PlayStation Home confirmed by New York Times!
It's not exactly a 100% super-truth confirmation, but the New York Times have released a story stating that Sony "plans to announce new online capabilities for [the PS3], meant to draw gamers into Sony's cyberspace community and allow them to share entertainment content they have created, à la YouTube." Sounds like... yeah, it is! PlayStation Home! The online world that allows you to create a persistant identity that records your achievements in multiple games -- decorating a "room" with said achievements. Hopefully it's in 3D.The article goes on to talk about GDC and how it's Sony's time to show off the PS3 and create the buzz that was more or less absent for the console's launch. It's all a bunch of stuff we've heard before, in truth. That doesn't mean it isn't important, but the subject here is that the New York Times has announced the PlayStation Home is coming in the Fall -- if it doesn't, that spells big trouble for Sony. Everyone's expecting it now, so if it weren't true, it had better become true. What do you guys think? Will GDC give Sony some positive press at last?

Today is big day for Sony all around.. got some new releases in addition to GDC.
I definitely think that some folks are going to jump on to that ps3 bandwagon... People who own ps3, (like me) are definitely looking forward to any and all new features that will continue to justify the purchase... and new comers to the ps3 are also looking for any reason to justify the purchase of the ps3...but before that can happen.. Sony has to show us the goods... and hopefully this GDC conference will provide some good news... cause Sony really hasn't had any since E3.

As one of the people who has held off on making the purchase...I think today is the beginning of Sony turning the corner. I think it goes without saying that the PS3 is a technically superior system....but that means nothing if the overall gaming experience isn't superior. It seems to me that Sony is putting the rubber to the road to ensure that devs use the full power of the system to bring such games to market. If Xbox 360 and PS3 were stocks...I'd buy the PS3....looks like it's already at the bottom with much greater upside...I won't attempt to predict who will win the console war in terms of sheer numbers but I think we will all be wow'd by what will be coming to the PS3.

They're gonna rip off achievements. Good one, Sony.

One... if you've held off buying a ps3, hopefully you won't get an emotionless one (i've been waiting since they announced removal of the emotion chips from the 3 to use that joke).
Problem is, if this is an accurate reporting of the story, they apparently haven't promised anything of the sort. Just access to an online community. If the article said more, then tell us more, K? I'm already a member of the sony "GAP" (aka, useless community) so I already have useless access to media that you all could fine on youtube the next day...
Secondly, this pshome, along with the pstube stuff is already old hat. The problem with underground movements (like online video) is that it's only good in it's infancy. People don't jump on an already popular bandwagon, they want the hip, underground stuff...
Sorry Sony, I'm predicting you get the 'also ran' votes on this one... unless you can come up with something truely inovative, just mixing things that the general public are all 'meh' about won't make all that much of a difference..
But those are just my two quid.

P.s. They aren't going to rip anyone off for anything... achivements have come way before Microsoft in gaming, xbl just made it a way to show how large your man-ness is to other guys... ya know, it's your online ferarri. they just are doing what every 12 year old with a wallet asked for. What they are forgetting is that their little toy is more for big kids, and big kids are pretty much in the 'so what' camp on this one...

So Sony sucks for not doing achievements, but as soon as they decide to they are ripping them off? Wow, guess they can never win in the eyes of fanboys. I also suppose WHEN M$ decides to put motion control into the 360 it won't be considered ripping anyone off. Or saying that HDMI or HD disc formats don't matter is perfectly fine, even though they've already added one of those, and will most likely add the other later. Oh, and 1080p doesn't matter either?
M$ does more ripping off than anyone, and that's not just counting their software division. Is it always bad? Not always, but if you're going to bash someone from using an idea alone, regardless of merit, then at least show the same judgment for other companies as well. If it wasn't for the competitive nature of business then we wouldn't have all the awesome stuff we do now.
I think Fall is too late for this feature. It needs to launch Summer at the latest. People have been craving these features for the longest time, and it's starting to sway a lot of nay-sayers into wanting a PS3. Fall and the xmas season is too far off for Sony to wait until they start selling a lot of units. They need to get a head start on the issue, even if a lot of games don't initially release with support for the achievement system.

This is great news! Dont really mind about the fall release seeing how we're getting a ton of good games in between now (Motorstorm today!) and Fall ^^

I like to "show" my achievements with visible items/trophies than just points. No one will give a crap how many points you have (since most challenges are a joke anyway) but if you have a trophy proving an extremely hard time trail or something they will notice it right away.
