Downloadable quests hit Monster Hunter 2 in Japan

Yesterday in Japan, Monster Hunter fans were able to go to their local game stores and download new quests from the demo kiosk's "PlayStation Spot". In addition to quests and more, PSP owners who don't own Monster Hunter Portable 2nd can download a demo of the game.

With reports of Monster Hunter 2 coming outside of Japan, let's hope this additional content is either included in the version we get, or that we can similarly download the content. I personally dig the idea of downloadable content on the PSP and I hope more games start to feature it. Does downloadable content appeal to you as well?

Isn't it fricking obvious that downloadable content is a strong selling point for games? There is absolutely no reason that downloadable content would have a negative effect, so why can't Sony create a policy similar to what Microsof has done where developers must include some sort of downloadable content or internet connectivity in their games?

whats retarded is they still wont release the european stuff for wipeout to u.s owners and keep it seperate meaning users from different regions cant download another regions content. Also, why dont they patch some games up like prince of persia which is said to ebr eally buggy.

I believe my EB Games has the PSP Spot, I've seen little floor mats saying its here, but how do I connect to it? Do I just search for networks or do I use the game sharing?

I think DLC is awesome and really can extend the game's longevity (i.e. Wipeout Pure) but I understand that it could end up being costly and if developers aren't too sure how the game will sell, they usually decide not to include the really cool feature. Then again, Exit was a very overlooked puzzle game with MANY downloadable levels. So it really depends on the developer.

Also, Capcom already knows just how popular Monster Hunter is in Japan and it is rather obvious that they would include DLC in Japan through the PS Spots. For the US, though, it would be a bit tougher to pull off unless they embedded a website into the game (i.e. Killzone: Liberation) to allow downloads anywhere as long as you have a wifi connection. More logical for the mainstream PSP user would be website downloads off a PC/Mac and then putting it in the PSP.

Basically, if the game does hit the US, you can expect Capcom to include the DLC somehow.

I see this as a mixed blessing. I agree, downloadable content would be completely awesome, and while No. 1 has a great idea, it implies that the PLAYSTATION NETWORK is robust enough to handle that, and is available for easy access on the PSP. Sure, a firmware update could help with that, but so far, Sony doesn't seem to care.

This could really suck, though, if Sony restricts this to PSP Spot download locations only. I've been to about four different PSP Spot locations, and none of them were active or could be found by my PSP. PSP Spot is pretty much dead here.

You know, I just realized that the Dreamcast promoted downloadable content more than Sony. Phantasy Star Online had a decent selection of downloadable quests, and Skies of Arcadia had quests and weapons. Soul Calibur had a VMU game, as did a few other games. And the Dreamcast only had a 56k dial-up with no really established gaming network. Ahh, Dreamcast, how much I love thee.
