Firmware 3.10 now available on Network Update [Update 1]
First Korea ... now the world! Firmware 3.10 is now available for PSP owners that can access a wi-fi point and hit "Network Update" on their systems. As previously mentioned, the update includes the following enhancements:- Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
- Support for the MPEG-4 AVC format has been added under [Location Free Player]
- [Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as a feature under [Sound Settings] in [Settings].
It should be noted that this upgrade will render homebrew useless on your system, and may prevent you from downgrading indefinitely. While we fully support Sony's endeavors on the system, we want you to make an educated choice before deciding to upgrade or not. Of course, this upgrade is but a taste of things to come: Sony will most likely include an even more robust feature set in the next major upgrade.
For those of you unable to access Network Update, feel free to download the upgrade from us. Connect your PSP via USB and save in PSP/GAME/UPDATE.
[Update 1: News from QJ suggests that people with custom firmware should not upgrade, as your systems may become bricked.]

Sorry, not good enough Sony. All I want is full resolution video. I'm going with homebrew.
spir00 @ Jan 30th 2007 8:30AM
I'll wait up to 3 more days for the next robust update then.

I can't help but feel this was rushed out to patch the new cracks that everyone is so excited about. With the PS3 and PSP, it almost feels like Sony is like a nerdy little kid, keeping their best cards in reserve to really surprise people... except that here, MS and Nintendo already have such a massive lead, Sony is more like a creepy middle aged man who is proud of himself for being a level-60 WoW player: only he knows, and nobody cares when he tell them.

Why cant the Sony devs come up with some cool stuff to put in their updates? Pspfanboy and IGN already came out with a list of features they'd like to see on the official firmware. But is Sony listening? Noooooooo....
Rajat Jain @ Jan 30th 2007 9:29AM
come on sony give us some cool features like the open edition firmwares by dark_alex ! hell no to upgrade from 3.03 OE-C !
Bored @ Jan 30th 2007 9:47AM
Andrew, you forgot to mention the new web browser Memory Economy option in the features list. Also, some people say that the visual player has new color options. (I don't know for sure, since I'm a 3.03OE user. :D).
Bored @ Jan 30th 2007 9:48AM
Oh, you did include it. Sorry about that annoying bit :(
Andrew Yoon @ Jan 30th 2007 1:40PM
To Bored: The visual player does NOT feature any new upgrades.
El Payo @ Jan 30th 2007 2:24PM
The Location Free Player codec update only works if you have one of the newer Location Free Base Stations.
brgers @ Jan 30th 2007 2:32PM

So what exactly is a DYNAMIC NORMALIZER?
Wolf @ Jan 30th 2007 5:44PM
Sorry Sony, but until I am allowed to watch videos on Youtube through the internet on PSP, I'm not upgrading.
Kevin @ Jan 30th 2007 6:34PM
wat does the dynamic NORMALIZER do?? i tried to find out but i dont get it???
Andrew Yoon @ Jan 30th 2007 7:13PM
Dynamic normalization means the volume of each song won't vary too much. So, if you have one really loud MP3 and one really soft one, they'll play at about the same volume. It's pretty handy to not have to hassle with the volume controls too often.

What is needed is an auto resume in the music playback area. After watching a video or playing a game, then going back to music, it starts the music from the beginning again. Quite annoying :( Especially for audio books.
stylemo @ Jan 30th 2007 10:00PM
Why would I upgrade to 3.10 when I have 3.03 OE-C? Homebrew is good because hackers out there are finding ways to maximize the PSPs funcionality. Let's take for example the Infrared, SONY hasn't able to do anything about it but someone out there has been able to make the PSP into a universal remote control. When SONY comes out with a firmware that has a lot of cool features, like turning the PSP into a phone or making use of its IR then I'll pretty sure I will upgrade it. And I also hope in the future that the PSP will support .avi video files and other formats. But still, every software has a bug and sooner or later, dark Alex will find a hole in 3.10.

"15. What is needed is an auto resume in the music playback area. After watching a video or playing a game, then going back to music, it starts the music from the beginning again. Quite annoying :( Especially for audio books."
Phil, it should be resuming where you left off. That's the normal function of the PSP: you can listen to a song, stop it halfway & go to the XMB, mess about with watching videos, looking at pictures, or internet browser, close that, and when you hover on the music icon of the XMB, press HOME and it will continue the song where you paused it.
BlasphemyHatt @ Jan 31st 2007 11:49AM
Sony sould just hire Dark Alex
txa1265 @ Jan 31st 2007 1:48PM
Interesting update ... 3.10 may brick custom firmware ... how long has that been something suspected ...
Here is the controversial question of the day - I just noticed on VGCharts that Killzone Liberation sold a whopping 45000 copies ... I wonder what the impact is of 'homebrew' on that?
HomebrewBound10 @ Jan 31st 2007 7:38PM
I think that it would be really cool if sony made a program like windows vista (not just a portal the acctual program) and mabey a 3.03 downgrader i know it wont happen tho...

TO Bored and Andrew (post 6 & 8)... I did upgrade to 3.10 and indeed noticed a change in the MP3 visualizers. Although there are o changes in the options, I do notice that 3 of them slowly shift colors slightly over the extend of a minute. Also the green 'waterflow' visualization seems to be changed a little. The pattern changes slightly over an extended time and also the colors shift from a green background to an almost black background. After a while it all goes back to the original way it started. It's a very small change to the look, but honestly i enjoy it a lot. Makes it look a little more interesting to see for a longer period.
I like the new memory option in the webbrowser too, works like a charm for sites that use lots of rich graphics and are normalwise too heavy to load without getting the 'not enough memory' error.
I don't know if it's just me or the music that i got on my PSP, but the new normalizer didn't seem to have much effect at all. I wasn't able to tell a difference in volume between the on and off setting. Even for songs or movies that had slightly lower sound levels.
HomebrewBound10 @ Feb 1st 2007 6:24PM
It would be cool if Sony included a downgrader...it will NEVER appen i know but i wish...
