And the Emmy goes to... the SIXAXIS! [update 1]
With teary eyes, the SIXAXIS approached the podium confidently, accepted its reward, gave its speech (with a special shout out to Phil, Kaz, and Ken) and proceeded to do a motion-sensing victory dance. Yeah, that's right. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored the SIXAXIS with an Emmy. A Technology and Engineering Emmy. This reward goes hand in hand with the announcement Sony gave, declaring one million PS3's have hit US shelves.Jack Tretton, CEO of SCEA, added this to all the glowing attention the PS3 was getting: "The overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim for PS3 is testament of the platform's strength and the industry's desire for a true next-generation entertainment system. The full potential of this powerful machine has yet to be realized. What you've seen so far is just a taste of what will be on the table for 2007 and years to come." Even though the consumer demand is in question, you have to admit, there is a lot in store for this awesome console. Like games. We'd like games.
Anyway, for being called a "gimmick" or "stealing other technology at the last minute" and "thrown together", we don't exactly see other controllers getting Emmy's. Not saying they don't deserve them, but seriously, the controller's got to have something to offer if it's getting a freakin' Emmy. What're your thoughts? Oh, just as a side note, anyone else notice you can actually see through the SIXAXIS' outer shell? That's mind-boggling. Maybe that's why it won (sarcasm).

That's one hell of a link

You forgot to close a tag or something...and yes! I did notice the outer shell was semi transparent. Made me want to add in all kinds of LEDs and stuff :P

Hmm, not sure what's up with that link. Wasn't there when I finished typing it o_O. Trying to repair it now.

Wii Remote has:
* PROPER motion sensing (NOT JUST TILT)
* An Infra-Red Camera (i.e POINTER)
* Built-In Rumble (Sony said Sixaxis could not include this)
* Built-in speaker ( A FIRST in joypads)
* Built-in Memory. (you can store 10 miis on every Wii remote and take them to a friend's house).. ANOTHER FIRST!
yet PS3 wins an emmy because of it's "innovative" motion sensing ability. Who paid for this emmy?
Let's not even mention that all these lauded motion sensing abilities have yet to be seen putting on an actual "performance" that changes gameplay on the PS3 in any way even close to what the Wii has done.
Isn't a performance required for an Emmy? Or do they now give emmys to actors who might one day in the future maybe give a good performance? Seems what it takes to get an emmy these days is slipping.
Piznoup @ Jan 9th 2007 12:55PM
Giving an emmy to the wii-mote would be like giving a emmy to an electric car without breaks. Sure it works great, but when it crashes and breaks a few TV's, if just kinda falls off the nomination list.

Ah so your problem with the wiimote is that it's sooo much fun it could result in injury. Hmm yeah I see your point. Better to stick with the PS3 where you're nice and safe from any possible injuries that could occur from an over abundance of fun.
CK @ Jan 9th 2007 1:34PM
Holy crap - why do you fanboys repeatedly make the same comments on this shit? I know what 90% of the comments for a news item are going to be before I click on the link.
Feeling insecure about something perhaps? You're like a bunch of little kids in the schoolyard.
Grow the hell up. It's way past boring.

More awards -
Sony's PlayStation 3 has also picked up:
The CES Best of Innovations Award for 2007
PC World's 20 Most Innovative Products Award
Sound and Vision's Editor's Choice Award
Digital Innovation Award from the Digital
Entertainment Group.
Straight from the link that Joystiq gave.

Built in memory is not new. It may be used differently, but it certainly is not new in gamepads. Previously it was used to store mapped button layouts.
Tristan @ Jan 9th 2007 2:51PM
I think the Wii should of gotten it. Sony did steal the idea from them.
Geoff @ Jan 9th 2007 2:54PM
Sorry I love Playstation as much as the next guy, but really the Sixaxis is not the best controller. In terms of button placement I'd say the award goes to the 360, and in terms of motion sensor technology, hands down the award is for the Wiimote.
Now if there was an award for cellprocessor power the award would no doubt goto the PS3. This would be like the Wii winning the award for the best cell processor. It wouldn't make any sense. Or the 360 winning an award for quietest system.
I understand that Nintendo couldn't recieve the award because they did not show up to CES, but even the the 360 should have won. The button layout is much smoother, and the rumble feature is a must-have nowadays. Lets face it guy, nobody is buying the PS3 for its "motion sensing tech", theya re buying it for its power. Any person with a great lvoe for motion tech will buy a Wii.
Anyways thats just my 2-cents. BTW like I said before I love my playstation, as well as my Wii, and 360.
NATO_Duke @ Jan 9th 2007 3:41PM
Yeah, love my ps3 too, but its controller is nowhere near as nice as the 360 controller. The triggers are sticky and awkward as heel - and its strangely light feeling to boot. Just the simple button placement on xbox's and the solid feel make it a much nice controller. So, add one more person saying the ps3 is nice and all - but its controller is hardly great.
BTW: Those who haven't used both controllers for more than 5 minutes really shouldn't even speak on the issue.
wiibouy @ Jan 9th 2007 5:58PM
wait a second everysingle thing the sicaxis does was a nintendo inovation
d-pad=nintendo
anolog=nintendo
motion sencing =nintendo
thing inovated by nintendo and aint included in the sixaxis
rumble pak
true 3d motion and pointer
speaker
memory
so if everything on the sixaxis was a nintendo inovation shouldnt nintendo get the emmy even if it is a sixaxis controller
ten year old controller based around a d-pad gets a reward THATS JUST PRICLESSLY SILLY
Pulse @ Jan 9th 2007 6:00PM
Well everyone is entitled to thier opnion, after several years of playing with the small PS2 comfortable controller, I find the 360 controller unorthodox, and always hated its button layout, theres too many for my liking and it confuses me as to which I am pressing sometimes, if you're looking for a vibrator, there are certain types of shops that sell it, go find one vibrating loosers, as for the rest of us, we don't need the sensual vibrations running through our fingers to turn us on as we play a match of gears of war on Xbox Live. Motion sensitivity will do us just fine, and if you wanna talk about comfort, I find the Wii controller to be more comfortable then 360's.
I do admit though, had Nintendo been there, they would have picked it up instead. Awards don't go to people who don't show up, and they don't go to battery drinking vibrators of the last generation either.
Veridicum @ Jan 9th 2007 6:50PM
Oh by the way, Nintendo won in the same category. Sony is just louder. So the opinions of the poster of this article don't mean anything in the end. Here's the proof.

Ciaran @ Jan 9th 2007 6:52PM
It's just a PS2 controller with dualshock replaced with tilt sensing!
Although it's nice that's its small enough to be able to do that all wirelessly, but it's too small for people's hands...

I was going to respond, but there's no way I could put it better than Geoff.

Frankie @ Jan 9th 2007 11:04PM
LOL at Sony.
Damn, I don't know who to fell bad for, Sony or at PS3fanboy.com. You guys should be PISSED at them for making you look like fools.

From engadget:
"Séamus at Hydrapinion did some legwork and discovered that, while Sony had won an Emmy for Technology and Engineering, it wasn't for the SIXAXIS. Instead, Christine Chin from NATAS confirmed that Sony's Dual Shock as well as Nintendo's D-Pad (NES pad?) won "for the development of the generation of controllers that followed the classic joysticks." Oops! You know what they say happens when you assume ..."
whoops... The SIXAXIS actually didn't get ANYTHING at all. It was the dual shock... lol... wtg ps3fanboy.
Brian James @ Jan 10th 2007 2:11AM
Don't be angry at PS3 Fanboy, be angry at Sony! Sony... you messed up... AGAIN.

I know that you guys are hardcore PS3 fanboys that can´t take any negative about the PS3, but the SIXAXIS never won...
Even Joystiq have updated their article, is it so hard to chew in the bad apple and do the same?
