Let's crunch Japan's hardware sales numbers: 1/29 - 2/4
At long last! The PlayStation 3 is selling better than the PlayStation 2! At least, for the week of 1/29 - 2/4. Still far behind the Wii and DS, even the PSP, the PlayStation 3 is at least moving. The official numbers are below.- DS-Lite: 146,073
- Wii: 65,740
- PSP: 31,216
- PS3: 18,727
- PS2: 17,540
- XBox360: 6,130
- Game Boy Micro: 1,050
- Game Boy Advance SP: 724
- GameCube: 306
- DS: 119
- Game Boy Advance: 28
Well, if Nintendo knows how to do anything, they definitely know how to phase out prior incarnations of their handhelds pretty fast. It's one of those cases where cannibalization of your own products is necessary and even desired. Heck, if Sony cannibalized all those PS2 sales into PS3 sales, that would be fantastic. Maybe someday, Sony, maybe someday.

I'd rather they buy the ps2 than the other system, or nothing at all... at leat when the time comes they may be more tempted to buy a ps3. I think that's how Sony is positioning the two systems right now. Instead of having a cheap ps3, you have a cheap ps2. For those who aren't ready to move into the next gen systems or are a more casual gamer, it's the best choice.
I wonder how many more wii's would be sold if there was no ps2? In some ways those two are in competition for some of the same market. I know a couple people I work with who were looking for Wii's have instead purchased ps2 systems. No wii + impressive game library in place already = more ps2 sales.

The PS3 has been outselling the PS2 ever since it launched in Japan, except for the previous week.

PS3/PS2 combo is doing quite well... now if Sony can transition folks who are willing to buy a ps2, and get them to buy ps3 instead...

People buy a lot of things more expensive than a PS3. Can't they see value in it?

Taking over 2 years to phase out the older systems after the launch of the DS and is still not complete is fast? And still selling PS2s even though the PS3 has been out 3 months is slow?
