Metareview + Our take: Virtua Fighter 5

IGN: 8.8
Gamespot: 8.1
1UP: 9.5
EGM: 9.5, 10, 9.5
Before we go on, the rest of this review is a bit lengthy. So we're going to separate it into the "continued" portion. Go ahead and click through!
Let's talk about the highlights, then we'll talk about the low...lights. First off, common to all reviews is the mention of how smooth and precise the timing needs to be for the fighting engine. The engine is, without a doubt, the most complex and most rewarding fighting engine to attempt realistic fighting styles, cramming in so many moves for each character that mastering just one is really your only option.
Another highlight given the nod by most reviews are the graphics -- the characters look absolutely stunning in 1080i (yeah, it says 720p, but there's a noticeable difference between the two... I can't get 1080p so I can't say anything for that). There's something nice about seeing the stitching in people's clothing, the veins in their incredibly toned muscles, and the wrinkles on their knuckles. There's a reason there are less than 20 characters: each of these were meticulously designed to look very kick ass.
Thirdly, a nod goes to the customization options allowed through the "Quest Mode", introduced back in VF4: Evolution if memory serves. Each character has four distinct outfits with more than enough crap to buy for said costumes to keep you playing for days on end, just to achieve that customized character you really wanted. Personally, I only play this mode because, to me, I consider it a "faux-online" mode of play: you fight against randomly customized opponents of varying skill, with unique ring names, tag lines, and win/loss ratios. It's a lot of fun.
Okay. Enough of the good, what's wrong with the game? Every review preaches the same: no online play. Yeah, while online play would be a nice addition to any fighter, you've got to recognize that the timing for this fighting system is really precise. Meaning, any amount of lag would spell doom for your match. The way the game is set up, though, really indicates that online will be added later on (if that's possible... it should be). The 360 version is supposed to have online play, right? Well, expect an update before then for the PS3 version, or at least upon the 360 version's release. If the online mode is installed directly onto the hard drive, wouldn't it technically have a faster connection? Give it time. Online will come.
Another gripe found in a few of the reviews are the limited backdrops. There are only a little over a dozen areas to visit and while some are really nice, others are kind of "meh". The lack of destructible environments (although damaging the edge of the ring is hella fun) is also noted.
AI is cited as being lacking by some reviewers. Obviously, they've played a lot of fighting games. I'm not very good at these types of games and the Quest Mode gives you the heads up on how skilled your enemy will be. They certainly range from "let me stand here and get pummeled" to "let you stand there and get pummeled" in my honest opinion. It's sort of a gateway into learning the character's moves. I think it was IGN who said something along the lines of "you can back up, run in and do a quick throw move over and over again until you win". Sure, you could do that, but you'll look like a tool who doesn't want to actually learn how to play the game. Button-mashing, also, does not get you very far. Take what you will from this.
I've got a personal agenda with one thing in this game. Now, I know it's a staple of the series, but... Ring Outs? If I want to toss someone over that golden railing and pummel them against a golden buddha statue, I should be able to now. It's just a personal thing -- it neither gives nor takes away from the game since it was a function in all of the VF titles.
Overall, this is an incredibly fantastic, deep, and addicting game that deserves your love. With beautiful graphics, nice scenery (albeit limited selection), amazing battle engine, a plethora of unlockables and whatever else... this game should be in your PS3 right now. If it isn't, because you want online play or would prefer the button mashing goodness of other titles, that's okay. Know that we firmly believe that online play is going to be added on. Those who have the title can attest: it's definitely set up in such a way that it's planned. So, our score:
PS3Fanboy: 9 out of 10 fists to the face
Who do you play as? I've really grown attached to Eileen. She's a force to be reckoned with... plus, she's the only girl in the game who isn't really, really tall.

Eileen is awesome. I especially like her design.
kinq @ Feb 24th 2007 2:32PM
The biggest setback about the game is simply that there is no online play. This game might be fun if you live with many people at your house to brawl but if you don't, fighting games get very dull. I'll just wait for the game to possibly get online play like you say.

Shun Di on VF 5 is the most rewarding fighter I've ever used, and when you figure out what you are doing, he's unstoppable. Half of his move can be used as fake-outs, his stance and variety of strikes doesn't clue your opponent in to your strikes, and you can pair together if a hard combo with two throws into one move if you have the timing.
Plus, he's a drunk, and what is not to love about that?
Jay @ Feb 24th 2007 3:24PM
lei fei is by far the best character on here
Weymaster @ Feb 24th 2007 3:58PM
I got the game and I like it, although I've never been a fan of the series. The fact that is one of the very few decent games available for the PS3 made me get it and put an effort in liking it.
It is really not clear to me what are the resolutions supported. My TV supports both (720P and 1080i) but it doesn't have an option to tell me what is the current resolution. It does look very good.
If they add online play I'll be a happy camper but it is not really a must (in my opinion).
I just wanted to make a note about your comment that the Online mode installed on the HDD would eliminate lag. That is not true. The only thing that would change is the loading speed, not the amount of lag.
He dicho.
Strike Man @ Feb 24th 2007 4:31PM
"It is really not clear to me what are the resolutions supported."
It supports 480i/p and 720p...
..which also means that those in my camp (CRT HDTVs and such) will only get to enjoy this game at 480p on our HDTVs.
Le *sigh*
BigDog @ Feb 24th 2007 4:37PM
I tried it at my friends and I didn't really care much for VF5. I don't know but I think by now these console systems should be able to have real life physics in them and better "Movement" quality, there movements are to computerish still. I mean yea, the graphics are really nice but the character movements don't match that of the graphics, so to me this game I would have to rate it a 5.5/10, It's nothing new it has been done in the past, by now they should have made these fighting game's a hell of a lot better.
bootsielon @ Feb 24th 2007 4:38PM
Jacky, Akira and Leon are my favorite characters in the Virtua Fighter universe.
ndoerr @ Feb 24th 2007 4:47PM
@ BigDog -- I hear what you're saying about the physics, characters floating after getting hit and whatnot. You've got to understand though, this game is huge in Japan and fans actually -=requested=- those physics remain. Don't look at me, I'm all about getting as real as it can get, but the arcade-going "hardcore fighting enthusiasts" wanted floaty physics. *shrug*
Raycer @ Feb 24th 2007 4:59PM

I have a CRT TV that says it will upvert 720p to its native 1080i
iSaGaNi @ Feb 24th 2007 7:17PM
the game can be played in native 1080i from the PS3 - thing is you have 720p not selected in the display settings. Online would have been the cherry on this sunday, but hopefully they release some downloadable content for leader boards, replay viewing, or something....
Jay @ Feb 24th 2007 7:34PM
how can you not like the physics in this game? aside from getting hit while u are falling down and etc. the physics and animation in this are amazing.
things like the floating after getting hit are left in the game because of the fun factor. there has to be a thin line between a game and reality when you make things too realistic you get rid of the fun factor.
im personally not a fan of fighting games but i have been hooked to this one just like i was hooked to the first one on the sega saturn. this is a great game definitly worthy of a 8.5 out of 10 orr higher
sean @ Feb 24th 2007 7:45PM
i dont like this game. i dont feel like puttin all the time in it to learn a character. ill just buy tekken 5 DR when it comes out soon. becuase i already know the buttons in that game.
ndoerr @ Feb 24th 2007 8:16PM
Update:
=D
I can't wait to take this online someday and fight you guys. The computer can't keep up anymore. The reward for training with a character is so high. Especially dressing them up all pretty-like.
hern @ Feb 24th 2007 10:12PM
Huge Tekken fan, but after sometime with this game I can't put it down. I'm big on using Goh.
As far as those comlaining about realism, why? Too real and it will turn into a UFC game from way back when. Pulling off certain combos would disappear too; people just don't bounce like that in real life, no matter how hard you hit them. You put that realism in and you sacrifice some serious gameplay features and mechanics that make it fun in the first place. Also, fighters in a ring don't exactly have great "movement" majority of the time their movements are pretty stiff and jerky, save for maybe genki sudo.
If you don't like the game don't play it, no sense leaving a negative comment when you don't have to, unless of course you enjoy having people listen to you whine.
Greg the Paladin @ Feb 25th 2007 1:28AM
Used to play as Wolf back on the Sega Saturn, then went to Lei Fei when he came around, and now i'm really eager to try out El Blaze.
Virtua Fanboy @ Feb 25th 2007 3:00AM
Akira all the way!!! Oh ya, give it up people neither PS3 or 360 is gonna be online. 360 will have leaderboards and stuff. So start worrying and get the cryin over w/people online isn't coming.
Brandon Johnson @ Feb 25th 2007 3:23AM
I believe that Sega has denied online play on both versions. The only online the 360 will probably be leaderboards.
Naaiif @ Feb 25th 2007 10:12AM
I hope whatever stuff the 360 gets ps3 will get as well in an update, sort of like what happened with Oblivion but the other way round.
elvisizer @ Feb 25th 2007 2:10PM
yeah, nick, you are wrong. Game Informer has nothing to do with 1up. 1up is done by the ziff davis gamegroup. Same company that brings you Games For Windows and EGM mags, but slightly different groups of people. I have no idea who does Game Informer, but it ain't ziff.
Jonathan @ Feb 26th 2007 12:48AM
Bigdog, you are crazy to complain about this physics. This game is perhaps the most perfect and well rounded fighting game ever made, and this coming from a tekken fanboy, this game is nuts. lei fei is of course the best, fools. And if you think the comp aint hard enough, go to the advanced arena and fight some guys whos dan 9, playing wolf, it is damn near impossible, this game cannot be won with cheap combos and repeated moves, it works for awhile, but eventually if you aint got skills, you aint gonna keep winning.
Delive @ Feb 26th 2007 6:09PM
With the resolution saying 720p, but able to do 1080p, could this be a result of the PS3 firmware upgrade?
