RUMOR: Killzone 2 demo to Face/Off against Halo 3 beta?

The answer? According to Luke Smith, Sony will respond to the beta even before it's released -- the Game Developer's Conference. Phil Harrison is one of the keynotes (all the keynoters are actually very important... I mean, Miyamoto? Awesome.) and what better way to rise up to the Bungie challenge than announce a playable Killzone 2 demo? The game's rumored to be very far along in development, so why not? But please, don't call it a Halo-killer. That term is really annoying. But if this speculation turns out to be true, Killzone 2 will inevitably have that phrase tacked onto it.

Well it wont have that phrase is the demo turns out to be a lump of coal.
However if the demo does have graphics as good as the demo then i shall be getting a PS3 price drop or no price drop and even if the gameplay sucks, i'll still have the graphics.
Dolla Dolla @ Feb 7th 2007 10:50AM
Spoken like a true Graphics whore. If you want the graphics so bad and don't care about gameplay, download the trailer and imagine you're playing it. Now you have a spare 600 bucks.

I agree. Not only is "Halo Killer" an annoying term, to people like me, it's meaningless. I borrowed a friend's X-box years ago because I was so desperate to play the Halo games after all the hype they had generated. In the end, I found the games completely disappointing. There is NOTHING special about either of those games, and I can think of dozens shooters that I'd rather play instead. Am I the only one who really doesn't like Halo?

@ Stef,
"Am I the only one who really doesn't like Halo?"
No, but you're likely in the minority.

I just hope that the Demo comes out in 07. But the game must come out in 08. That way KZ will not be put up against Halo. A lot of people dod not know KZ was a great game. The look of it really was great but game play sucked. So if this version can have both then this one should be nice.
AG @ Feb 7th 2007 1:01PM
I agree, Halo is nothing special at all IMO. Just way to much hype and marketing behind it.
I heard that Capcom spent around 40 million? to market Lost Planet?
If that is the case, I wonder how much MS spent on marketing Halo? Anybody know?
Tyler @ Feb 7th 2007 1:45PM
half-life > halo
shase @ Feb 7th 2007 2:11PM
Halo never got into me. I played 1, 2 i did coop and 3 so far looks like 2 with better graphics. Sure that can be said for every sequel but killzone ps3's trailer looked more exiting. granted its fake but i think i will give Phil Harrison's promise a try- he is probably one of the best reps out of the 3 consoles- he is realistic,he answers most of the questions truthfully, knows what his talking about and doesnt make huge promises like some others. With that said, if Killzone ps3 lives up to the trailer, has more than 10hours of gameplay and decent multi i am sold. I dont want to waste 60$ on a great looking game with 5 hours of gameplay and have to "make my money's worth" to play online.
j @ Feb 7th 2007 4:58PM
Awesome. So Sony is going to bring a knife to a gun fight. And anyone still wondering about the graphics, remember the PS3 couldn't handle Gears of War because lack of RAM and inferior GPU. Don't think that KZ will look close to that trailer. If anything, it might look slightly better than Resistance.
shase @ Feb 7th 2007 5:10PM
@j
Yeah who said so? Is it one of MS's lapdogs? Is it someone who developed GOW? Sure if that person cant do it blame it on the system!
ozymandias @ Feb 7th 2007 6:07PM
AG:
$0.00, Halo wasnt hyped at all. It sold due to a combination of good reviews and word of mouth. Halo2 was over hyped, but it was the fans of the first game, and that awesome e3 trailer, that created the gigantic amount of hype around the game. As for Halo 3, microsoft is pimping the f*** out of that game in the hopes of it being a system seller.
@shase
We can see that j is a fanboy, but in the years to come, ram is going to be a problem for both the 360 and the ps3. Even now, Bethesda decided to not make some of the 360s downloadable content available to the ps3 due to memory constraints and performance issues. The game just didnt run properly with the added content trying to load. So that part of j's post has validity. However, the "inferior GPU" comment was likely pulled from the depths of his ass.
Naaiif @ Feb 7th 2007 7:31PM
Well considering UT3 is progressing smoothly and can run fine on ps3 (it uses the same engine as GoW - The Unreal 3 Engine) plus it seems to be better graphically i see no reason why GoW couldn't be done on ps3. That's just the devs speaking, it works both ways aswell, just so you dont think im totally biased:
One of the devs said DMC4 couldn't be done on the 360 and could only be done on the ps3. If you've seen DMC4 gameplay you know they're talking total shite because that game could run easy on 360. Devs from any company will say whatever it takes to sell their product. Even if it means lying.
Trevor @ Feb 7th 2007 9:10PM
actually shase it was mark rein (sp?) president of epic games.
jeff @ Feb 7th 2007 9:59PM
your right, halo was just another shooting game. there was a good story though, and some shiny simple effects. the game was still very fun. the part that got us into it though, was the multiplayer. we'd have halo parties a few times a month, and it was a blast.
i find that title of halo killer annoying because you are comparing 2 different games. its all personal preference. its almost as bad as people comparing gears of war to resistance.
Ritchie Nolasco @ Feb 7th 2007 10:13PM
Killzone is pathetic. With so much hype and Sony's authorizing OPM to use the term "Halo-Killer" on the cover of its mag, the game really sucked from start to finish.
1. Poor story
2. Controls lacking precision
3. Stupid artificial intelligence
4. Sluggish pacing
Killzone is proof that Guerilla Games is not a true quality game developer yet in the end Sony bought them out.
Halo is not perfect but it sure made the FPS genre popular on console gaming as it sold massively. Since that time, more FPS titles graced the consoles more so than that of the PlayStation/Saturn/N64 era.
For the future, I think the PS3 Killzone will end up as nothing more than just over-hyped trash. Because anticipation is very high for Halo 3, Sony is desperate to ride the hype and milk as much money as they could.
alienclay @ Feb 7th 2007 10:41PM
yes, i think both these games are overhyped. i'm more interested in KZ in the hopes that cpu controlled units will aproximate the AI put forth in the e3 05 trailer. i'm also a little pleased that the kz demo is before the H3 beta, to help give it a chance to be seen on its own than people trying to draw paralells off the bat.
but more so than that, i'll be happy when we see both games playable by the public, so the games can speak for themselves.
Jason @ Feb 7th 2007 11:45PM
Umm, #17 there was a game called Golden Eye for the N64. You may of heard of it if you are over the age of 20 and have movable thumbs. Halo was NOT the first killer in the FPS world on a console. As much as people are entitled to their opinions, the system link on Halo 1 was revolutionary for a console. The controller is great for FPS whether you like them or not, reluctantly I dare to say that in this capacity it outshines the SIXAXIS, but the buck stops there (after the vibrating tools start rolling out so to speak). Halo 2 is pretty sick as well multi-player wise. Keep in mind I have no experience with the Half-Life multiplayer, but the weapons, vehicles, and most importantly the CONTROLLER make Halo 2 tough to beat. I like the grenade physics a bit better than resistance, and I don't really appreciate the set up of the ranked games on the Resistance Team Deathmatch. I mean if you split, then what? Don't get me wrong, Live Halo 2 is full of cheaters (bridgers, standbyers), but its probably the best FPS out there, nowhere NEAR being unimpressive. If you like the genre, lets be realistic here, no WAY can you not at LEAST appreciate Halo from a distance, even if you suck at it...not to mention that more copies of Halo 2 were sold on the release date than any movie, system, game, cell phone, etc. that I can think of. Like it or not, there are STILL people waiting for Halo 3 to drop before they buy a 360 (myself included) because no other game on the 360 even to date gets more stick time than Halo 2 as is. You should at least have one 360 title thats worth more caluses and man hours than Halo 2. Its a shame that the 360 has been out for so long, and doesn't have a title that fits this description yet. The new Capcom game looks cool, Gears is worth about 4.5 hrs...well at least it plays HD DVDs...and Live is great when the update doesn't kill your system...or people don't cheat on Halo 2...
Jason @ Feb 8th 2007 12:16AM
...and as far as sucking storylines go, the best thing about the "end" of Halo 2 is you knew (or at least hoped like a SOB) that there would be a Halo 3. The Gears story DOES keep you into the game, but the "end" of that one is the same way. It seems like games never end anymore (GRAW, SC:DA, Halo 2, Gears...I haven't ended Resistance yet).
And I may have mispoke earlier, Halo 2 may have the best MULTIPLAYER out there, but the levels DO get boring, even on legendary. Thank goodness for dumb shit like finding skulls and the scarab gun to keep you interested in the single player...still funny how everyone has been so threatened by the KZ video in general. Halo fans remember the trailer for Halo 2 when the Master Cheif ends up standing in front of endless Covenant assholes and charges up the grenade? Where the uck was THAT in Halo 2. As far as the "Halo killer" or the "name-it killer" concept, its all hype, but people LOVe controversies like that. They seldom achieve actual status, but what people LOVE is to see them fail. For instance, I own a MS Zune because I hate I-tunes. Its good at what I bought it to do, and I'm satisfied, but it certainly isn't an Ipod killer. Ipod fan boys will tell you how much it sux, but if I already hate fucking Ipods, then for me I didn't need anything to "kill" the Ipod, for it was already dead to me. I just needed a decent fucking MP3 player. At the end of the day I hope Halo 3 kicks ass and KZ is just as good (if not better). Healthy competition always favors the consumer; it only means that ALL developers will have to put out kickass apps to compete...
StevenVeneralle @ Feb 8th 2007 1:46PM
I agree with the guy who asked if he was the only one who thinks Halo is ehh. Halo to me was NOT impressive. People were going OMFG Duel Wield!. I'm thinking um hello Unreal 1 had Duel Wielding and it came out way before you. Yea so what you could drive these wierdo vechicles but really not that impressive.
Thomas @ Feb 8th 2007 7:28PM
Killzone 2 needs to be a Killzone killer, and not a Halo 3 killer. But I think that if PS3 is going to outsale the xbox and FURTHER prove that it deserve the top spot.. then it's games are going to have to rival Halo, and all other xbox games. Halo is going to move systems... but what a good deed Killzone 2 could do for the PS3 if it's up to par with what Sony has been promising, and what we all have been expecting.
