It's been rumored, but now it's officially here! The amazing, changing PS3 shows no signs of slowing as Sony has unleashed yet another force-fed update for the PS3. The new 1.5 firmare does add some functionality that PS3 fanboys might actually care about. Here's the official list direct from Sony.
- Users
- You can now select an image to use as the User Icon from [Photo].
- Settings
- [Key Tone] has been added as an option under [Sound Settings].
- [Delete Backup]has been added as an option under [System Settings] > [Backup Utility].
- WEP 128, WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA-PSK (AES) have been added as security methods that can be used with [AOSS™] under [Automatic].
- Friends
- The method for saving your password/automatic login under PLAYSTATION®Network has been changed. There are now two separate options.
- Other
- You can now enter text in Korean using the on-screen keyboard.
While you'll see those who complain that the PS3 is succumbing to a "just patch it" mentality, I applaud Sony for aggresively improving the PS3 and adding interesting new features. Who hasn't been waiting for that Korean keyboard functionality?
The upgrade is available now.

Is this the patch that makes the console good?
DLB10000 @ Jan 25th 2007 8:41PM
I'm already getting tired of waiting for them to fix something worth while. Now I agree that firmware updates and patching is they way to go! But, get crackin on the real issues already...playin music while doing things w/the PS3, letting a download finish while playing a game, your own playlist in games...Those are the updates that need to happen yesterday.

It also seems my sixaxis controller works better too lol more responsive in movements in spin control on Tiger Woods PGA tour and on games like madden and resistance

The PS Store also runs a lot quicker. Not sure about the downloads themselves though.
MiKE (slurrey) @ Jan 25th 2007 10:37PM
The update fixed the jaggies in PS2 games (whoohoo!), but 2D PS1 games still look glitchy... argh.

I'm korean, and the new function really makes me happy
j @ Jan 25th 2007 10:59PM
To multitask on the PS3, all you do is tap the PS button. It only works on simple things like listening to music, and watch a slide show or browse the internet, but it's a start.

final fantasy X and XII look alot better now

I'm not sure if it's new or not, but you can zoom in on the browser by holding square and pressing R2(+) or L2(-).
Also, it's been said, but you can browse and play music by pressing the PS button while you browse and playing some music, or vice versa, and then pressing the ps button again.
El Payo @ Jan 26th 2007 1:33AM
SOCOM 3 character models still are jaggy for me.
DLB10000 @ Jan 25th 2007 11:46PM

did this update corrupt anybody else's ps2 saves? now when I check my save data it tells me no data found, though it says 0000/7998 available. I only lost 6 hrs of ff xii but it's still a pain.

All My PS2 Saves are Fine.
PS2 games look great now. Woo Hoo.
Also as a Note if you have Blazing Angels this Fixes the Issue where you would have to uncheck 1080 p & i as available resolutions in order to get Co-Pilot Voices.
My Next WishList Item is being able to Wallpaper the Background like I can on my PSP.
Also support for BlueTooth Keyboard Mouse Combos would be Sweet too.

hey it says you can use your pics for avatars but how???
j @ Jan 28th 2007 4:44PM
the pics for an avatar thing is only for your PS3 username, not your PSN username. To change your system username just hit triangle over your little icon at the left of the menu. I was surprised by the fact that it supports PNG transparency.
