Blu-ray discs to add a little something extra
Props to our little-sister site, PSP Fanboy, for their eagle-eyed scoop on a potential cool new feature of Blu-ray movies. "Sony's David Bishop announced that future Blu-Ray movies from Sony Pictures Entertainment will include portable files that can be transferred to laptops and other portables."
What a neat little treat. Being able to easily and seamlessly send a Blu-ray movie from my PS3 to my PSP may force me to bring my PSP out of retirement. No real word on availability or on how the whole process (including DRM) might actually work.

One thing..... and why would you want to watch a 1080p movie on a PSP?
Colin @ Jan 10th 2007 9:34PM
L,
It wouldn't be a 1080p movie - since obviously the PSP cannot display 1920x1080p. It would clearly be a downrezed version.
And as long as I can copy it to my psp via the PS3 as opposed to having to buy a BR pc drive, then I'm alllll for this. Especially if they carry it over to TV episodes released on BR.

This would be a killer feature if they really do this. I would imagine it would be really easy to include a PSP formatted version that would take up next to no space on the Blu-ray. It could even be a DRM-laden managed copy, but the simplicity of just copying the movie over would be worth it, as long as it is no more complex than plugging in your PSP to your PS3 and selecting 'copy'.

This is precisely the type of functionality that Sony needs to set itself apart from the competition. I might not watch a whole film this way unless I was traveling but all the extra features would make for good portable viewing.
L @ Jan 11th 2007 12:59AM
yes thats my point but
I buy a Blu-Ray/Hd-dvd To watch it in 1080p nothin less.....maybe itsjust me but i don,t think this will catch on
Jason B. @ Jan 11th 2007 5:23AM
L, I don't think you are seeing the big picture (pun intended). It will be for portable viewing when you are on the go. I doubt many people want to carry a high def tv and blu-ray player with them everywhere they go or even buy an expensive blu-ray equipped laptop.
Nick James @ Jan 11th 2007 7:28AM
Wow, way to miss the point here, L. You buy the movie on Blu-ray so you can watch it in High Def. And as a bonus, the video is provided in PSP-friendly (iPod-friendly?) format GRATIS. As a bonus.
You don't buy the Blu-ray Disc JUST so you get a portable 480p version for your PSP.
...just.. no. That's a stupid idea.
Ray @ Jan 11th 2007 9:36AM
No. 7 Nick james is on the money. Ofcourse you buy BluRay to get an awesome looking HD movie; but the idea of an already decoded and ready to transfer MPEG4 PSP version or like wise would be great for road/commuting trips. It's like buying an huge SUV and finding out it also has a nice little Scooter stored in the hatch area.

"..will include portable files that can be transferred to laptops and other portables."
Whoa boys. There was nothing in that statement that suggests they are portable movie files! For all we know, they could just be trailers or equivalents of those stupid "PC Extras" that used to pop up if you put a regular DVD in your DVD-ROM years ago.
winky sams @ Jan 11th 2007 10:58AM
yeah...ok...blue ray still blows so does th psp. try again sony!

Too little too late. Looks like the iPhone is about to encroach big time on the PSP and it'a portable video territory.
SemiLOOSE @ Jan 11th 2007 12:50PM
it said some files.. not whole movie..
prolly some trailers or some shit..

If you really want to dust off your PSP, get Dark Alex's custom firmware 3.03 and use your own PS1 iso's. My PSP hasn't seen this much play since ... ever! I went ahead and ordered a stronger battery, cause playing through metal gear solid and parasite eve requires more than the measly battery life of 1800mAh.

Iphone?
the thing that costs as much as a ps3 and will most probably hit the floor more often then?

Mylo is more interesting then that!
