happen to have them (I saw 3 at Target two nights ago). In my eyes it's a great deal at $500 or $600. When they drop the price, which I'm sure they'll do if it does quit selling briskly, it will be a great deal to everyone.
All I have to say is that I've had a 360, PS3, and Wii since launch. 360 has been okay, but lacking in original games thus far in my eyes. I've probably played Street Fighter II Turbo and Halo2 more on it than anything else, which does not speak well about what's available. Gears was a lot of fun, but WOW was it short. I really enjoyed Resistance (the fact that it had a story which GoW sorely lacked was nice) but it could have been better. One thing I will say is that it is hard not to be excited about 2007 on the PS3, and the fact that the network is free is great. My personal take is that the Wii loving will wear off quickly, 360 will continue to put out strong, if unorginal titles, and PS3 will begin to see some amazing stuff toward the end of the year. Let's quit with the fanboyism and enjoy what we've got!

Blahasaurs.. Yes because I have seen the small reports like 20 PS3s sitting at Circut City in a low income small town like San Francisco. Or the fact that they have 5 PS3s sitting in teh gamestop in Union Square anotehr down on its luck area of San Francisco. Yes and of course the fact that if you want one they are readily available online from Best Buy.com and apparantely even Amazon.con has tehm available.
the Ebay prices for the PS3 are actually lower than retail and the Wii prices can actually run higher than the 360. BTW I own a PS3 I got in Ebay for 320 dollars. there are some good things about it but it is not as good as the 360 and no were near as fun as the Wii. I got it figuring I will get FF13 for it and MGS4 but am under no allusions that this is a good launch. Nintendo released 4 million WW and you can't find them anywhere. Sony released 1 million and you can find tehm easily.
NPD numbers for Decemeber are
Wii 1.3 million
360 1.2 million
PS3 600,000
jkdoug @ Jan 9th 2007 12:45PM
I'm not trading in the 360 for a PS3 simply because I tossed the original packaging for all the accessories (still have the box for the system itself, knowing that I'll need to exchange it a few more times as it breaks down on me), and I'm not going to lose that investment. (Selling the accessories just isn't worth the loss.)
The upshot of having so few good games for the 360 is that I'll save money on games! More for the PS3/HDTV funds. :)
lewi @ Jan 9th 2007 1:06PM
You people don’t have a clue, Sony has a lot more tricks up their sleeve for the PS3. Yes there is a shortage of games and Yes it is an expensive console but with rest of the world release, a pretty much expected price drop next Christmas, coupled with some major titles projected to release about then, they are going to catch up on the wii and the 360 very soon. New MGS anybody? Resident Evil people? just wait....

Japan has sold: 385,831 Ps3 consoles up till Dec 24, 2006 according to M-Create.
Sales have also been rising for the past 3 weeks. And is about 6x higher than Xbox360 sales on the latest info. Of course, PSP is about 2x the PS3 sales, Wii is about 2x the PSP sales, and DS Lite is about 2x Wii sales. (Note: All from 1 week's sales data, the last available, not totals)
Blahasaurs @ Jan 9th 2007 4:39PM
you know everyone keeps saying that's it's just shipped not sold. Of course they haven't sold 1 million but you seriously doubt that they haven't sold majority of them? you see the small reports of 2-30 PS3's just sitting around in 1-10 stores a state mostly in middle-america or mid to low income parts. say there are 30 PS3's (which is impossible since about 70% of all stores selling PS3's don't have more then 20) lying around in 40 stores per state that's still more then 80% of the PS3's selling. Hell you can up the number to 100 stores per state. Nickle and dime the other 5,000 stores with under 10 PS3's but hell i'd just throw out a guess and say atleast 700k PS3's sold (non-resellers) but what does it matter anyone against Sony will just say "ha only 700k the so in conclusion suck it Wii60 people. /wave to Wii and /wave to 360 fans
