Xbox 360 gives up the ghost... again
My Xbox 360 has gone to console heaven. It happened fast. I don't think it felt any pain. It powered-up, began loading up the HD-DVD of Superman: The Movie and then came to a screeching halt (literally, it was screeching). Then it was on to the blinking lights of death. Goodbye, Xbox 360. I hardly new ya.Why am I wasting your valuable PS3 playtime telling you about the shameful existence of an Xbox 360 corpse in my home? I'm glad you asked:
- This is the second time this has happened to my Xbox 360! Yes, two have died under my care. I'll quote a post I wrote when my first Xbox 360 bit the bullet: "Never laugh at the less fortunate. I've never had a console problem in my life. I laughed at these stories of people going through 2, 3 and 4 defective Xbox 360s. Laugh I tell you! And not just a chuckle, but a deep, evil genius laugh. Well, who's laughing now? Touche, Mr. Gates." Touche indeed. So far my PS3 has worked perfectly. And I've heard no stories of mass PS3 failures.
- My Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is now a very expensive decoration. I've made a decent investment in HD-DVDs and they're all coasters for now. At least I have a few Blu-ray movies on hand that will allow me to continue living the sweet, sweet HD dream.
- Flame bait.

They're 'sending you' one?
So you are under warranty and you are getting a replacement on the spot?
Or is this swag given your blogger status?
Or are you paying for it like the rest of the 360 peons?
Do tell...
Jonathan Wood @ Jan 20th 2007 1:36PM
i'll buy your HD drive from you.
boney @ Jan 20th 2007 1:37PM
yeah i am sure you will be excited firing up your ps3 with the tons of exclusive launch games and the oh so exciting load times. give me a break
Kruegmeister @ Jan 20th 2007 2:04PM
I am still on my 1st "Launch" 360.
Knock on Wood, Fingers Crossed, etc.
Mine Does Lock Up sometimes, but still works.
@boney
Don't bash something you NO Experience with.
What Load Times? You don't know what you are talking about. Don't take "Facts" you read on the Internet and spout them off. Just because you read it on the Internet does not make it True.
My PS3 DOES NOT have long load times. It is No faster or slower than my 360. It is 1000x Quieter than my 360.
Also, have you never witnessed a Launch before. There wasn't Squat for the 360 Launch + Less than 5% of the XBox1 Games worked on it (Still true today).
My PS3 Plays the Select Few Launch Games well. Plus it Plays ALL the PS2 Games I have, It Plays all the PS2 Demo Discs I have. My EyeToy Works with it. My Logitech Wheel works with it. With the Pelican Adapter my Daughters Dance Pad will work with it. My PS2 Gamesaves moved over in a snap using the available adapter. It Cost me $100 to get my XBox1 Saves to My 360 and not all of them would come over. KOTOR Save was too big. Lego StarWars Save had no Option to Transfer to Memory. DOOM3 Save on the 360 said it was corrupt.
Yeah... I'm exited to fire up my PS3 too! No Systems will have that many Exclusives anymore. Which for me is a good thing cause I won't have to buy 3 systems any more to play all the games I want. I only need my PS3.
Hoffer @ Jan 20th 2007 2:06PM
I'm currently waiting for a coffin for my 360 as well. Last Saturday, I got the 3 red lights of death for the first time. I got my 360 January 1st, 2006. So, I'd had it just over a year. I was really worried MS wouldn't fix it for free, but they are.
I did call them last weekend and have yet to get my coffin. So, I'm thinking I'll be 360-less for about 2-3 weeks. That sucks!!
I do have a PS3, but have like no games for it. I've got 3 Blu-rays from Netflix. So, I'll probably watch them this weekend. Maybe play a little Zelda on my Wii as well. The 360 is my favorite of the 3 consoles and it will be missed during its time out.
sean @ Jan 20th 2007 2:36PM
my 360 disc trasy doesnt open it tries but doesnt for some reason. but once it finally does open it wont close it goes and and pops back out over and over again. its a piece of shit. and its not a launch console.
Yawar @ Jan 20th 2007 3:00PM
Point number 2 is just silly. Plug that sucker into your computer and you can still use those HD-DVDs.
Someone @ Jan 20th 2007 3:08PM
This is why I won't even consider buying an Xbox 360 until Microsoft releases a version that doesn't have inert heating and noise problems. The Zephyr version may have these problems resolved, but I would wait at least a month until it's released to see if it has widespread problems too. Some of you may laugh at the PS3, but at least it doesn't have this widespread problem.
Pulse @ Jan 20th 2007 3:17PM
Kike, explain this to me, what is the logic in having the games, if you have nothing to play it on :O Shock horror! Slapped in the face with intellect! What a low blow by me! And Pulse yet again takes the ribbon. :)
Besides, 360 needs something more then FPS, FPS, FPS to maintain other gamers interest, I'll definatly pick up a 360 when something other then a Halo / GOW, or Halo / GOW copy comes out. Oh, and when there are no more rings of death, I had enough trouble as it was with my dreaded PS2.
Aeris130 @ Jan 20th 2007 3:31PM
I usually don't question when "bad" news is being reported about MS/Sony/Nintendo, but...what is this? So your 360 has died? Yes?
Is this related to anything elese, like, a majority of 360's around the globe are giving up? Or that the cause for this has been revealed? Or...anything?
I mean, it's a 360. And it doesn't function any more. You're getting a replacement. And..I mean... I'm confused finding this on a good blog like ps3fanboy.
Azorean @ Jan 20th 2007 3:32PM

The 360 Backward Compatibility doesn't make those games looks worse than on the original Xbox at least...
The original Playstation 2 was a piece of crap too... and it didn't even have the decency to crap out during the warranty period... it waited...
In conclusion both Microsoft and Sony suck at making consoles.
Gabriel Gray @ Jan 20th 2007 4:38PM
I like all the consoles, and I cannot really claim a definite bias toward either one, though I can't afford a PS3 right now. Just wanted to start with that to avoid being called a 360 or Wii fanboy. Anyway, less hardware failures for the PS3 doesn't really prove anything when there aren't nearly as many in the consumer's hands. Maybe that's their strategy. PS2 was plagued by reports of hardware failure, and there were a lot on the market. I went through four PS2's in one week. I took them home, plugged them in, and they just wouldn't play any games or DVDs I put in. They played audio cds pretty well, though. I finally got a working one (PS2 #5), and I must say I'm having a grwat time with it. Compared to my PS2 situation, you've got it easy (unless yours broke out of warrantee). I've had a 360 from launch, and it still works perfectly. It sucks that people have to go through this sort of crap, but you can't judge a product that is so mass-produced for random people here or there who seem to have issues with them. All hardware is bound to have defects, especially when mass produced. I've seen three PS3's returned at my local EBgames, but I still have faith in the PS3. I expected PS3s to break, though I really wish I had the money for one anyway. I expected Wii's to break, as well, but not as often as the PS3, and until there is better availability for the PS3 and the Wii, I will expect there to be more brokem XBOX 360s than either of the other two.
soccerdrew17 @ Jan 20th 2007 4:46PM
I love how this PS3 Fanboy and there are so many non ps3 fans/fanboys/fangirls. How about everyone goes to their own fansite. PS3 can rag on 360 and wii cuz it wants too and so can the other systems.
Everyone is entitled to their own position, but this is getting ridiculous. If you want to show your hate then show it in a bashing way on your own fansite like these guys are doing.
Steve @ Jan 20th 2007 5:25PM
I did a lot of research lately between the 360 and PS3. The only thing the PS3 has going for it currently is fewer hardware failures than the 360. I've read tons of folks on the official xbox forums, teamxbox and the like with all sorts of hardware issues. Personally, I'm going to wait until the newer 360 model hits sometimes in the summer and possibly pick one up then. No way I'm investing in the current 360 hardware.
Diman @ Jan 20th 2007 5:42PM
Gabriel I'm calling your remarks about PS2 bull shit. I won't even take your word on the consoles failure to read DVDs, and i would like to see that massive list of reports of PS2 hardware launch failure, kthnxbie. My PS2 has been working for over 5+ years since 2001. All my friends PS2s still work. Yes at one point I did have some bad disk reading, but after just raising the laser and cleaning the lens everything worked prefect. That happened like a year ago. Yes all hardware have defects, but this much defects and with only 90 day warranty (for launch people), I beg to ask whether it's lousy engineering on Software company's part or an attempt to make money through repairs. Oh people are not returning PS3 because they are defected, but because they failed to sell them on eBay, those fools.
juan @ Jan 20th 2007 5:46PM
I am still on my 1st 360
Still on my First PS3 also but I don't agree with your "I'm excited when I turn on my PS3" as of right now, Iam a fanboy and all but thats the kind of remark that make us fanboys sound like our comments are complete baseless, because there is literary nothing on the PS3 However Iam certain that we will have some awsome titles on the future.

my 360 died when the warranty ran out. Microsoft never replaced it. Your lucky man.
im glad you posted this. i was thinking about buying another 360, but this is just the reminder i needed. This is not a secluded thing, it happens alot. i know about 10 people with busted 360's.
it really is a sad thing to see $500 go down the drain. i guess this is what MS calls next gen.
Ciaran @ Jan 20th 2007 6:46PM
I had to get mine replaced three times... very annoying. But I'm glad Microsoft are nice about it. My friend's year warranty was over but Microsoft still replaced it for free...
Though for the time I spent waiting on the 360's and phoning customer support and all the other kerfuffle, I can definitely say it was worth it.

If your 360/PS3 is shot that sucks but I'm not believing one more person that says so. It's just to damn easy to lie about it. I mean I've seen people post shit againts 360 on Joystiq and then a few weeks later I see that same person saying, "I'm on my fourth 360." Bullshit. Anyway I know I'm on a PS3 fanboy site so KUDOS to $ony on doing something right on not have to many cases of hardware failure. :) Now I just gotta get one of my PS360 wanna be friends to get a PS3 so I can give one a whurl, lol.
Malik @ Jan 21st 2007 12:04AM
The PS3 has fewer hardware failures because there are 10 times less of them to fail. It is rediculous to compare hardware failures of 10.4 million shipped consoles to 1.x million.
@Kruegmeister:
You bash someone about inexperience with the PS3 and claim yours is 1000 times quieter than the Xbox 360 while the truth of the matter is that the Xbox 360 in independant testing is only louder while sitting idle. The PS3 is louder when accessing the hard drive and playing media. The Wii is the loudest when playing media. http://www.pregamelobby.com/forum/view_console_loudness.htm
It is funny/hypocritical that you poke fun at other without experience whn the fool with the console knows the least about it.
Isn't it kind of odd that there is so little good to say about the PS3 on playstation.joystiq.com that the bloggers that work for the site have to post "Flame Bait" against other consoles?

If this keeps happening you may want to consider getting an uninteruptible power supply (UPS). You may be having power line surges or brown outs that are damaging your system. Our house is about 52 years old and my computers used to always freeze and hang until I got a UPS.
Kojima rocks @ Jan 21st 2007 10:19AM
"I got my 360 working "
Let us all pray for your 360..
"and i have a lot of Games..."
"You are one year behind Me"
Exactly..do a couple of things - 1. check out the games you have, and the lineup for PS3 as on xmas 2007. You may see the light. 2. The XBOX (and 360) - dead in four years. Check out the games on PS2 4-7 years after launch - GoW, FF12, Okami, GoW3.
So you have Gears and..umm..R6 (Coming to PS3), Oblivion (ditto), GRAW (GRAW 2 on PS3)..and a few GTA clones / shooters
"so you have a ps3 with...how many games? Maybe 3"
Just ONE..Resistance...similar to Halo, which, incidentally, is all XBOX fans got for a couple of years.
Tyler @ Jan 21st 2007 2:11PM
@Kike um.. 360 has very little 'exclusives' any more... Hell GoW is going to be on the PC...
But yeah.. my 360 freezes/disk read error many times on Oblivion.. did at least 3 times on GoW too
My first night playing my 360 i got a red ring.. thankfully I fixed it by unhooking and rehooking it back up.
Some of you say that there are no PS3 failures because there's so little of them.. Wouldnt it make sence for these figures to work on percentages? I havnt read any stories on PS3 failures, and over 1 million have been sold in Asia and NA. 1 million is quite a big number, regardless of other console numbers.. We should at least hear SOME stories of PS3 failures by now

Let me give you guys a little lesson on statistics. In the real world, there is something called voluntary bias. What this means is that people that only care about an issue will go on sites like these to report them. Let me explain what I mean. I have a broken Xbox 360 (Not literally, mine works just fine). Probably, one of the first things I would do is go online to research the problem. There I am, on google searching, and accidentally xbox360fanboy.com pops up. I read through the blogs and realize that many of the people have the same problem. So I go to myself, "that is awful and seems like over 33% of people have this problem. MS must suck."
Bottom line, only those with problems will go online to report them. That's why it may seem as if every one is having Xbox 360 failures. (Same goes for the PS3) People who have a system that works just fine won't even bother going on this site to say "Hey I decided to stop by to tell you that I have a perfectly working system". I mean cmon, who does that.
This leads me to believe that you guys are Bsing about all your friends having broken Xboxs. 1. That is Statistically impossible (10 friends with 10 broken xboxs). If it was a truly random sample, that wouldn't of happened. If your telling the truth, then maybe you should call your electric company to find out what could be wrong with your electrical systems (as someone above me said, power surges?) 2. There would of been a recall if over 33% Xboxs failed. Hell if it was 15% there be a recall. Correct it if I'm wrong, but isn't there a regulation law that states the % failure before a recall is required? I sure as heck think that 33% is way over.
phipscube @ Jan 21st 2007 3:28PM
Malik, did you actually read any of those links in Google? None of them mention HARDWARE FAILURE problems. Most of them are talking about issues Sony had BEFORE the machines were launched. (The first in the list from as far back as 2005).
I think before you submit a link like that you should spend 3 seconds longer to check instead of just typing "PS3 Problems" in Google and copy and posting the search result link.
If there were ANY HARDWARE issues with PS3's it would be plastered all over the blogs. As it happens there is ZERO news of it so it must be pretty good out there.
I Remember the launch of Xbox 360 being plagued with hardware faults AFTER launch. Before they even sold 500,000. It almost put me off buying one. Luckily my November 21st 2005 (Manufactured, I got it in Jan 2006) Xbox360 is still running ace. Only glitch i've had is it erroring after the fall update (Many other folks ended up with door stops after that one), but funnily enough a reboot cured it for me so I was lucky.
I agree with Ed in that nervous sense. Whenever I turn on my Xbox360 and especially see the Update prompt I wonder if this will be the day it fails. I'm slightly nervous for a few seconds.
No PS3 owner right now can knock the 360 for games, there are some excellent titles out there, Gears of War being the most amazing game i've seen or played in 2006. But 360 owners shouldn't knock the PS3 either for a lack of games, its not fair either as its only just been released. 360 release games left alot to be desired too. The only game worth bothering with was PGR3 (And the only one I bought for 3 months).
Both Systems are fantastic. The one system I am a little underwhelmed with (Dare I say) is the Wii. I've played it a few times now at friends houses and found it fun for about an hour then that was it, bored or annoyed with the lack of precision and limited screen sensing area. Zelda for me is played better on the GC. Maybe I just prefer the traditional pad.
If Sony repackaged the PS2 with a new controller and called it the PS3 people would puke with anger. Wii would have made me feel like that had I bought one. I can see it gathering Dust on many a gamers shelf and only coming out for parties. For party gaming I much prefer Singstar, Buzz, Eyetoy and Dancing Stage ta very much.

TO BE HONEST XBOX 360 IS DOING ITS THING, BUT!!! IF POPULAR EXCLUSIVE GAMES ON THE 360 LIKE GEARS OF WAR AND OTHER TITLES, WERE MADE OVER ON THE PS3. WITH TIME, DEDICATION AND THE SKILLS OF THE GAME DEVELOPERS BEING PUSHED TO THEIR LIMITS BY THE PS3. THOSE GAMES WOULD BE BETTER IN EVERY WAY. I am not a picky gamer at all, and so far I have found every game on the PS3 to be fun, madden was still fun, even though EA chopped the crap out of it for the PS3, I dunno why they changed the buttons around, and I have yet to understand why you can't create your own team on the PS3 version but oh well, still fun.
I am really interested in the "calling all cars" cartoonish game that is coming out. looks fun to play.
