Wow! Sony unleashes the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo... soon
Are you finding it all too easy to fill up that 60GB hard-drive, but don't feel like buying a new 2.5" dealie with insane amounts of memory? Wait until (on or before) February 19th, because that's when Sony will be releasing the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. Well, technically it's 7.35GB available. Just as an example, on this tiny little stick, one could put, let's say, the entire first season of Scrubs (albeit not HD) and slide it into the PS3 and instantly have a Scrubs-a-thon.This is great. With such memory being released by Sony, there are a lot of windows (no pun intended, Microsoftians) being opened. If piracy didn't exist, that is. Whatever. You can move a lot of stuff with this thing. About 20% of my music collection, even. What would you guys throw onto your PS3 with that much disposable memory?

You do know that this bugger will be $300 USD right?
Kspraydad @ Jan 19th 2007 2:16PM
Sorry...just to add a little more to this:
Unless you are using it for both your PSP and PS3 you could use 8GB CF cards for $139

Or...
Can't you just stream your stuff over wirelessly?

It'll drive down the price of the 4gb model soon, which is a plus. And, I'll be using it on my PSP. The PS3 doesn't warrant a purchase yet. It has some growing up to do.
mike @ Jan 19th 2007 3:08PM
Id much rather buy a 120GB HDD and put that in the PS3 for 1/2 of the price..
Lorderk @ Jan 19th 2007 4:40PM
Or couldn't you just buy an external hard-drive? 250GB for around $150?
That's what I have for my PS3...I just plug in my external hard-drive and I have 200GB worth of movies and music and pictures. Try doing that with a memory stick.
neonDog @ Jan 19th 2007 3:51PM
how is ur music collection over 35GB unless you have 1 metric ton of classical CDs that you ripped onto your PC. I mean a 2-4GB MP3 player does me fine for music LOL
JimyD @ Jan 19th 2007 5:19PM
Lorderk - thanks for the heads-up on that. I just received my PS3 and forgot about hooking up an external HDD. I guess that's what happens when you play too much Resistance.

PLEASE ANSWER!
I have a 4GB Memory stick Pro Duo which goes right to my PSP and have some 1 gig left of space. I was scare to place that on my PS3, does it go with it or do you need the memory stick adaptor? (didnt wanted to shove something that valuable lol)
alienclay @ Jan 20th 2007 2:13PM
you need the memory stick adapter. you can get offical sony or sandisk ones on ebay for $10 or less. i have 2
hey 8gig is almost as much as a dual layer dvd.
you could probably fit a lot of xbox 360 games on that.
problem solver @ Jan 19th 2007 9:38PM
ya u can toss it in hunter-x
epobirs @ Jan 19th 2007 11:29PM
8GB may seem like a lot now but the major flash producers already have 64Gb chips on their roadmap. (Thats 8GB in a single chip, BTW) This doesn't affect the PS3 by itself all that much since, as mentioned above, CF is much less expensive thanks to its greater size making it easy to stuff in many chips, but as the prices come down it adds value to the PSP.
Today, FRy's Electronics has a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for $80 after rebate. That, combined with the downloadable games via the PS3, makes the PSP much more interesting than it was when a 1GB stick commanded that same price.
Give it a year and that 8GB stick will be down to $100.

sorry neondog, but 35 gigs of music isn't very much at all, I've got around 200 gigs of the stuff on an NAT serv and it's all at 128 kbs mp3 or aac.
Maybe you just listen to top40 or something. :P
Nah, I respect tiny mp3 player, I've got a nano, a mini, and a sansa they are all great for popping a couple of artists onto and taking around for a bit.
Still how does only 500 to a thousand songs cut it for you?
Nightwolf @ Jan 21st 2007 11:50PM
This memory stick should come in handy with the PSone games that we hoped to come out very soon, like all the FF's games and Resident Evil's and all that good shit, Biatch!
Nightwolf @ Jan 21st 2007 11:54PM
Hey, who really wants to smash and kill those poofters that bag out the PS3
zorax @ Jan 22nd 2007 6:34AM
When the 8gb hits the stores, I'm finally picking up a 4gb memstick! ;)

I'll wait for the sandisk version. I like the blue sandisk cards since they supposedly have faster transfers.
